Una guida ai prestiti in criptovalute

Mantenere a lungo termine i propri investimenti è considerata una strategia ragionevole, ma cosa succede se l’investitore in criptovalute ha bisogno, in maniera inaspettata, di accedere ai propri fondi? Ritirare il denaro dai mercati può essere una decisione sbagliata, specialmente in un periodo di bull market, e potrebbe anche avere conseguenze fiscali. In questo articolo esploreremo come i prestiti garantiti da criptovalute rappresentino una fonte di liquidity alternativa per gli investitori.

Prestiti DeFi

I protocolli di prestito della finanza decentralizzata (DeFi) semplificano i prestiti attraverso gli smart contract, dei programmi basati sulla tecnologia blockchain che vengono eseguiti automaticamente una volta soddisfatte determinate condizioni preliminari. Gli utenti depositano fondi all’interno di smart contract per creare una pool di prestito, a cui i mutuatari possono attingere una volta offerte delle garanzie. La garanzia deve essere sotto forma di criptovaluta, anch’essa vincolata in uno smart contract. In molti casi, i prestiti devono essere sovracollateralizzati, ossia coperti da garanzia di valore superiore all’importo preso in prestito.

Per determinare l’importo del prestito, il protocollo stabilisce un rapporto prestito/valore (Loan to Value, LTV), che esprime il prestito come percentuale della garanzia. Un LTV del 66% significa che un mutuatario deve offrire 150 $ di garanzia per ottenere 100 $ in criptovalute. Per monete di alta qualità, come bitcoin ed ether, l’LTV aumenta.

Il protocollo fissa i tassi di interesse sulla base di domanda e offerta, usando un algoritmo programmato all’interno di uno smart contract. Se la domanda di prestiti supera l’offerta, i tassi di interesse aumentano e viceversa. In alternativa, anche la comunità di governance di un prestatore può fissare il tasso.

Un importante vantaggio dei prestiti garantiti da criptovalute è che gli investitori possono ottenere liquidity senza dover vendere le proprie partecipazioni. Per esempio, i cosiddetti flash loan, un’innovazione DeFi, sono prestiti istantanei (emessi e rimborsati con un’unica transazione) e possono consentire ai mutuatari di beneficiare di opportunità di arbitrage, che comportano l’acquisto e la vendita dello stesso asset quando il suo prezzo è diverso su due mercati. 

Il rischio più grande per i mutuatari riguarda la volatilità delle criptovalute. Se il valore della loro garanzia scende sotto la soglia LTV, il protocollo potrebbe liquidare automaticamente il prestito, causando delle perdite. Allo stesso modo, potrebbero fare fatica a ripagare il prestito, se il valore del token preso in prestito aumenta.

Aave (33 miliardi di dollari a luglio 2025) è la più grande piattaforma DeFi di prestiti per  Total Value Locked, un indicatore che misura la quantità di fondi depositati in un protocollo dagli utenti.

Anche altri protocolli stanno guadagnando terreno, come Morpho, che consente i prestiti on-chain. Numerosi prodotti DeFi, e persino l’exchange centralizzato Coinbase, stanno utilizzando questo protocollo per le proprie offerte di prestito.

Prestiti CeFi

Sebbene i protocolli di prestito della finanza centralizzata (CeFi) funzionino generalmente come quelli della DeFi, ci sono alcune importanti differenze.

CeFi vs DeFi lendersUno dei principali vantaggi dei protocolli CeFi è la semplicità di utilizzo. A differenza delle interfacce DeFi, che richiedono il collegamento di un portafoglio digitale, i protocolli CeFi possono offrire un’esperienza simile a quella delle app di finanza tradizionale (TradFi). Sebbene la decentralizzazione sia un principio fondamentale della blockchain, questa familiarità potrebbe incoraggiarne l’adozione.

Tuttavia, i protocolli CeFi sono vulnerabili ai single point of failure. Celsius Network ha presentato istanza di fallimento a luglio 2022, dopo che il crollo della stablecoin di Terra e del suo token gemello Luna ha provocato un bear market e una corsa alla piattaforma. Un mutuatario, l’hedge fund cripto Three Arrows Capital, è risultato inadempiente per un prestito da 75 milioni di dollari.

Uno dei protocolli di prestito CeFi più conosciuti è Nexo, lanciato nel 2018. Nexo fissa i tassi di interesse sulla base di diversi  livelli di fedeltà: i membri platino possono ottenere prestiti al  2,9%, se mantengono il loro LTV sotto il 20%.

Prestiti TradFi  

I crediti Lombard, che devono il loro nome proprio alla regione italiana per la sua antica tradizione bancaria, permettono ai mutuatari di utilizzare il proprio portafoglio di investimenti, compresi gli Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF), come garanzia.

In genere i tassi di interesse dei crediti Lombard sono inferiori a quelli dei prestiti bancari tradizionali, perché la garanzia è molto liquida. I prestatori applicano solitamente il tasso di base della banca centrale più un margine, e il rapporto prestito/valore (LTV) gioca un ruolo cruciale nella definizione dei termini. Gli asset più volatili, come le azioni, richiedono un margine maggiore e comportano un LTV inferiore.

I rischi e benefici dei crediti Lombard rispecchiano fedelmente quelli dei prestiti DeFi e CeFi. Permettono agli individui con un patrimonio netto elevato di ottenere liquidity senza vendere i loro asset, ma se il valore della garanzia scende sotto il rapporto LTV concordato, il prestatore può emettere una chiamata a margine o procedere alla liquidazione della garanzia.

Molte istituzioni accettano già i cripto-asset come garanzia. Swissquote e Sygnum Bank in Svizzera, ad esempio, permettono ai propri clienti di usare le principali criptovalute, come bitcoin ed ether, come garanzia per ottenere linee di credito Lombard. Sygnum, in particolare, accetta come garanzia anche alcuni ETP ed ETF su cripto, colmando il divario tra gli asset digitali e la gestione patrimoniale tradizionale.

Nel frattempo, altre istituzioni tradizionali, quali State Street, stanno valutando il futuro utilizzo di strumenti finanziari tokenizzati, come obbligazioni basate su blockchain e fondi monetari, come parte della gamma di garanzie accettate.

Riassumendo

I prestiti garantiti da criptovalute offrono agli investitori una soluzione per ottenere liquidity senza vendere i propri asset digitali, che sia tramite un protocollo decentralizzato, una piattaforma centralizzata oppure un istituto finanziario tradizionale. Ciascun modello presenta una struttura, dei vantaggi e dei rischi specifici.

I prestiti DeFi offrono flessibilità e alcune funzionalità innovative, come i prestiti automatizzati e i flash loan; tuttavia, richiedono competenze tecniche maggiori e comportano rischi legati al fallimento dello smart contract e alla volatilità del mercato. Le piattaforme CeFi semplificano l’esperienza utente grazie alla loro somiglianza con le applicazioni della finanza tradizionale, ma introducono il rischio di controparte e si basano sulla fiducia nei confronti del fornitore di servizi. I crediti Lombard, offerti dalle banche tradizionali, estendono il concetto alle criptovalute, permettendo agli investitori di ottenere prestiti garantiti da asset digitali a tassi relativamente favorevoli, a patto che la garanzia mantenga il suo valore.

La scelta tra le diverse opzioni dipende generalmente dal profilo dell’investitore: la sua familiarità con la tecnologia, la tolleranza al rischio e l’importanza che dà a decentralizzazione, regolamentazione o praticità. Con l’evolversi del mercato, potrebbero emergere modelli più ibridi e gli attori istituzionali potrebbero avere un ruolo sempre più importante nel definire le pratiche di prestito relative agli asset digitali.
