Kryptovärldens terminologi är komplex. Från förkortningar (DeFi) till akronymer (HODL) och helt nya begrepp (tokenomics och yield farming) – det tar tid att sätta sig in i allt. Två av de enklare termerna är mynt och tokens, men även kryptogemenskapen bidrar till förvirringen genom att använda dem omväxlande.
Det enklaste sättet att skilja mellan mynt och tokens är hur de uppstår: blockkedjor på ”lager 1” (L1) som Bitcoin och Ethereum emitterar mynt, medan tokens härrör från projekt som byggs ovanpå dessa blockkedjor. Skillnaderna sträcker sig dock bortom ursprunget.

Vad kännetecknar mynt?

Mynt fungerar som valutor i sina respektive nätverk, vilket innebär att de används som betalningsmedel. Bitcoin (BTC), den ursprungliga kryptovalutan, är det perfekta exemplet: dess pseudonyma grundare Satoshi Nakamoto utformade BTC som ett ”peer-to-peer electronic cash system”, avsett att användas för betalning av tjänster och för att ekonomiskt belöna nätverkets validerare (miners).

Även om många investerare betraktar Bitcoin som ”digitalt guld” på grund av dess knapphet (Satoshi begränsade utbudet till 21 miljoner), är dess primära användningsområde fortfarande en digital valuta. Det är den ekonomiska pelaren i sitt ekosystem, eftersom mynt också används för att betala ett nätverks transaktionsavgifter.

Blockkedjevaliderare – oavsett om det handlar om miners (för Bitcoin, Litecoin eller andra proof-of-work-nätverk) eller stakers (för Ethereum, Solana, Polkadot, Tezos och Hyperliquid) – belönas för sitt arbete genom transaktionsavgifter. Varje transaktion som involverar ett smart kontrakt på programmerbara blockkedjor medför en avgift som användarna måste betala i blockkedjans inhemska mynt.

Några av de största mynten sett till marknadsvärde, såsom Ripples XRP och Trons TRX, används också som valutor i sina respektive blockkedjor.

Hur är det med tokens?

Tokens har ett bredare spektrum av funktioner än mynt. De programmeras med hjälp av ”standarder”, i praktiken uppsättningar av instruktioner som är specifika för varje blockkedja. Den mest använda standarden är Ethereums ERC-20, som gör tokens kompatibla med projekt och plånböcker som körs på dess nätverk.

Enligt blockkedjescannern Etherscan finns det över 1,7 miljoner ERC-20-tokens (inklusive utility tokens och stablecoins). En annan standard, ERC-721, banade väg för icke-fungibla tokens (NFT:er), som representerar digitalt ägande av ett specifikt objekt, till exempel ett konstverk. Konstnären Beeple auktionerade i mars 2021 ut en NFT av Everydays: The First 5000 Days för 69 miljoner dollar.

Även sättet att emittera tokens skiljer sig. De flesta aktörer (stiftelser, företag, startups, privatpersoner) prägl ar hela utbudet på en gång och bestämmer sedan hur det ska distribueras, till exempel mellan grundare, investerare och tidiga användare. Projekt använder ofta denna process för att resa kapital genom kryptoversionen av en börsintroduktion. Vissa tokens, såsom stablecoins, präglas dock vid behov, medan andra är inflationära (deras utbud växer över tid beroende på aktivitet).

Typer av tokens

Här är några exempel på tokens som visar hur mångsidig denna kategori är:

  • Utility tokens: digitala tillgångar som är utformade för att ge tillgång till en produkt, tjänst eller funktion inom en specifik blockkedjeapplikation. I praktiken är en utility token till för att användas, inte för att ge rättigheter. Ett exempel är LINK, den inhemska tokenen i Chainlink – ett orakelnätverk som kopplar samman blockkedjor med den verkliga världen. Orakler samlar in och verifierar data och matar sedan in dem i smarta kontrakt så att dessa kan genomföra transaktioner, till exempel genom att bekräfta utfallet av en händelse så att en prediktionsmarknad kan reglera ett vad. LINK används för att betala för orakeltjänster, belöna dataleverantörer, delta i projektets styrning och för staking.

  • Stablecoins är kryptotillgångar som är knutna till värdet av en annan tillgång, oftast en fiatvaluta som den amerikanska dollarn. De är en av blockkedjeteknikens tidigaste ”killer apps” eftersom de kombinerar stabilitet med kryptons snabbhet och låga kostnader – till exempel för effektivare gränsöverskridande betalningar och sparprodukter för invånare i utvecklingsländer. Det råder viss oenighet om hur stablecoins ska kategoriseras, men eftersom majoriteten emitteras av projekt som byggs på L1-blockkedjor (som Solana) klassificerar vi dem som tokens.

  • Tokeniserade verkliga tillgångar (Real World Assets, RWA): digitala tokens som representerar verkliga tillgångar, främst investeringar såsom värdepapper (obligationer, aktier) eller råvaror (guld). Standarder som ERC-3643 har möjliggjort tokenisering genom att låta emittenter programmera tokens så att de följer samma regler som gäller vid investeringar i traditionella tillgångar.

Hur påverkar reglering dessa definitioner?

Om du hoppas att globala kryptoregleringar ska ge tydlighet, bör du förbereda dig på att bli besviken – och ibland frustrerad. Snarare tvärtom: mängden termer och bristen på konsekvens bidrar till förvirringen.

  • Europeiska unionen (MiCA): EU:s förordning Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA), ett av få exempel på ett skräddarsytt ramverk, klassificerar kryptotillgångar i tre kategorier, var och en med egna rättsliga krav. Den definierar e-pengatokens som knutna till en enda fiatvaluta, medan tillgångsrefererade tokens kan vara knutna till flera typer av säkerheter, såsom valutor, råvaror eller krypto. Allt annat hamnar i kategorin ”övriga kryptotillgångar”.

  • Förenade kungariket (FCA): Storbritanniens Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) klassificerar för närvarande mynt och tokens som ”cryptoassets”. Myndigheten har dock föreslagit ändringar i Financial Services and Markets Act för att skapa tre nya kategorier: ”qualifying cryptoassets”, ett paraplybegrepp som täcker majoriteten av kryptotillgångar; ”qualifying stablecoins”; samt ”specified investment cryptoassets”, som verkar ha skapats specifikt för att klassificera tokeniserade RWA:er.

  • USA: USA har haft ett mer ad hoc-betonat förhållningssätt till kryptoreglering. Commodity Futures Trading Commission klassificerar BTC och ETH som råvaror (tillsammans med LTC, ett annat mynt), medan Securities and Exchange Commission – fram till relativt nyligen – stämde ledande börser som Coinbase och Binance för att ha möjliggjort handel med mynt och tokens som man ansåg borde klassificeras som värdepapper. Samtidigt godkände amerikanska lagstiftare GENIUS Act, ett regelverk för stablecoins, sommaren 2025.

Slutsats

Det huvudsakliga sättet att skilja mellan mynt och tokens är deras användningsområde och hur de emitteras. Klassificeringen av mynt lär förbli oförändrad, medan klassificeringen av tokens kan komma att utökas avsevärt i takt med att tokeniseringen av verkliga tillgångar och instrument ökar. Även om det kan vara bekvämt att använda ett enda ord för att beskriva dessa tillgångar är det viktigt att förstå att de fyller många olika funktioner och inte är likadana.

Att förstå dessa skillnader hjälper dig att förstå vad du investerar i och säkerställer att du fattar välgrundade beslut när du bygger din krypt portfölj.
