Gli albori di Avalanche

Avalanche è una blockchain Layer 1 lanciata nel 2020 da Ava Labs, un team nato dalla ricerca guidata dal professore dell’Università Cornell Emin Gün Sirer.

Avalanche mira a garantire velocità e commissioni basse per l’uso privato, permettendo al contempo alle app di lanciare le proprie blockchain per applicazioni specifiche (“sottoreti”). Si tratta di un design in grado di attrarre aziende, giochi e piattaforme di asset tokenizzati che necessitano di performance prevedibili e set di regole personalizzate. La sottorete pilota Spruce di Citi del 2024 per la tokenization di fondi ne è un esempio rappresentativo.

Caratteristiche tecniche principali

Il progetto ha introdotto una nuova famiglia di protocolli di consenso (Snow o Snowman) progettata per aumentare il throughput e velocizzare la finalizzazione.

Attraverso il consenso Snow/Snowman, Avalanche fa in modo che tutti i computer della sua rete trovino un accordo il più velocemente possibile. Invece di un sistema in cui ciascun computer comunica con tutti gli altri (come nel caso delle prime blockchain), essi effettuano ripetuti e rapidi “sondaggi casuali” su un piccolo gruppo di altri computer. Se continua a emergere la stessa risposta, la rete la registra come definitiva. Il risultato è il raggiungimento della finalizzazione in pochi secondi, un indicatore diverso dal semplice numero di TPS.

Avalanche potrebbe essere classificata come Layer 0 o livello di regolamento delle reti, poiché il livello principale convalida le sottoreti, ossia reti sovrane che condividono l’economia del set di validatori di Avalanche e possono essere personalizzate (con o senza permessi, con token gas personalizzati, Ethereum Virtual Machine o altre macchine virtuali). Ciò permette ad Avalanche di svilupparsi orizzontalmente attraverso numerose sottoreti con un sistema nativo di comunicazione tra loro, mantenendo contemporaneamente tempi di finalizzazione bassi e compatibilità con le EVM familiari agli sviluppatori.

Avalanche pone l’accento sulla durata di pochi secondi del Time To Finality (TTF), ovvero il tempo di finalizzazione, e sul throughput elastico all’aumentare del carico sulle sottoreti. La documentazione del costruttore distingue esplicitamente il TPS dalla finalizzazione per evitare confronti inappropriati. Per quanto riguarda questo indicatore standard, è irrilevante misurare il TPS della C-Chain di Avalanche, poiché la sua funzione principale è quella di regolare le sottoreti, ciascuna con le proprie performance e attività.

A cosa serve AVAX?

  • Gas fee e commissioni: il token AVAX è utilizzato per pagare le commissioni di transazione sulla rete principale e può essere utilizzato per il pagamento delle gas fee su alcune sottoreti (altre potrebbero avere i propri token gas).

  • Staking e sicurezza: i validatori mettono in staking AVAX per proteggere la rete e ottenere ricompense; l’economia dei validatori è in continuo cambiamento sulla base di proposte di governance legate ad Avalanche9000 e le relative ACP (Avalanche Community Proposal).

  • Governance/configurazione: i parametri del protocollo e i percorsi di aggiornamento sono influenzati dalle proposte di governance on-chain e dai programmi della fondazione. Le regole delle sottoreti sono definite dai rispettivi sviluppatori.

  • Usi speciali: nelle sottoreti aziendali o con permessi (ad es., Spruce), AVAX potrebbe svolgere dei ruoli nello staking, nelle commissioni o nelle garanzie a seconda della configurazione della sottorete.

L’architettura flessibile permette ai progetti di offrire esperienze utente fluide, isolando al contempo la loro attività dalla congestione in altre parti della rete. Per esempio, la Federazione internazionale di calcio FIFA ha scelto Avalanche per la sua rete Layer 1 dedicata, creata per supportare la piattaforma di collezionabili digitali FIFA Collect.

L’interoperabilità è un altro pilastro fondamentale del design di Avalanche. La piattaforma semplifica lo spostamento di asset, come le stablecoin, tra una catena e l’altra dell’ecosistema attraverso funzioni di interoperabilità native. Le sottoreti, inoltre, possono comunicare direttamente tra loro utilizzando un protocollo di messaggistica. In questo modo le reti sovrane possono scambiarsi dati, avviare transazioni tra sottoreti e coordinarsi senza fare affidamento su bridge di terze parti, aumentando velocità e sicurezza.

È importante sottolineare che, secondo Messari, il numero di indirizzi attivi al giorno su Avalanche è aumentato in maniera significativa (+210%) nel secondo trimestre del 2025.

Infine, Avalanche è stata scelta da importanti operatori finanziari come piattaforma per l’emissione di asset reali, in particolare Franklin Templeton, il quale vi ha lanciato il suo mercato monetario BENJI; VanEck, che ha introdotto il suo fondo tokenizzato in titoli di Stato statunitensi VBILL; e la piattaforma Centrifuge, che ha collaborato con il protocollo Grove per emettere due prodotti Janus Henderson su Avalanche.
