C'è una lettura di questo mercato che interpreta l'attuale ondata di chiusure come un verdetto sulla tecnologia stessa. BitMEX1, la piattaforma che ha inventato il contratto perpetuo su cripto, chiuderà il 23 settembre dopo undici anni di attività. BitMart l'ha seguita nel giro di pochi giorni, annunciando la propria liquidazione per gennaio. Movement Labs e Storj hanno presentato istanza di Chapter 11 nella stessa settimana. Se la Sua tesi era che le cripto avrebbero sostituito il sistema finanziario, i fatti recenti sembrano la prova che ha fallito. La nostra tesi non è mai stata che le cripto avrebbero sostituito la finanza. Era che la blockchain avrebbe sostituito l'infrastruttura della finanza. Quello a cui stiamo assistendo non è un crollo. È una selezione.

Le condutture non sono mai state così piene

Guardiamo a che cosa scorre davvero in quelle condutture. Pochi giorni fa Hyperliquid, una delle maggiori piattaforme decentralizzate di derivati al mondo, ha generato per la prima volta più volumi dagli asset del mondo reale che dalle cripto: il 54% del totale, circa 26 miliardi di dollari fra azioni, indici e materie prime, superando i volumi complessivi dei contratti perpetui su cripto di ogni altro exchange decentralizzato. Da giugno le azioni singole sono diventate la principale categoria di asset del mondo reale sulla piattaforma e rappresentano oggi il 61% di quel volume, trainate non da un token ma da SK Hynix, il produttore coreano di semiconduttori. L'infrastruttura di mercato cripto-nativa di maggior successo ricava ormai la maggior parte della propria operatività da asset finanziari tradizionali. L'infrastruttura ha vinto. Le cripto, sulla propria infrastruttura, sono diventate l'utente di minoranza. La stessa convergenza è in atto anche nella direzione opposta.

CME Group e Cboe continuano ad ampliare la propria gamma di prodotti cripto, mentre le piattaforme cripto quotano sempre più contratti su azioni, ETF e materie prime, via via che gli investitori si spostano verso mercati con orari più lunghi e, in prospettiva, aperti 24 ore su 24. Quest'ultimo punto imporrà qualche riorganizzazione nei team operativi, abituati da sempre a lasciare l'ufficio nel minuto esatto in cui chiude il mercato.

La piattaforma Kinexys di JPMorgan ha elaborato oltre 4.000 miliardi di dollari di transazioni dal lancio e movimenta oggi in media più di 7 miliardi di dollari al giorno su otto valute. Il fondo tokenizzato del Tesoro di BlackRock ha superato i 2,5 miliardi di dollari di masse, opera su otto blockchain e quest'anno è diventato negoziabile su Uniswap, oltre a essere accettato come collaterale su Binance. Le maggiori banche statunitensi stanno costruendo una rete condivisa di depositi tokenizzati attraverso The Clearing House. Nessuna di queste istituzioni sta comprando l'ideologia. Tutte stanno comprando le condutture.

Che cosa sta davvero premiando la scrematura

Perché allora così tante società cripto-native stanno chiudendo? La risposta ha sorprendentemente poco a che fare con la blockchain.

La prima ragione è l'assenza di un fossato difensivo duraturo.

Una piattaforma di contratti perpetui, un servizio di monitoraggio dei portafogli o un aggregatore di DEX erano imprese il cui principale vantaggio competitivo consisteva semplicemente nell'essere arrivate prima. Ha funzionato finché gli operatori consolidati erano assenti. Nel momento in cui sono entrate sul mercato istituzioni con distribuzione globale, marchi affidabili, bilanci vigilati e relazioni con la clientela lunghe decenni, «arrivare per primi» ha smesso di bastare.

Hyperliquid non è l'eccezione che smentisce la regola: è la regola che si manifesta due volte.

Le imprese che sopravvivono non sono più società cripto. Sono società di infrastruttura che si trovano a regolare transazioni con tecnologia blockchain e sono in larga parte indifferenti all'asset che scorre nella rete. Quelle che sono scomparse erano servizi. E i servizi vengono assorbiti.

La seconda ragione è la regolamentazione. Più precisamente, la compliance.

La compliance è un fossato. L'unica domanda è chi lo possiede già.

Quando il periodo transitorio di MiCA si è concluso il 1° luglio, migliaia di operatori privi di licenza sono stati obbligati per legge a cessare il servizio ai clienti europei. Gli addetti ai lavori hanno parlato di un'ecatombe, potenzialmente capace di colpire milioni di utenti. È esattamente ciò che la regolamentazione ha sempre fatto. Alza il costo fisso della partecipazione fino a un livello che solo le istituzioni già concepite per operare dentro quel perimetro possono assorbire senza affanno. Le istituzioni finanziarie tradizionali hanno passato buona parte di un secolo a imparare a convivere con la complessità normativa. Gran parte dell'industria cripto no, e molti operatori non ne avranno mai l'occasione.

Gli Stati Uniti stanno ora passando attraverso lo stesso setaccio.

Il dibattito attorno al Clarity Act riguarda ormai meno la questione se gli asset digitali debbano stare dentro il sistema finanziario regolamentato, e più il modo in cui andranno gestiti i conflitti d'interesse una volta che ci saranno entrati.

Quando quella normativa vedrà finalmente la luce, è probabile che faccia negli Stati Uniti ciò che MiCA sta già facendo in Europa: fissare regole operative chiare per le istituzioni regolamentate e alzare sensibilmente le barriere all'ingresso per tutti gli altri.

Perché questo esito era inevitabile

Forse nulla di tutto questo dovrebbe sorprenderci. L'infrastruttura finanziaria ha sempre premiato scala, fiducia, regolamentazione e distribuzione. Sono effetti di rete potenti, che la tecnologia da sola raramente rovescia. La blockchain cambia l'impianto tecnologico. Migliora nettamente il regolamento delle transazioni, la trasparenza e la programmabilità. Non elimina l'importanza dei bilanci, delle licenze regolamentari, della fiducia dei clienti o della distribuzione globale. Semmai accresce il valore delle istituzioni capaci di combinare quei vantaggi con un'infrastruttura migliore. Ecco perché è improbabile che i vincitori nel lungo periodo siano quelli con il protocollo blockchain più elegante. Saranno quelli capaci di integrare l'infrastruttura blockchain nella finanza istituzionale.

Chi mangia chi?

Per buona parte dell'ultimo decennio la narrazione dominante lasciava intendere che le cripto si sarebbero mangiate la finanza. Le evidenze puntano sempre più nella direzione opposta.

La finanza tradizionale sta assorbendo l'infrastruttura di regolamento della blockchain, la sua struttura di mercato sempre attiva e la programmabilità degli asset, lasciandosi alle spalle gran parte dell'ideologia che in origine le accompagnava.

È una sconfitta per la blockchain? Solo se si dava per scontato che la tecnologia e l'industria costruita attorno a essa fossero la stessa cosa. Non lo sono mai state.

A una blockchain non importa se regola Bitcoin, un Buono del Tesoro tokenizzato o un'azione SK Hynix. Le condutture vengono ricostruite, senza clamore, da molte delle stesse istituzioni che i primi sostenitori delle cripto pensavano di sostituire. Era da sempre l'esito più probabile.

E per chi ha guardato alla blockchain non come a un'insurrezione contro la finanza, ma come alla generazione successiva dell'infrastruttura finanziaria, è anche il più prezioso.

I vincitori non saranno quelli che hanno provato a sostituire Wall Street. Saranno quelli che, senza clamore, ne hanno ricostruito le condutture.
