Bitcoin ha raggiunto un nuovo massimo storico a novembre 2024 dopo la vittoria alle elezioni presidenziali statunitensi di Donald Trump, comunemente considerato il candidato pro-criptovalute. Più i media parlano di questi rialzi, maggiore è la richiesta di Bitcoin, nonostante alcuni investitori si chiedano se non sia troppo tardi per entrare in questo mercato e beneficiare dei rendimenti e della diversificazione che offre.

Questo articolo analizza le previsioni di prezzo di Bitcoin sul medio e lungo termine fatte da professionisti della finanza, per poi esplorare le varie opzioni a disposizione degli investitori per ottenere esposizione e i motivi per cui dovrebbero valutare anche l’acquisto di altcoin.

L’eterno dilemma: è troppo tardi per investire in Bitcoin?

Da quando Satoshi Nakamoto ha estratto il primo blocco di transazioni, all’inizio del 2009, Bitcoin ha sperimentato diversi rialzi eclatanti (per non parlare dei crolli). Sebbene delinearne la traiettoria futura sia alquanto difficile a causa dei tanti fattori che entrano in gioco, le previsioni formulate dagli investitori professionisti fanno pensare che ci sia ancora margine di crescita. La società di ricerche Bernstein prevede che Bitcoin raggiunga 150.000 $ nel 2025, grazie ai flussi di capitale negli exchange-traded funds (ETF) spot approvati dalla Securities and Exchange Commission agli inizi del 2024. La banca britannica Standard Chartered crede che la natura ciclica (schemi ricorrenti) del mercato possa spingere Bitcoin fino a 250.000 $ entro la fine del 2025. Le stime più ottimistiche sono di Cathie Wood, fondatrice di Ark Investments, secondo cui Bitcoin potrebbe arrivare a valere 3,8 milioni di dollari entro il 2030 grazie all’adozione e alla richiesta di ETF spot da parte delle istituzioni. Per essere obiettivi, va ricordato che per JP Morgan il valore reale di Bitcoin è di 45.000 $. Tuttavia Anthony Scaramucci di Skybridge Capital, gestore di asset alternativi che ha previsto che Bitcoin avrebbe raggiunto i 100.000 $ nel 2024, pensa che il colosso di Wall Street cambierà idea con l’evolversi del quadro normativo.  

Tornando alla tesi di StanChart, CoinShares ha già parlato di come le caratteristiche uniche di Bitcoin abbiano portato a questa ciclicità di prezzo. Più o meno ogni quattro anni, ad esempio, le ricompense di blocco pagate ai miner crollavano del 50%, eventi che la community crypto definisce “halving”. Fino a quando la domanda sarà costante, la conseguente diminuzione dell’offerta dovrebbe portare a un aumento del prezzo di Bitcoin. Il grafico in basso mostra questo effetto in azione, sottolineando come sia più evidente nei mesi precedenti e successivi agli halving. 

Questo modello tende ad attrarre l’attenzione degli investitori che mirano al rendimento e alla diversificazione del portafoglio, facendo schizzare, teoricamente, i prezzi ancora più in alto.

Qual è il momento migliore per investire? Anticipando il mercato o con un PAC? 

Quando aggiungono una nuova attività nel proprio portafoglio, gli investitori hanno a disposizione due possibilità. Un investimento in un’unica soluzione, se fatto al momento giusto, offre guadagni potenzialmente considerevoli, ma può anche trasformarsi in una montagna russa emotiva, soprattutto per gli asset come Bitcoin caratterizzati da forti fluttuazioni (volatilità). L’alternativa è immettere gradualmente capitale nel mercato, strategia nota come piano d’accumulo del capitale (PAC).

Con un PAC l’investimento in un asset o prodotto, come ad esempio un crypto exchange-traded product (ETP), viene effettuato a cadenza regolare, indipendentemente dalla direzione verso cui va il mercato. Il volume di scambi può equivalere a un valore o una quantità fissi, mentre gli intervalli di investimento sono generalmente mensili. La teoria alla base del PAC è che gli investitori sono disposti ad acquistare più asset quando il prezzo è basso e viceversa, cosa che dovrebbe ridurre il costo medio per unità. Il PAC, inoltre, elimina l’aspetto emotivo dalle decisioni in fase ribassista, poiché la tentazione di vendere un asset si affievolisce. I crolli, tra l’altro, potrebbero offrire l’opportunità di acquistare asset a prezzi considerevolmente minori. Naturalmente, questo approccio presenta anche svantaggi che gli investitori devono prendere in considerazione. Detenere liquidità in un mercato rialzista significa lasciarsi sfuggire delle opportunità di rendimento, mentre le numerose commissioni di negoziazione rendono i PAC più dispendiosi rispetto agli investimenti in un’unica soluzione.

Come inserire Bitcoin all’interno di un portafoglio bilanciato?

La volatilità di Bitcoin richiede agli investitori un’attenta valutazione della quantità detenuta. Secondo una ricerca condotta da CoinShares, l’ideale sarebbe un’allocazione relativamente piccola, come dimostrato dall’impatto sul rendimento osservato fra diversi modelli di portafoglio, comprese le strategie messe a punto dai principali investitori professionisti al mondo. Come si evince dalla tabella in basso, un’allocazione in Bitcoin fra il 4% e il 7% porterebbe a una crescita considerevole dei rendimenti annui di ciascun portafoglio, con un impatto limitato sul drawdown massimo (la perdita massima rispetto al valore più alto raggiunto) e sulla volatilità. La detenzione di Bitcoin migliora anche la diversificazione del portafoglio, come dimostrato dal coefficiente di correlazione, un indicatore che misura il grado di movimento verso la stessa direzione di asset diversi.

Molte altcoin rallentano Bitcoin: è il momento di diversificare? 

Fermo restando che Bitcoin è la criptovaluta di gran lunga più importante, con una capitalizzazione complessiva di mercato pari al 59% (al 22 novembre 2024), anche le altcoin possono offrire diversificazione di portafoglio. Tuttavia, non tutte le altcoin sono uguali. Secondo CoinMarketCap, l’universo delle criptovalute è composto da oltre diecimila monete. Alcune, come Ethereum e Solana, nascono da progetti legittimi e hanno superato la prova del tempo, mentre altre sono di poca utilità o valore. Una ricerca dimostra che, fra il 2013 e il 2022, quasi 2.300 monete sono diventate obsolete, principalmente a causa degli scarsi volumi di scambio, ma anche per via delle truffe. 

Conclusioni

Vista la forza dell’ultimo rally, gli investitori potrebbero domandarsi se non sia troppo tardi per esporsi a Bitcoin. Nonostante le previsioni non siano una scienza esatta per via dei tanti fattori che possono influenzare il mercato, diversi analisti ritengono che vi sia ancora margine di crescita.

Un investimento in un’unica soluzione potrebbe tradursi in rendimenti allettanti, ma rivelarsi estenuante dal punto di vista emotivo; in tal caso sarebbe meglio approcciarsi al mercato mediante un piano di accumulo del capitale, con investimenti scaglionati eseguiti indipendentemente dalle condizioni del mercato.

Un’allocazione in Bitcoin fra il 4% e il 7% potrebbe diversificare il portafoglio e far crescere i rendimenti, con un impatto limitato sulla volatilità. Tuttavia, l’universo delle criptovalute è talmente vasto che gli investitori potrebbero prendere in considerazione una diversificazione con le altcoin.
