Nei periodi di inflazione elevata e instabilità globale, gli investitori tendono generalmente ad affidarsi a classi di asset considerati “beni rifugio”. Per via della sua longevità, l'oro è tradizionalmente la prima scelta. Tuttavia, Bitcoin sta assumendo una posizione di concorrenza come nuovo bene rifugio, perché condivide con l'oro diverse caratteristiche comuni, alcune della quali potrebbero essere addirittura più efficaci.

In questo articolo esploreremo le similitudini tra Bitcoin e oro, per esporre successivamente come il primo può migliorare il rendimento in un portafoglio bilanciato.

Il ruolo tradizionale dell'oro e l'emergere di Bitcoin a confronto

I primi esempi che attestano l'uso dell'oro come bene risalgono a circa 5.000 anni fa, periodo in cui gli Egizi iniziarono a creare gioielli e altri ornamenti con questo materiale. Il primo uso come mezzo di scambio arrivò diverse migliaia di anni più tardi quando i Lidi, il cui regno era situato nella parte occidentale dell'odierna Turchia, coniarono le prime monete d'oro nel 564 a.C. Da allora ha mantenuto il suo status di fulcro del sistema finanziario globale, per esempio nei casi in cui i Paesi decidono di allineare le loro valute al suo valore. Il sistema aureo, nome che assunse questo sistema monetario, venne adottato in origine del Regno Unito agli inizi del XIX secolo e, nonostante alcune sospensioni occasionali, è stato impiegato ampiamente fino al termine dettato dagli Stati Uniti nel 1971.    

L'oro si è guadagnato la reputazione di bene rifugio, ossia un bene che mantiene il suo valore nel tempo, per via di molte sue caratteristiche:

  • Scarsità: secondo il Consiglio Mondiale dell'Oro (WGC), ne sono state estratte poco più di 210.000 tonnellate, mentre altre 59.000 sarebbero ancora nel sottosuolo.

  • Divisibilità: l'oro si può suddividere in pezzi più piccoli.

  • Portabilità: in piccole quantità, è relativamente facile da trasportare.

  • Resistenza: l'oro resiste al deterioramento per migliaia di anni.

L'oro ricopre diversi ruoli in un portafoglio d'investimento, in primo luogo come copertura contro l'inflazione dato che mantiene il suo potere d'acquisto. Con l'aumento dei prezzi, una valuta perde il suo potere d'acquisto perché i consumatori comprano meno beni a parità del valore di spesa. L'oro, al contrario, tende a mantenere o ad aumentare il suo valore. Per esempio, quando l' inflazione dell'Unione Europea aumentò da poco meno dell'1% del gennaio 2021 fino al 10,6% dell'ottobre 2022, l'oro crebbe di circa il 13%. Inoltre, offre un luogo sicuro in cui gli investitori possono rifugiarsi in tempi di instabilità geopolitica o economica e contribuisce alla diversificazione del portafoglio, una strategia che vedremo nella sezione successiva.

La storia di Bitcoin come classe di asset è decisamente più breve. Nel 2008, il suo creatore noto con lo pseudonimo di Satoshi Nakamoto pubblicò un White Paper in cui proponeva l'idea di una moneta digitale e il blocco genesi, ossia il primo gruppo di transazioni, venne estratto nel gennaio 2009.

Nato come mezzo di scambio, Bitcoin è stato riconosciuto come bene rifugio, o “oro digitale”, anche se apparentemente non ha molto in comune con questo metallo prezioso. In primo luogo, Satoshi ha limitato l'offerta totale di Bitcoin a 21 milioni. Il 94,14% è già in circolazione e ci si aspetta che le ultime monete verranno emesse entro il 2140. Bitcoin è anche durevole grazie alla natura decentralizzata della tecnologia blockchain che ne costituisce l'ossatura. Il tempo di attività della rete dal 2009 resta al 99,9% e ha visto l'ultima interruzione nel 2013. Infine, è facilmente divisibile – il taglio più piccolo, un Satoshi, rappresenta 100 milionesimi di un Bitcoin – e trasportabile, perché i titolari possono conservarlo in un portafoglio digitale.

 

Il ruolo di Bitcoin in un portafoglio bilanciato

La diversificazione è una strategia d'investimento che prevede la ripartizione del capitale tra diverse classi di asset, come azioni, obbligazioni, liquidità e criptovalute, anche se può essere applicata a diversi settori e regioni a livello globale. L'obiettivo è quello di ridurre al minimo l'impatto di una partecipazione poco performante sul rendimento complessivo del portafoglio.

La correlazione è un concetto chiave nella costruzione di un portafoglio diversificato, perché misura il grado in cui due asset si muovono nella stessa direzione. Gli investitori cercano sempre più un'esposizione a Bitcoin perché generalmente non è correlato ad altre classi di asset. Secondo CoinShares, dal 2019 la correlazione di Bitcoin con l'S&P 500, un indice delle 500 maggiori società quotate sui mercati statunitensi, è relativamente bassa, pari al 30%, il che significa che si muovono nella stessa direzione solo per circa un terzo del tempo. E nonostante Bitcoin sia considerato l'oro digitale, la sua correlazione con il metallo prezioso fisico è ancora più bassa, pari al 19% dal 2019.

La quantità di Bitcoin che gli investitori dovrebbero detenere dipende dalla loro propensione al rischio. Una ricerca di CoinShares ha misurato l'impatto delle diverse allocazioni sulla volatilità di un portafoglio (la fluttuazione dei rendimenti) e suggerisce che l'allocazione ottimale va dal 4 al 10%.

Per dimostrare l'effetto di Bitcoin sulla performance complessiva, CoinShares ha monitorato dal 2017 cinque portafogli modello:

  • Un'allocazione standard di 60% azioni e 40% obbligazioni;

  • Un'allocazione standard con una partecipazione del 4% in Bitcoin;

  • Il portafoglio All Weather di Ray Dalio, che sostituisce l'allocazione di oro al 7,5% con Bitcoin;

  • Il portafoglio Cockroach di Dylan Grice, che sostituisce l'allocazione di oro del 7% con Bitcoin;

La strategia di investimento della Yale Endowment (che non prevede oro), che sostituisce l'allocazione del 7% ai fondi di investimento immobiliare con Bitcoin.

Come illustrano i risultati riportati di seguito (in data 15 ottobre 2024), l'aggiunta di Bitcoin a uno qualsiasi di questi portafogli ha incrementato i rendimenti, pur avendo un impatto limitato sul drawdown massimo (ossia, il più grande calo singolo del valore di un portafoglio) e sulla volatilità. Inoltre, ha migliorato significativamente la diversificazione, come dimostra la minore correlazione (rispetto all'allocazione standard).

Per esempio, se una particolare azione è in rialzo, potrebbe causare lo spostamento dell'allocazione di un portafoglio standard al 70% di azioni e 30% di obbligazioni. Quando questo accade, gli investitori devono attuare una strategia di gestione del rischio nota come ribilanciamento, che prevede l'acquisto o la vendita di partecipazioni per ripristinare l'allocazione originale.

Conclusioni

Bitcoin si è affermato come bene rifugio perché è scarso, divisibile, portatile e durevole. Di conseguenza, in un portafoglio potrebbe compiere la stessa funzione dell'oro, ossia fare da copertura contro l'inflazione, rifugio sicuro in caso di instabilità geopolitica o economica e fonte di diversificazione.

La costruzione di un portafoglio diversificato comporta l'investimento in diverse classi di asset e, in alcuni casi, in diversi Paesi e settori. Bitcoin è stato un'efficace fonte di diversificazione perché non è correlato ad altri asset rischiosi come le azioni. Una ricerca di CoinShares dimostra che l'allocazione di una quota compresa tra il 4 e il 10% in Bitcoin dal 2015 ha migliorato la performance e la diversificazione dei portafogli standard, con un impatto limitato sul drawdown massimo e sulla volatilità.
