Knappheit ist ein Hauptmerkmal des Bitcoin. Der unter dem Pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto bekannte Gründer des Bitcoin versuchte, diese zu erhalten, indem er einen Mechanismus in das zugrunde liegende Protokoll einbaute, der die an die Miner gezahlten Blockprämien in regelmäßigen Abständen um die Hälfte reduziert. Die Ausgabe neuer Bitcoins erfolgt ausschließlich über Blockprämien, und dieser Mechanismus verlangsamt die Geschwindigkeit, mit der sie in Umlauf kommen.   

Anleger beobachten die Halvings, wie sie in der Krypto-Community genannt werden, sehr genau, da sie sich auf den Preis auswirken. In diesem Artikel wird erklärt, wie Halvings ablaufen, bevor deren Rolle bei der Steuerung von Angebot und Nachfrage sowie die Korrelation des Bitcoin mit anderen Anlageklassen während der Halvings untersucht wird. 

Die Mechanismen hinter Bitcoin-Halvings

Die Miner spielen eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Aufrechterhaltung des Bitcoin-Protokolls. Sie lösen komplexe mathematische Rätsel, die eine beträchtliche Menge an Rechenleistung erfordern, um das Recht zu erhalten, Transaktionen zu validieren und neue Blöcke in die Chain aufzunehmen. Im Gegenzug erhalten sie Blockprämien in Form von frisch geprägten Bitcoins. 

In seinem ursprünglichen Whitepaper erklärte Satoshi:

„Das stetige Hinzufügen einer konstanten Menge neuer Coins ist vergleichbar mit Goldschürfern, die Ressourcen aufwenden, um Gold in Umlauf zu bringen. In unserem Fall sind es CPU-Zeit und Strom, die verbraucht werden.“

Der wichtigste Mechanismus, den Satoshi einsetzte, um die Knappheit des Bitcoin aufrechtzuerhalten, war die Begrenzung des maximalen Angebots auf 21 Millionen Bitcoins (zum 2. Mai 2024 sind 19,6 Millionen im Umlauf). Mit dieser Obergrenze sollten die Auswirkungen einer inflationären Geldpolitik vermieden werden, wie sie von den Zentralbanken zur Ankurbelung einer schwachen Wirtschaft eingesetzt wird, beispielsweise durch quantitative Lockerung. Satoshi spielte mit der folgenden Nachricht im ersten Transaktionsblock, der Anfang 2009 geschürft wurde, auf diese Motivation an:

„The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks” (Schatzkanzler steht kurz vor der zweiten Bankenrettung).

Halvings treten jedes Mal auf, wenn das Bitcoin-Protokoll 210.000 Blöcke verarbeitet hat, was etwa vier Jahre dauert. Es haben bereits mehrere Halvings stattgefunden: Die ursprüngliche Blockprämie von 50 BTC fiel nach dem ersten Halving im November 2012 auf 25 BTC und halbierte sich infolge der folgenden Halvings im Juli 2016, Mai 2020 und April 2024 jeweils erneut. Derzeit liegt die Prämie bei 3,125 BTC.

Man müsste meinen, dass die Kürzung der Blockprämien die Miner abschreckt, zumal sie nach dem letzten Halving, das voraussichtlich im Jahr 2140 stattfinden wird, ganz wegfallen werden, doch die Prämien stellen nur eine mögliche Einnahmequelle für Miner dar. Diese können auch durch die Verarbeitung von Transaktionen Bitcoin verdienen.

Angebotsdynamik und Preisverhalten

Das Prinzip von Angebot und Nachfrage hat einen großen Einfluss auf die Finanzmärkte, und der Bitcoin bildet hier keine Ausnahme. Die Begrenzung der Gesamtauflage und die Kontrolle der Ausgabe neuer Coins sollten den Preis theoretisch antreiben.  

Dieser Effekt hat sich bei früheren Halvings bemerkbar gemacht:

  • November 2012: der Bitcoin-Preis stieg von 10 USD zum Zeitpunkt des Halvings auf 140 USD im folgenden April. Ende 2013 überstieg er dann die Marke von 1.000 USD.

  • Juli 2016: Nach einem stetigen Anstieg im Vorfeld des Halvings setzte der Bitcoin diese Trend bis März 2017 fort und stieg dann bis Ende des Jahres auf 16.000 USD.  

  • Mai 2020: Ein ähnliches Muster zeigte sich beim dritten Halving, als der Bitcoin-Preis von 9.000 USD im Mai auf über 10.000 USD im Oktober kletterte, bevor er im April des folgenden Jahres ein neues Rekordhoch von 63.000 USD erreichte.

Die Knappheit des Bitcoins verstärkt auch das Narrativ vom Bitcoin als digitales Gold. Bitcoin weist viele Eigenschaften eines Wertaufbewahrungsmittels auf, wie etwa Knappheit, Teilbarkeit, Übertragbarkeit und Beständigkeit. Man könnte sogar behaupten, dass der Bitcoin dem Gold überlegen ist, da er leichter zu transportieren ist und seine kleinste Werteinheit ein Millionstel eines Bitcoins, ein so genannter Satoshi, ist.

Die Marktkapitalisierung von Gold ist mit 15,5 Billionen USD (Stand: 2. Mai 2024) deutlich größer, trotz der jüngsten Rallye, bei der Bitcoin zum ersten Mal 73 000 USD übertraf. Diese Differenz verdeutlicht allerdings die potenzielle Größe des Marktes. Analysten von Goldman Sachs haben vorausgesagt, dass der Bitcoin den Marktanteil von Gold schmälern wird, wenn er sich weiter durchsetzt. Ein Anteil von 50 % würde den Preis auf 100.000 USD steigen lassen.

Zum Schluss noch ein kurzer Ausblick auf die Auswirkungen von Halvings auf Miner: CoinShares Mining-Bericht von 2024 prognostiziert, dass Betreiber mit geringen Gemeinkosten und langen Laufzeiten wie Riot, Bitfarms und TeraWulf am besten positioniert sind, um selbst bei einem Bitcoin-Preis von 40.000 USD zu florieren, auch wenn die Kosten nach dem Halving 2024 steigen. 

Korrelation mit anderen Arten von Vermögenswerten

Die Korrelation ist ein wichtiges Konzept, wenn es um Investitionen geht, denn sie misst, inwieweit sich zwei Vermögenswerte in dieselbe Richtung entwickeln. Der Bitcoin hat in der Vergangenheit eine negative Korrelation mit traditionellen Vermögenswerten aufgewiesen - die Grafik unten zeigt, dass sich der Bitcoin in 18 % der Zeit in dieselbe Richtung wie Gold und in 34 % der Zeit wie der S&P 500 bewegt.

Bitcoin price graph (USD)Wie bereits erwähnt, stagnierte der Bitcoin vor dem Halving und stieg dann bis Oktober 2020 stetig an, als er einen starken Aufschwung verzeichnete, der bis März 2021 zu einem Gewinn von 500 % führte. Im Gegensatz dazu begann der Aufwärtstrend bei Gold Ende 2019 und setzte sich bis August 2020 fort, als sich der Trend umkehrte. Bis März 2021 hatte es über 60 % dieser Gewinne wieder abgegeben. Wenn man bei den Aktien den S&P 500 als Maßstab nimmt, sieht man, dass der Index Anfang 2020 um 30 % einbrach, als die Coronapandemie die Wirtschaft zum Erliegen brachte. Er erholte sich jedoch relativ schnell und stieg bis Ende 2021 um 100 % gegenüber dem Tiefststand zu Beginn des Jahres.

Bei Bitcoin-Halvings handelt es sich um einen Mechanismus, den Satoshi Nakamoto in das Protokoll integriert hat, um die Knappheit des Bitcoin zu bewahren. Im Rahmen dieser Halvings werden die an die Miner gezahlten Blockprämien jeweils um 50 % reduziert. Halvings finden etwa alle vier Jahre statt und werden von den Anlegern wegen der Auswirkungen auf den Bitcoin-Kurs, der nach früheren Ereignissen gestiegen ist, genau beobachtet. Durch die Verringerung des Angebots tragen Halvings auch zu Bitcoins Status als digitales Gold bei. In Anbetracht der Marktkapitalisierung von Gold in Höhe von 15,5 Billionen USD empfiehlt es sich, diesen Trend im Auge zu behalten.
