„Tokenomics ist wie eine Zwiebel“: Mohamed Ezeldin von Animoca Brands über Anreize, Eigentum und die Zukunft

Wir wurden erstmals auf Mohamed Ezeldin bei einer Konferenz in Lissabon im Jahr 2024 aufmerksam, wo er die Komplexität der Gestaltung von Tokenökonomien – in der Krypto-Welt kurz „Tokenomics“ genannt – erläuterte. Heute ist er Head of Tokenomics bei Animoca Brands (einem in Hongkong ansässigen Konglomerat mit Beteiligungen an über 500 Unternehmen, darunter Kraken, MetaMask, Ledger und OpenSea) und unterstützt Portfoliofirmen bei der Gestaltung ihrer Token-Launches. Mit einem Hintergrund in Mathematik und Lehre bringt er eine seltene Klarheit in eine zentrale Disziplin der Kryptoindustrie.

Mohamed Ezeldins Interesse an Krypto begann nicht besonders früh. Zum ersten Mal kam er 2013 mit Bitcoin in Berührung – auf die halb zufällige Weise, wie viele Menschen damals: über Freunde, Foren und die frühe Faszination des Internets für etwas, das zu seltsam klang, um wahr zu sein. Eine Zeit lang blieb es im Hintergrund. Dann, im Jahr 2017, schickte ihm ein Freund etwas, das alles veränderte.
„Ein Freund hat mir das Bitcoin-Whitepaper geschickt. Als Mathematiker war ich sofort begeistert“, erklärt er.

Die Faszination war weniger finanzieller als struktureller Natur: Bitcoins Lösung für das Byzantinische-Generäle-Problem – eine Möglichkeit für Fremde, sich ohne zentrale Autorität auf eine Wahrheit zu einigen – erschien ihm wie ein sauberes, elegantes mathematisches Konzept, das Wirklichkeit geworden war. Dieser Moment zog ihn in den Bann: Er wollte verstehen, warum ein Netzwerk Menschen in großem Maßstab koordinieren kann.

Wie bei fast allen, die in dieser Zeit in die Branche kamen, prallte die Neugier jedoch schnell auf den Rausch des ICO-Zyklus.
„Ich habe sehr schnell ICOs entdeckt, die Fundamentaldaten vergessen und bin ein bisschen verrückt geworden.“

Er sagt das ganz nüchtern, ohne Stolz oder Verlegenheit. Damals waren ICOs so etwas wie ein Initiationsritus der Branche: eine Phase, in der Narrative schneller waren als die Realität und Tokens weniger als Bestandteile einer Ökonomie behandelt wurden, sondern eher wie Lotterielose. Dutzende Start-ups sammelten zwischen 40 und 260 Millionen US-Dollar ein, und einige Nutzer verdienten viel Geld, indem sie auf die richtigen Projekte setzten. Andere sahen nie eine Rendite.

Für Mohamed war es jedoch auch eine lehrreiche Erfahrung. Wenn der Hype vorbei ist, bleibt immer dasselbe übrig: Anreize. Genau hier kommt Tokenomics ins Spiel. Fragt man ihn, was Tokenomics ist, beginnt er bei der grundlegendsten Ebene: Angebot und Nachfrage. Doch es steckt mehr dahinter.

„Eine andere Art, darüber nachzudenken, ist, es sich wie eine Zwiebel vorzustellen … mit ihren verschiedenen Schichten.“

Eine Tokenökonomie kann mit Emissionsplänen, Liquidität und Preismechanismen beginnen. Doch das ist nur die äußere Schale. Im Inneren stehen die Menschen, die das System zum Funktionieren bringen:
„Holder, Builder, Nutzer, Trader, Liquiditätsanbieter und Governance-Teilnehmer – jeder mit eigenen Anreizen, Zeithorizonten und Bruchpunkten.“

Tokenomics bedeutet aus seiner Sicht, ein Spiel zu entwerfen, in dem „diese Rollen lange genug koexistieren können, damit das Netzwerk wachsen kann“.

Finanzbildung zur Priorität machen

Diese Perspektive erklärt auch, warum er so gut zu Animoca Brands passt. Das Unternehmen wird oft als Schwergewicht im Venture Capital beschrieben, doch Mohamed sieht es eher als operatives Ökosystem.

„Animoca Brands ist im Grunde ein Ökosystem-Builder.“

Ja, das Unternehmen investiert – aber es berät, strukturiert und baut auch. Tokenomics, Market Making, Strategie, Marketing: Das Ziel ist nicht nur, Gewinner auszuwählen, sondern die Voraussetzungen dafür zu schaffen, dass Netzwerke überleben können.

Die Perspektive, die Animoca einnimmt, basiert auf digitalen Eigentumsrechten: der Überzeugung, dass Eigentum im Internet nativ sein kann, standardmäßig übertragbar ist und programmierbar auf eine Weise, die traditionelle Systeme nicht erreichen. Wie Animoca-Gründer Yat Siu einmal gegenüber CNBC sagte, besteht das Ziel darin,

„ein gemeinsames Netzwerk zu schaffen, das Nutzern digitale Eigentumsrechte und Creators einen Anteil am Wert gibt“.

Mohameds Aufgabe besteht darin, diese Überzeugung in funktionierende Ökonomien zu übersetzen.

Sein Ziel ist Bildung – insbesondere finanzielle Bildung –, denn ohne sie verstehen Nutzer nicht, was es bedeutet, einen Token, einen Vermögenswert oder ein Stück digitaler Kultur zu „besitzen“.

„Viele Menschen verstehen nicht, was es bedeutet, etwas zu besitzen“, fügt er hinzu.

Er sieht Eigentum als kulturelle Brücke in Richtung Web3:

„Unsere Daten sind etwas, das ständig gegen uns verwendet wird, und große Unternehmen monetarisieren sie. Für mich wird Bildung über Finanzkompetenz und Eigentum den Weg für bessere Nutzer und stärkere Community-Mitglieder im Ökosystem ebnen.“

Wenn Menschen das verstehen, könnten On-Chain-Ökosysteme größer werden und Wertflüsse weniger extraktiv sein, glaubt er.

„Ich sehe, dass alles tokenisiert und on-chain gebracht wird“, fährt er fort.

Und Mohamed scheut sich nicht, klare Überzeugungen zu äußern:

„Das ist keine Finanzberatung (Anmerkung der Redaktion: Wir betonen das ausdrücklich angesichts dessen, was folgt), aber habt keine Angst, in einen Token zu investieren, der um 99 % gefallen ist. Ich sage das, weil viele Tokens, die vor zwei oder drei Jahren gestartet sind, in einer Zeit entstanden sind, in der Tokenomics noch sehr früh entwickelt war. Sie wurden mitten im Hype gestartet, waren überbewertet und erlebten dann einen starken Rückgang. Wenn das Team jedoch weiterhin baut, könnte es noch Rendite geben – basierend auf dem Produkt, das entwickelt wird, und auf dem Product-Market-Fit.“

Das sagt jemand, der offen zugibt, dass „der Großteil [seines] Portfolios in Krypto investiert ist – im Guten wie im Schlechten“.

„Wenn Sie schnell Geld verdienen wollen, sind Sie kein Investor, sondern ein Trader. Es ist sehr wichtig, zwischen beidem zu unterscheiden. Wenn der Zeithorizont ein, zwei Jahre oder länger ist, dann ist Investition der richtige Begriff“, schließt er.
