Ethereum, la blockchain dai mille strati

L’obiettivo iniziale di Ethereum di diventare un “computer mondiale” si è evoluto a causa delle limitazioni legate al trilemma della blockchain, un concetto formulato dal suo fondatore Vitalik Buterin, che implica che i protocolli non possono combinare scalabilità, sicurezza e decentralizzazione. Al contrario, bisogna raggiungere un compromesso, ossia è necessario dare la priorità a due di queste caratteristiche.

I Layer-2 (L2) sono una delle soluzioni sviluppate per risolvere il trilemma. Questo articolo spiega come i Layer-2 scalano Ethereum, pioniere della funzionalità blockchain e il secondo protocollo per capitalizzazione di mercato, e quale impatto potrebbero avere sul suo futuro.

 

Uno sguardo indietro alla storia e all’architettura di Ethereum

Ethereum è stato introdotto in un libro bianco pubblicato da Vitalik Buterin, che all’epoca era un nuovo arrivato, ma che da allora è diventato una delle voci più rispettate nell’ambiente delle criptovalute. Mentre la blockchain di Bitcoin è stata progettata per elaborare le transazioni, Vitalik ha delineato la visione di un protocollo che apporta maggiori funzionalità alla tecnologia mediante l’uso di contratti intelligenti, ossia programmi che vengono eseguiti automaticamente nei casi in cui determinate condizioni preliminari sono soddisfatte.

La macchina virtuale di Ethereum (EVM) è il motore che esegue i contratti intelligenti e aggiorna i registri, come il saldo dei portafogli. Funziona grazie al supporto di migliaia di computer, noti come nodi, che eseguono il software e contribuiscono a proteggere la rete. Altri protocolli come Binance Smart Chain e Avalanche incorporano la EVM per sfruttare le sue funzionalità e attingere dal suo ecosistema di sviluppatori e utenti.

Ethereum ha lanciato un’offerta iniziale di monete (ICO), la versione per le criptovalute di un’offerta pubblica, tra luglio e settembre 2014. L’ICO raccolse oltre 18 milioni di dollari mediante la vendita di Ether, il token nativo di questo protocollo. La blockchain è stata lanciata a luglio 2015, affidandosi inizialmente allo stesso meccanismo di consenso “proof of work” utilizzato da Bitcoin prima di iniziare la transizione verso il suo meccanismo “proof of stake” attuale, a settembre 2022, un evento conosciuto nella comunità cripto come il Merge. 

Il protocollo applica delle commissioni, chiamate commissioni gas, per tutte le operazioni, dai semplici trasferimenti tra due portafoglio, alle transazioni più complesse che richiedono contratti intelligenti, come il mining di liquidità delle app di finanza decentralizzata (DeFi). Gli utenti pagano queste commissioni in Ether, anche se vengono generalmente misurate in gwei, la denominazione più piccola. I validatori, che hanno la responsabilità di processare le transazioni nel meccanismo di consenso proof of stake, ricevono una quota di queste commissioni.

L’importo delle commissioni gas dipende da domanda e offerta. Se il protocollo soffre una congestione a causa dell’alto livello di traffico, il prezzo delle commissioni può subire un’impennata, com’è successo di recente a settembre 2024. Una frenetica attività on-chain dal 16 al 26, senza un’apparente causa, ha aumentato le commissioni gas di quasi il 500%, come riportato dalla piattaforma di informazioni su cripto Cointelegraph

 

La nascita dei Layer-2

I Layer-2, o L2, sono delle reti costruite sopra una blockchain, la quale prende il nome di layer base o Layer-1, per aumentarne le capacità. Questi sfruttano la sicurezza della base, la quale verifica i dati delle transazione per conto dell’L2, ad esempio quelli del saldo del mittente. Nel caso di Ethereum, la scalabilità era la sfida maggiore, e in questo modo gli L2 alleggeriscono il peso del processamento delle transazioni.

Gli L2 appaiono in due forme. Gli L2 con permessi sono capaci di restringere l’accesso ai soli utenti autorizzati e a specifiche attività. In genere vengono sviluppati per un’organizzazione o un ecosistema concreti e sono gestiti da una singola autorità. Per esempio, alcune compagnie come IBM o Fidelity stanno utilizzando Hyperledger Fabric per rendere più agili i loro servizi e per esplorare il terreno degli asset digitali. Gli L2 senza permessi, invece, sono usufruibili dal pubblico e generalmente decentralizzati.

Optimism è uno degli L2 più famosi costruito su Ethereum, con un valore totale bloccato (TVL) a dicembre 2024 di 8,5 miliardi di dollari, un indicatore impiegato per misurare l’ammontare dei fondi depositati dagli utenti in un’app DeFi. Funziona grazie a una tecnologia conosciuta come optimistic rollup in cui i sequenziatori, un ruolo simile ai validatori di Ethereum, processano lotti di transazioni sulla rete e li aggiungono a un singolo blocco, il quale viene inviato al layer base. Gli exchange cripto Coinbase e Kraken hanno lanciato di recente i propri L2, chiamati rispettivamente Base e Ink, due ambienti DeFi, usando lo stesso stack tecnologico di Optimism.

Tra gli altri L2 costruiti su Ethereum di ampio uso troviamo Arbitrum (TVL di 21 miliardi di dollari a dicembre 2024), anch’esso con optimistic rollup, e Starknet (TVL di 1,1 miliardi di dollari), che fa uso di rollup basati su protocolli a conoscenza zero, una tecnica di crittografia che semplifica la verifica delle transazioni, senza dover rivelare dati sensibili.

 

Uno sguardo al futuro

Quindi, qual è l’importanza degli L2 nel futuro di Ethereum? L’hard fork Dencun, un aggiornamento di rete reso effettivo a marzo 2024, è stato utile alla scalabilità di Ethereum con l’introduzione di un modo più economico di immagazzinare i dati delle transazioni. Tuttavia, è stato un successo quasi eccessivo, dato che ha permesso agli L2 di aumentare il volume di transazioni richiamate dalla base senza sostituire le commissioni gas. Per mettere la situazione in contesto, le commissioni sono cadute di oltre il 50% tra il primo e il secondo trimestre del 2024. Ciò ha visto CoinShares diminuire il target del prezzo di Ethereum in cinque anni da 8.219 a 1.541 dollari.

Ciononostante, il futuro di Ethereum è ancora luminoso. Secondo il Developer Report 2024 pubblicato dalla compagnia di fondi di capitale di rischio Electric Capital, si tratta dell’ecosistema di punta in termini di attività degli sviluppatori, un indicatore chiave sulla salute di un protocollo. Ethereum ha visto la quota maggiore in generale di sviluppatori e anche gli sviluppatori maggiormente attivi in tutte le regioni nel 2024. Si trova anche in seconda posizione per numero di nuovi sviluppatori che si sono uniti all’ecosistema.

Un’altra spinta per Ethereum proviene dall’uso della sua tecnologia da parte delle figure principali del settore finanziario per trasformare i fondi in token, ossia convertire le azioni in token emessi sulla blockchain. All’inizio di dicembre 2024, la banca britannica Standard Chartered ha annunciato la propria intenzione di offrire un fondo monetario sul dollaro americano su Ethereum attraverso Libeara, una piattaforma di tokenizzazione lanciata dalla stessa banca alla fine del 2023.

È bene anche ricordare che gli L2 hanno bisogno di un protocollo di base per raggiungere il successo. Anche se, sino a un certo punto, si tratta di cannibalizzazione del volume di transazioni, in tanti si affidano ancora alla sicurezza del meccanismo di consenso offerto da Ethereum.

Riassumendo

Ethereum è stato lanciato nel 2015 per apportare maggiori funzionalità alla tecnologia blockchain mediante i contratti intelligenti, che operano su un motore chiamato EVM. Questo protocollo applica delle commissioni gas per processare la transazioni, le quali variano in base al rapporto tra domanda e offerta.

Il trilemma della blockchain indica che i protocolli devono fare una scelta obbligata tra sicurezza, decentralizzazione e scalabilità. Gli L2 sono d’aiuto per risolvere il trilemma, in quanto potenziano la scalabilità di Ethereum alleggerendo il peso delle transazioni.

Anche se gli L2 sono in grado di ridurre le commissioni gas generate su Ethereum, il suo futuro appare brillante dato che è il protocollo con maggiore popolarità tra gli sviluppatori, i maggiori enti finanziari fanno uso della sua tecnologia e molti L2 si affidano alla sua sicurezza.
