Oft wurde Bitcoin als eine Art digitaler Spielplatz interpretiert, auf dem sich nur Tech-Liebhaber und libertäre Idealisten tummeln. Kritiker werten es als „nerdiges Nischenprojekt“ ab, das vollkommen abgekoppelt vom etablierten Finanz- und Konsumwesen existiert. Diese Sichtweisen sind jedoch alles andere als zutreffend. Von seinen Anfängen als grundlegendes Experiment bis zu seinem aktuellen Status als weltweit akzeptierter finanzieller Vermögenswert hat Bitcoin sein transformatives Potenzial in zahlreichen Sektoren unter Beweis gestellt.

Peer-to-Peer-Zahlungstechnologie

Bitcoins Werdegang von einem obskuren Whitepaper, das 2008 unter dem Pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto veröffentlicht wurde, zu einem Multi-Billionen-Dollar-Vermögenswert ist einmalig. Bitcoin war die erste dezentrale digitale Währung, die Peer-to-Peer-Transaktionen ohne Intermediäre erlaubte. Auch jenseits seiner technischen Innovationen ist Bitcoin zur Lösung für viele finanzielle Ineffizienzen geworden.

Die frühen Bitcoin-Nutzer waren eine Mischung aus technisch versierten Personen und Verfechtern der Dezentralisierung. Auf diesen fundamentalen Anfängen liegt der Grundstein für Bitcoins rasche Expansion in den Privatkundenmarkt. Die hohe Akzeptanz wird durch beeindruckende Zahlen untermauert: Laut der Exchange Crypto.com [1] hat die weltweite Nutzerbasis von Krypto 617 Millionen Besitzer erreicht. Monatlich werden zwischen 30 und 60 Millionen aktive Bitcoin-Adressen gezählt, wobei monatlich 220 Millionen einzigartige Adressen verwendet werden.

Mit der Verbreitung von Bitcoin-Geldautomaten – inzwischen gibt es weltweit über 38.000 [2] – und -Kassensystemen wird dazu beigetragen, die Lücke zwischen digitalem und physischem Einzelhandel zu schließen.

Bitcoin in der Alltagsnutzung

Die Verwendung von Bitcoin und anderen Kryptowährungen steigt immer mehr an, auch in Europa. Ein eindrucksvolles Beispiel ist der Russisch-Ukrainische Krieg: Nach Angaben des Unternehmens Elliptic [3] haben Kryptowährungen wie Bitcoin, Ether und USDT (ein an den Dollar gekoppelter Stablecoin) über 210 Millionen Dollar an Spenden für die Ukraine eingebracht. Auch weltweit nimmt die Nutzung von Kryptowährungen beim Online-Shopping zu. Laut einer Umfrage von Arlington Research für Kaspersky [4] glauben 44 % der Befragten, dass Krypto-Zahlungen eine gängige Option für Online-Einkäufe sein werden. Darüber hinaus äußerten 68 % der Befragten den Wunsch nach mehr Möglichkeiten, Krypto zum Bezahlen von Einkäufen, wie Videospielen, Lebensmitteln und sogar Autos, zu verwenden.

Laut einer Studie von Future Market Insights [5] wird für den globalen Markt für Krypto-Zahlungen eine durchschnittliche jährliche Wachstumsrate (CAGR) von 14,1 %, und somit ein Anstieg von 1,3 Milliarden US-Dollar im Jahr 2023 auf 4,8 Milliarden US-Dollar im Jahr 2033 erwartet. Unternehmen wie BitPay und Coinbase Commerce ermöglichen es Unternehmen, Bitcoin-Zahlungen lückenlos zu akzeptieren, was die Akzeptanz durch Einzelhändler und E-Commerce-Plattformen fördert. Zahlungsnetzwerke wie Visa und Mastercard haben sich ebenfalls mit Kryptounternehmen zusammengeschlossen, um mit Debitkarten kompatible Kryptowährungen einzuführen – ein Zeichen für die zunehmende Integration von Bitcoin in traditionelle Zahlungssysteme.

Vorteile bei Überweisungen

Bitcoin ist ein Rettungsanker in Regionen, in denen die traditionelle Bankinfrastruktur begrenzt oder unzugänglich ist. Über 1,4 Milliarden Menschen weltweit haben kein Bankkonto [6], und Bitcoin bietet mit seinem kostengünstigen, grenzüberschreitenden Transaktionssystem eine Alternative. So profitiert etwa der Überweisungsverkehr erheblich von Bitcoins geringeren Transaktionsgebühren im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Diensten. 

Selbst in Ländern mit robusten Bankensystemen bieten Kryptolösungen einzigartige Vorteile. In Schweden kann das BankID-System für legale Einwanderer eine Herausforderung darstellen: Nach Schätzungen der Zahlungsanfrage [7] haben fast 10 % der erwachsenen Bevölkerung keinen Zugang zur BankID. Bitcoin bietet eine zugänglichere und flexiblere Alternative für Geldüberweisungen und Verwahrung.

Wachsendes Interesse von Institutionen

In den letzten zehn Jahren hat sich die Akzeptanz von Bitcoin über öffentliche Nutzer hinaus auch auf große Institutionen ausgeweitet. Dieses Vordringen ins institutionelle Finanzwesen begann mit Skepsis. Frühe Kritiker taten Bitcoin als Spekulationsblase ab. Heute jedoch wird Bitcoin zunehmend als legitimer Vermögenswert anerkannt.

Dieser Wandel zeigt sich in der Einführung von Krypto-ETFs in den Vereinigten Staaten, die rekordverdächtige Zuflüsse verzeichneten und damit die Gold-ETFs übertrafen. Anlageprodukte mit digitalen Vermögenswerten machen inzwischen mehr als 140 Milliarden US-Dollar aus [8] (Stand: 31. Dezember 2024) und haben ein erhebliches Wachstumspotenzial, da Intermediäre beginnen, sie in größerem Umfang zu vertreiben.

Die wachsende Attraktivität von Bitcoin ist auch mit seiner Verwendung als Inflationsschutz verbunden. Da die Inflation weltweit Rekordhöhen erreicht hat, suchen viele Anleger Schutz durch Sachwerte wie Gold oder Bitcoin. Bitcoin hat die gleichen Eigenschaften wie Gold – Knappheit und Langlebigkeit – und bietet gleichzeitig zusätzliche Vorteile wie leichtere Übertragbarkeit und Überprüfbarkeit durch die Blockchain-Technologie, ein dezentrales digitales Hauptbuch.

Leading the charge: institutional players are embracing crypto

Unternehmen und nationale Rücklagen

Viele Unternehmen haben Bitcoin eingeführt, um ihre Treasuries zu vergrößern, wie eine eigene Website zu diesem Thema zeigt: [9]. MicroStrategy zum Beispiel hat Bitcoin zu einem Kernbestandteil seiner Entwicklungsstrategie gemacht und besitzt über 140.000 BTC. Auch Tesla und SpaceX, die Bitcoin in ihre Bilanzen aufgenommen haben, sind zu nennen. Kürzlich kündigte die Deutsche Telekom Pläne zum Mining von Bitcoin an.

Auf nationaler Ebene machen sich auch Regierungen Bitcoin zu eigen. El Salvador und Bhutan haben es vorgemacht, wobei El Salvador Bitcoin im Jahr 2021 zum gesetzlichen Zahlungsmittel macht. Die Vereinigten Staaten kündigten kürzlich Pläne zur Schaffung einer nationalen Bitcoin-Rücklage unter der Regierung von Präsident Donald Trump an, was eine breitere Akzeptanz von Bitcoin als strategischen Vermögenswert signalisiert. Andere Länder, wie die Schweiz, Russland und Brasilien, sollen Gerüchten zufolge ähnliche Initiativen in Erwägung ziehen.

Laut Filip Karađorđević, dem Erbprinzen von Serbien und heutigen Vermögensverwalter, „gibt es strategische Rücklagen auf nationalstaatlicher Ebene bereits hinter verschlossenen Türen“. Dies deutet darauf hin, dass Bitcoin sich von einem Nischenprojekt zu einem wichtigen Teil der globalen Finanzinfrastruktur entwickelt hat.
