Die Anfänge von Polkadot

Polkadot wurde von Ethereum-Mitbegründer Gavin Wood entworfen und führte die Relay Chain nach mehreren Jahren Forschung und Testnetzwerken im Mai 2020 ein. Das Design von Polkadot basiert auf einem Layer-0-Netzwerk, das zahlreiche Blockchains (Parachains) unter einem gemeinsamen Sicherheitsschirm miteinander verbindet und zum Zwecke der Interoperabilität eine Nachrichtenebene (XCM) bereitstellt.

Die Entwicklung wird von Parity Technologies geleitet – einem weiteren Unternehmen, das Wood mitgründete – und von der Web3 Foundation beaufsichtigt. Nach einer dreijährigen Schaffenspause verkündete Gavin Wood im August 2025 seine Rückkehr als CEO von Parity Technologies.

Die wichtigsten Merkmale

Das Konsensverfahren von Polkadot heißt Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) und funktioniert so: Validatoren setzen DOT ein, um Blöcke auf der Relay Chain zu erzeugen, während Nominatoren ihren Einsatz an Validatoren delegieren. Die Relay Chain sorgt für Sicherheit und koordiniert den Konsens für die angeschlossenen Parachains, die ihre eigenen Regeln festlegen können. Die Kommunikation zwischen den Parachains funktioniert via Cross‑Consensus Messaging (XCM), und die einzelnen Nachrichten können über Brücken an externe Netzwerke weitergeleitet werden.

Polkadot ist modular aufgebaut. Entwickler nutzen das Polkadot-SDK zur Erstellung ihrer eigenen Blockchains (Parachains) und haben dabei die Möglichkeit, die Programmierumgebung oder auch das Gebührenmodell ganz nach ihren Wünschen auszuwählen. Im Mai 2025 brachte die Web3 Foundation in einer Partnerschaft mit dem Infrastrukturunternehmen Asphere ein Toolkit heraus, mit dem Teams ihre eigenen Rollups – das sind leichte Ketten, die oben auf Polkadot aufliegen – entwickeln können, ohne Low-Level-Code schreiben zu müssen. Diese Rollups können an verschiedene Anwendungsfälle angepasst werden und sogar existierende Ethereum-Anwendungen portieren. Das Toolkit liefert vorgefertigte Vorlagen und übernimmt komplexe Aufgaben wie Konsens, Sicherheit und Node-Verwaltung, sodass in Projekten schnell leistungsstarke Ketten mit Polkadots integrierter Interoperabilität und Sicherheitsfunktionen eingesetzt werden können.

Polkadot befindet sich mitten in einem großen Upgrade namens „Polkadot 2.0“, durch das das Netzwerk deutlich flexibler werden soll. Heute müssen einzelne Parachains noch einen festen Slot gewinnen, um sich an die zentrale Kette von Polkadot anzuschließen. Im neuen System werden diese Slots durch „Cores“ ersetzt, die Entwickler je nach Bedarf mieten können, in etwa so wie der Kauf von Cloud-Rechenzeit. Im ersten Schritt zu diesem Ziel, „Asynchronous Backing“ genannt, wurde die Blockproduktionszeit bereits von 12 auf 6 Sekunden halbiert. Viele Parachains können nun gleichzeitig Transaktionen verarbeiten, was die Geschwindigkeit des Netzwerks erhöht.

Netzwerk-Performance

Polkadots Geschwindigkeit ergibt sich aus der Zusammenarbeit der zentralen Relay Chain mit vielen kleineren Ketten.  Das kann man sich wie einen Computer mit vielen Prozessorkernen vorstellen, die gleichzeitig arbeiten: Indem die Arbeit auf mehrere Kerne verteilt wird, kann Polkadot hunderttausende Transaktionen pro Sekunde abwickeln. Durch ein kürzlich eingeführtes Upgrade namens „Asynchronous Backing“ wurde die Zeit zur Aufnahme eines neuen Transaktionssatzes auf etwa sechs Sekunden halbiert, sodass Bestätigungen schneller erfolgen.  Die Zuverlässigkeit des Netzwerks hängt von einer großen Gruppe unabhängiger Validatoren (rund 300) ab, die abwechselnd Blöcke produzieren und Belohnungen dafür erhalten, dass sie online bleiben. Wenn zu viele ausfallen, kann die Performance sinken, doch das Staking-System ist darauf ausgelegt, sie aktiv zu halten.

Theoretisch ist die Relay Chain in der Lage, 100.000 Transaktionen pro Sekunde (TPS) zu verarbeiten, und die Web3 Foundation sprach auf der Consensus 2025 in Toronto sogar von über 623.000 TPS. Laut Chainspect verarbeitet die Blockchain im August 2025 jedoch etwa 8 TPS, mit einem Höchstwert von 462 TPS.

Wofür ist Polkadot gedacht?

DOT ist der native Token von Polkadot und erfüllt vier zentrale Funktionen:

  • Transaktionsgebühren: DOT wird für die Zahlung von Gebühren für Nachrichten und Transaktionen auf der Relay Chain genutzt und dabei entweder verbrannt oder in das Treasury überwiesen.

  • Staking: Validatoren müssen DOT staken, um an der Blockproduktion teilzunehmen; Nominatoren staken DOT, um Validatoren auszuwählen.  Staking-Belohnungen stammen aus Inflation und Transaktionsgebühren.

  • Governance: DOT-Inhaber stimmen über Referenden ab, in denen Protokoll-Upgrades, Treasury-Ausgaben und Parameteränderungen festgelegt werden. In Zeiten von Polkadot 2.0 wird die On-Chain-Governance noch autonomer ablaufen.

  • Coretime-Käufe und Sicherheiten: Mit der Einführung agiler Coretime werden Entwickler DOT nutzen, um Coretime zu erwerben und Rollups oder Parachains abzusichern.

Ökosystem und Anwendungsfälle

Polkadot unterstützt ein wachsendes Ökosystem spezialisierter Parachains und dApps.  Im Mai 2025 zählte das Netzwerk laut einer Pressemitteilung der Web3 Foundation über 600 aktive Projekte und mehr als 1,4 Millionen Teilnehmer in seinen On-Chain-DAOs. Parachains decken Bereiche wie DeFi (Hydration, Bifrost, Moonwell), Gaming (Mythical Games, Unique Network), NFTs, Identität und reales Asset-Tracking ab.

Das Cross-Chain-Design ermöglicht Parachains die Verbindung zu EVM-Ketten über Brücken sowie zu Cosmos über Hyperbridge und IBC-Implementierungen. Außerdem können Parachains ihre eigenen Rollups starten.

Vor- und Nachteile

Vorteile:

  • Parachains können unabhängig skalieren und sich ein Sicherheitsnetz teilen; mit dem kommenden „Elastic Scaling“ wird eine dynamische Ressourcenzuteilung möglich.

  • Brücken zu Ethereum und Cosmos sowie No-Code-Rollups ermöglichen Cross-Chain-dApps.

  • DOT-Inhaber kontrollieren Protokoll-Upgrades und Treasury-Ausgaben.

Nachteile:

  • Polkadots Architektur (Relay Chain, Parachains, zukünftige Cores) ist komplexer als die von Single-Chain-Netzwerken.

  • Obwohl es Projekte zu Hunderten gibt, bleiben die DeFi-Liquidity und der Total Value Locked von Polkadot im Vergleich zu Ethereum oder Solana gering.  Viele große Stablecoins (USDT, USDC) werden nicht nativ auf Polkadot ausgegeben, was die Kapitaleffizienz einschränkt.

  • Andere modulare Netzwerke (Cosmos, ICP) und Ethereums Layer-2-Rollups bieten eine ähnliche Skalierbarkeit und Interoperabilität, sodass Polkadot um Entwickler und Liquidität konkurrieren muss.

Strategische Überlegungen

Polkadot positioniert sich als anwendungszentrierte Layer-0, die eine sichere, skalierbare Infrastruktur für eine Vielzahl von Blockchains bereitstellt.  Letztlich sollten wir Polkadot nicht als Verbraucher-Blockchain, sondern eher als B2B(Business-to-Business)-Blockchain verstehen. Für Investoren und Entwickler bietet DOT Zugang zu einer modularen Multichain-Plattform.  Es ergänzt Bitcoin und Ethereum, anstatt direkt mit ihnen zu konkurrieren: Bitcoin bleibt ein monetärer Vermögenswert, Ethereum eine zentrale Anlaufstelle für Smart Contracts mit ausgereiftem DeFi, während Polkadot anpassbaren Blockspace und kettenübergreifende Kommunikation bereitstellt.  DOTs inflationäre Mittel finanzieren Staking-Belohnungen und ein Treasury, das in Netzwerk-Upgrades investiert. Zukünftige Investoren sollten das Potenzial von Polkadot 2.0 und das Wachstum seines Ökosystems abwägen.
