Che cosa sono le altcoin? Il panorama oltre Bitcoin

Bitcoin (BTC) può essere la criptovaluta originale, ma non è più l’unica. Non sottovalutare le altcoin, ovvero le criptovalute alternative. Sebbene possano non vantare la stessa longevità e capitalizzazione di mercato, molti dei protocolli e delle applicazioni che emettono questi token stanno guidando l’innovazione che sta aiutando la tecnologia blockchain ad affermarsi come una possibile base per la prossima evoluzione del web. Questo articolo spiega in che modo le altcoin differiscono da BTC e quale ruolo svolgono all’interno di un portafoglio crypto.

Che cos’è esattamente una altcoin?

In termini semplici, si tratta di ogni criptovaluta che non sia BTC. Tuttavia, utilizzare “altcoin” come termine ombrello può essere fuorviante, perché l’universo è vasto. A un estremo troviamo i token nativi emessi da protocolli che forniscono l’infrastruttura per una nuova economia digitale, come Ethereum, Solana e Avalanche, e applicazioni decentralizzate (dApp) che rivoluzionano la finanza tradizionale (TradFi). All’altro estremo troviamo criptovalute con un’utilità minore, come le memecoin, token ispirati ai meme di internet (un cane giapponese di nome Kabosu, nel caso di DOGE).

Dal punto di vista degli investimenti, le altcoin possono aiutare a diversificare il portafoglio grazie alla loro capacità di integrare BTC invece di competere con esso. I progetti più recenti ricordano delle startup perché comportano rischi e ricompense elevati. I fondi vengono raccolti tramite la vendita dei loro token nativi attraverso la versione cripto di una IPO, aprendo questa opportunità anche ai piccoli investitori, a differenza del private equity. I progetti collaudati, come Ethereum, hanno più in comune con le azioni a bassa capitalizzazione, che possono essere volatili ma offrono un notevole potenziale di rialzo.

In che modo le altcoin si differenziano rispetto a BTC?

Trattandosi della criptovaluta originale, BTC è il parametro di riferimento con cui gli investitori analizzano gli altri token, quindi è utile comprenderne le differenze.

Satoshi Nakamoto, pseudonimo del fondatore di Bitcoin, ha progettato BTC come mezzo di scambio, con un’infrastruttura sottostante adeguata. Il sistema è fortemente decentralizzato – migliaia di computer, noti come node, eseguono il software alla base di BTC – e il meccanismo di consenso che permette all’intera rete di essere d’accordo sulla registrazione delle transazioni aumenta la sicurezza rendendo gli attacchi proibitivamente costosi. Tuttavia, con la sua maturazione, BTC si è guadagnato la reputazione di oro digitale a causa della sua offerta limitata (21 milioni di unità, per l’esattezza). Alcune persone ritengono che, vista la sua portabilità, potrebbe fungere da riserva di valore, sebbene il suo prezzo rimanga volatile.

Le altcoin, al contrario, rispondono a una gamma molto più ampia di casi d’uso. Questi sono resi possibili dagli smart contract, accordi che vengono eseguiti in maniera automatica al verificarsi di determinate condizioni, un concetto introdotto da Ethereum nel 2015.

L’opportunità di investire in altcoin

Ora che ne abbiamo compreso l’utilità più ampia, analizziamo alcuni dei progetti che stanno guidando la nuova economia digitale.

Piattaforme di smart contract: sebbene sia stato Ethereum a introdurre gli smart contract, molti altri protocolli lo hanno seguito, tra cui Solana e Avalanche. Oltre ai casi d’uso indicati a seguire, le piattaforme di smart contract forniscono l’infrastruttura per i token non fungibili, e la tokenization degli asset reali.

Stablecoin: le stablecoin sono una delle killer app della tecnologia blockchain, che sfrutta la velocità, le commissioni ridotte e l’inclusività delle criptovalute per rendere più economiche le transazioni internazionali e offrire prodotti di risparmio ai cittadini dei Paesi in via di sviluppo. Le principali monete per capitalizzazione di mercato sono USDT e USDC, garantite da dollari e asset denominati in dollari.

Finanza decentralizzata (DeFi): le applicazioni DeFi stanno rivoluzionando la TradFi abbassando i costi grazie alla possibilità di effettuare transazioni dirette tra le parti e riducendo le barriere ai servizi finanziari. Le piattaforme come Aave e Pendle offrono servizi di prestito, mentre Uniswap è un famoso exchange decentralizzato di criptovalute.

Pagamenti: Litecoin, è stata costruita sull’architettura di Bitcoin con l’obiettivo di risolvere alcune delle limitazioni come mezzo di scambio del suo predecessore, in particolare la scalabilità. Ripple, un altro dei primi progetti cripto, è stato sviluppato per competere con la rete di pagamento globale SWIFT.

Memecoin: Sebbene la loro utilità possa essere discutibile, le memecoin contribuiscono a creare un senso di comunità nell’ecosistema crypto: i detentori di DOGE hanno raccolto fondi per diverse cause, come la costruzione di pozzi d’acqua in Kenya. Inoltre, le memecoin sono riuscite a raggiungere una capitalizzazione di mercato complessiva pari a 37,8 miliardi di dollari (al 31 dicembre 2025).

I rischi di investire in altcoin

Prima di aggiungere altcoin al proprio portafoglio, è ovviamente importante comprenderne i rischi. Sebbene BTC sia considerato volatile, i prezzi delle altcoin tendono a fluttuare maggiormente a causa di capitalizzazione di mercato e liquidity inferiori. Durante la liquidazione di massa delle posizioni a ottobre 2025, a seguito della minaccia di una nuova guerra commerciale tra Stati Uniti e Cina, BTC è sceso del 14%, mentre il protocollo Avalanche è crollato del 70%. Tuttavia, Ethereum si è comportato in maniera simile a BTC (perdendo il 12%), il che spiega perché CoinShares non sia molto incline a classificarlo come altcoin.

Le altcoin, inoltre, comportano un rischio di fallimento maggiore di BTC a causa della loro natura speculativa. Oltre il 50% delle monete disponibili su CoinGecko dal 2021, quasi sette milioni, sono scomparse. Alcuni progetti sono falliti (come le startup in fase iniziale), ma altri sono stati lanciati unicamente per estorcere denaro a ignare VC e piccoli investitori.       

Un altro importante rischio è rappresentato dal panorama normativo delle criptovalute, incoerente e in costante evoluzione, che crea incertezza per gli investitori. Le dApp, infine, sono soggette a interruzioni e violazioni.

Conclusione:

Mettiamolo in chiaro: non ci sarà un altro Bitcoin, ma l’universo delle altcoin è ampio. Alcuni di questi token potrebbero diventare l’infrastruttura per il sistema finanziario di domani, pertanto è importante effettuare ricerche approfondite e distinguere tra token che forniscono infrastrutture e servizi essenziali e quelli di natura più speculativa.
