BNB ha vissuto un anno eccezionale nel 2025, raggiungendo un nuovo massimo storico di quasi 1.370 dollari il 13 ottobre. Il token creato da Binance si colloca ora saldamente tra le prime cinque criptovalute, subito dietro Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT e XRP.

Questa crescita è notevole per un asset lanciato poco più di otto anni fa, quando durante l’ICO del 2017 era possibile acquistare un BNB a soli 15 centesimi.

Fin dall’inizio, BNB ha svolto molteplici funzioni. È stato inizialmente introdotto come utility token per l’exchange Binance, consentendo agli utenti di pagare le commissioni di negoziazione a tariffa scontata.

Nel tempo, il suo ruolo si è ampliato diventando il token nativo dell’ecosistema BNB Chain, alimentando transazioni, gas fee e operazioni on-chain. BNB consente inoltre l’accesso a funzionalità come Launchpad e Launchpool, rafforzando la sua posizione come asset centrale all’interno dell’infrastruttura più ampia di Binance.

Come tutto è iniziato: Binance, l’architettura, l’ecosistema

BNB è nato durante la prima grande fase di adozione globale delle criptovalute, all’inizio del trend al rialzo del 2017 che portò Bitcoin oltre i 10.000 dollari per la prima volta. L’ICO fu lanciata su Ethereum nel luglio 2017, pochi mesi prima dell’apertura dell’exchange Binance da parte di Changpeng Zhao e Yi He. 

La rapida ascesa di Binance, che è diventato il più grande exchange di criptovalute al mondo in soli 180 giorni, ha dato a BNB immediata esposizione e utilità. In quel momento la piattaforma comprendeva solo cinque token: BTC, ETH, LTC, NEO e BNB.

Binance ha contribuito a far decollare l’ecosistema adattando i principali elementi fondamentali della DeFi di Ethereum, con PancakeSwap che è emerso come alternativa nativa di BNB Chain a Uniswap. Questi primi protocolli hanno rapidamente attratto milioni di utenti grazie a commissioni significativamente più basse e a esecuzioni più rapide rispetto a Ethereum durante il ciclo a traffico elevato 2020-2021.

Dopo il lancio della mainnet il 18 aprile 2019, BNB è migrato nel 2020 dalla rete Ethereum a quella che oggi è BNB Chain. Secondo DefiLlama, BNB Chain è diventato il secondo maggiore ecosistema Layer-1 dopo Ethereum per volume di scambi sugli exchange decentralizzati e il terzo per utenti attivi giornalieri.

Il 15 febbraio 2022, Binance Chain e BSC sono stati ufficialmente unificati sotto il marchio BNB Chain. Il nome “BNB” riflette il principio guida dell’ecosistema (“Build and Build”), sottolineando l’attenzione all’innovazione continua e allo sviluppo guidato dalla comunità.

BNB Chain opera su un’architettura a doppia catena: BNB Beacon Chain gestisce governance e consenso, mentre BNB Smart Chain gestisce smart contract e applicazioni decentralizzate.

Il più ampio ecosistema include anche opBNB (soluzione Layer-2 di rollup), zkBNB (rollup a conoscenza zero) e BNB Greenfield, una rete decentralizzata di archiviazione di dati progettata per supportare la gestione dei dati nativi del Web3.

La tokenomics di BNB

Al momento del lancio sono stati coniati 200 milioni di BNB, di cui 100 milioni venduti durante l’ICO. La restante offerta è stata distribuita tra il team di Binance, gli sviluppatori dell’ecosistema e i primi contributori.

BNB si distingue per il suo modello economico deflazionistico, inizialmente basato su un programma trimestrale di buyback-and-burn (“riacquisto e combustione”), finanziato da una parte dei ricavi di Binance. Questo approccio riduceva progressivamente l’offerta in circolazione mediante il riacquisto di BNB sul mercato e la distruzione permanente dei token.

Nel 2021 il sistema è passato a BNB Auto-Burn, un meccanismo completamente automatizzato e trasparente basato su una formula on-chain che determina il numero di token da bruciare ogni trimestre utilizzando due variabili: il prezzo medio di mercato di BNB e il numero totale di blocchi prodotti sulla BNB Smart Chain, che funge da indicatore dell’attività della rete. In media, circa due milioni di BNB vengono rimossi dalla circolazione ogni trimestre, anche se l’importo effettivo varia in base alle condizioni di mercato.

Parallelamente, il Real-Time Burn (BEP-95) distrugge permanentemente una parte delle gas fee di ogni transazione. Con l’aumento dell’attività della rete, vengono bruciati più BNB, rafforzando così il legame diretto tra utilizzo e scarsità del token.

L’obiettivo a lungo termine è limitare l’offerta totale a 100 milioni di BNB. Al 26 novembre 2025, erano già stati bruciati più di 64 milioni di BNB.

L’ambiente della BNB Chain

L’ecosistema di BNB Chain si è evoluto in uno degli ambienti più attivi e diversificati dell’industria delle criptovalute, spaziando dalla finanza decentralizzata (DeFi) al gaming, dalle applicazioni social ai servizi infrastrutturali e alle piattaforme di asset reali.

Un pilastro importante di questo ecosistema è il layer delle stablecoin. Sebbene in passato BUSD svolgesse un ruolo centrale, la pressione normativa del 2023 ha bloccato le nuove emissioni, causando un forte calo della sua offerta. La liquidity si è quindi spostata verso USDT e USDC.

BNB Chain ha ospitato anche uno dei progetti di maggior successo dell’anno, Aster, un exchange decentralizzato (DEX), supportato da YZi Labs, entità legata al cofondatore di Binance Changpeng Zhao, che ha registrato una rapida crescita, aumentando significativamente l’attività on-chain e portando i volumi a livelli che non si vedevano dal ciclo del 2021.

Al tempo stesso, nuovi settori stanno rafforzando l’ecosistema BNB Chain. La rete opBNB Layer-2 riduce significativamente i costi di transazione e supporta casi d’uso a throughput elevato come gaming e applicazioni social, mentre BNB Greenfield offre archiviazione decentralizzata pensata per piattaforme Web3 ad alto consumo di dati.

Anche le tendenze macro-istituzionali stanno alimentando questo slancio. È aumentata la speculazione su un potenziale BNB ETF spot negli USA, e abbiamo assistito alla creazione delle prime tesorerie in BNB, come Seascape e Jiuzi Holdings. Anche il veicolo di criptovalute nazionale del Kazakistan, Alem Crypto Fund, ha fatto del BNB la sua prima acquisizione ufficiale.

Più di recente, BlackRock ha annunciato l’estensione del suo fondo di tesoreria tokenizzato da 2,5 miliardi di dollari, BUIDL, alla BNB Chain, mentre Binance ora accetta BUIDL come garanzia off-exchange. Questa integrazione offre ai trader istituzionali nuovi strumenti per migliorare l’efficienza del capitale all’interno dell’ecosistema Binance.

Prospettive e rischi

Il principale punto debole di BNB è il grado di centralizzazione del suo gruppo di validatori, pari a circa 26, una quantità ridotta rispetto a reti più decentralizzate come Ethereum.

Un altro rischio significativo riguarda la percezione che BNB rimanga strettamente legato a Binance. Se l’exchange dovesse affrontare problemi operativi o normativi (come evidenziato dalle recenti accuse di facilitare transazioni illecite), il token potrebbe accusarne direttamente il colpo.

Binance ha sempre affermato che BNB Chain opera in modo indipendente, nonostante il coinvolgimento iniziale dell’exchange e gli investimenti continui nell’ecosistema. Col tempo, l’azienda ha gradualmente rimosso il proprio branding dalla rete per sottolineare l’impegno volto alla decentralizzazione e alla separazione normativa.

L’obiettivo dichiarato a lungo termine è favorire un ecosistema autonomo, guidato dalla comunità, e non controllato da una singola entità.
