Bitcoin überwindet 80.000 US-Dollar, während die Renditen den höchsten Stand seit 19 Jahren erreichen

Digitale Vermögenswerte haben sich in der vergangenen Woche überraschend widerstandsfähig gezeigt. Die restriktive Botschaft der Federal Reserve aus der Vorwoche und das Scheitern des CLARITY Act im Senat hinterließen ein schwieriges Umfeld: Die Inflation ist nach wie vor zu hoch, die Geldpolitik bleibt straff, und der Gesetzgebungsprozess zu einem US-Rahmenwerk für die Marktstruktur digitaler Vermögenswerte ist ins Stocken geraten. Und doch gerieten die Kurse nicht ins Rutschen, sondern zogen an. Bitcoin erholte sich von rund 75.000 US-Dollar, gewann im Wochenverlauf etwa 13 % hinzu, notierte am 23. September über 87.000 US-Dollar und pendelte sich bei knapp 84.000 US-Dollar ein.1 Damit ist die Marke von 80.000 US-Dollar klar durchbrochen. Für die Überwindung dieser Schwelle hatten wir in der Vorwoche noch einen Katalysator vorausgesetzt.

Aus unserer Sicht bedeutet dies nicht, dass sich Krypto vom makroökonomischen Umfeld abgekoppelt hätte. Die Bewegung spiegelt vielmehr mehrere Faktoren wider: ein klareres regulatorisches Fundament, die anhaltende Akkumulation durch Großanleger, kräftige Mittelzuflüsse und die wachsende Sorge um die Tragfähigkeit der US-Fiskal- und Geldpolitik.

Maßgeblich ist nun das Rahmenwerk der SEC

Der CLARITY Act verfehlte die 60 Stimmen, die für den weiteren Gesetzgebungsprozess erforderlich gewesen wären; der Senat lehnte den Antrag auf Beendigung der Debatte (cloture) am 15. September mit 49 zu 50 Stimmen ab.2 Formal betrachtet ist das ein Rückschlag. Praktisch betrachtet ändert sich weniger, als die Schlagzeile nahelegt, denn die Aufsichtsbehörde hatte ihr eigenes Rahmenwerk bereits vorgelegt. Im März veröffentlichte die SEC eine Taxonomie, die digitale Rohstoffe, digitale Sammlerstücke, digitale Werkzeuge, Stablecoins und digitale Wertpapiere umfasst, und legte dar, wie das Wertpapierrecht auf Staking, auf Airdrops und auf wrapped Vermögenswerte anzuwenden ist, die keine Wertpapiere darstellen.2 Dieses Rahmenwerk war als Ergänzung zu einer Gesetzgebung konzipiert, mit deren Verabschiedung gerechnet wurde. Da der Gesetzgebungsprozess nun stockt, wird es zum maßgeblichen Regime statt zu einer Übergangslösung, und sowohl die SEC als auch die CFTC behalten die Befugnis, es weiter auszubauen. Entschieden ist damit nicht, wie die Regeln lauten, sondern wer sie schreibt, und die Antwort lautet vorerst: die Aufsichtsbehörden.

Besser messbar war die Stütze durch die Mittelflüsse. Unsere Daten zeigen branchenweit Zuflüsse von rund 3,5 Milliarden US-Dollar in Investmentprodukte auf digitale Vermögenswerte innerhalb der vergangenen fünf Handelstage, eine deutliche Umkehr gegenüber den Rücknahmen, die zur Monatsmitte verzeichnet wurden. Zudem akkumulieren Großanleger seit August weiter, wenngleich in relativ moderatem Umfang. Auch vom Ölmarkt kam Unterstützung: Nach fünf Verlusttagen in Folge ist Brent wieder unter 100 US-Dollar je Barrel gefallen, was den unmittelbaren Inflationsdruck etwas mindert.1

Die interessantere Entwicklung ist jedoch, wie sich Krypto angesichts der erneut restriktiveren Töne verhalten hat. Die US-PMI-Daten fielen stärker aus als erwartet und untermauerten die Einschätzung, dass die Wirtschaftsaktivität robust bleibt, während sich die Ölpreise auf erhöhtem Niveau halten. Auch Vertreter der Fed schlugen schärfere Töne an. Michael Barr verwies auf steigende Inflationsrisiken und nachlassende Arbeitsmarktrisiken, während Austan Goolsbee davor warnte, dass der Energiepreisschock zu einer hartnäckigeren Inflation führen könnte. Die Märkte reagierten deutlich: Die implizite Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Zinserhöhung im Oktober stieg auf rund 70 %.

Noch weniger Interpretationsspielraum ließen die Renditen der US-Staatsanleihen. Die zehnjährige Rendite erreichte am 23. September 5,12 % und damit den höchsten Stand seit 2007.1 In einem konventionellen makroökonomischen Rahmen ist das erheblicher Gegenwind für Bitcoin. Höhere Renditen machen Staatsanleihen attraktiver und verschärfen die Finanzierungsbedingungen; eine restriktivere Fed belastet liquiditätssensible Vermögenswerte zudem in aller Regel. Bitcoin gab im Tagesverlauf von seinen Höchstständen zwar nach, jedoch weit weniger, als es das Ausmaß der Neubewertung am Zinsmarkt normalerweise erwarten ließe, und beendete die Woche deutlich über seinem Ausgangsniveau.

Nicht das Zinsniveau, sondern der Rahmen

Damit geraten die Fed und das US-Finanzministerium in eine zunehmend schwierige Lage. Bleibt die Inflation erhöht, könnte sich die Fed zu weiteren Zinserhöhungen gezwungen sehen. Höhere Zinsen setzen die Staatsfinanzen und den Markt für US-Staatsanleihen jedoch stärker unter Druck. Steigen die Renditen weiter, nimmt auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit aggressiverer Eingriffe zu, sei es über umfangreichere Ankäufe von US-Staatsanleihen oder über andere Versuche, die Renditen am langen Ende zu drücken.

Das bleibt ein Extremrisiko und nicht unser Basisszenario, gewinnt aber zunehmend an Relevanz. Das auffälligste Merkmal der vergangenen Woche war die Kombination aus kräftigen Mittelzuflüssen und positiver Kursdynamik, und das vor dem Hintergrund eines deutlich restriktiveren Zinsumfelds. Krypto hat sich nicht vom makroökonomischen Umfeld abgekoppelt. Vielmehr verlagert sich die Sorge des Marktes offenbar: weg von den Zinsen allein und hin zu der Frage, ob der politische Rahmen, der diese Zinsen trägt, selbst tragfähig ist.
