Web3-landskapet har utvecklats i takt med att blockkedjor har stött på begränsningar som hindrar dem från att möta verkliga behov. Den tekniska infrastrukturen består nu av flera så kallade ”layers”, alltså protokoll som byggts ovanpå varandra för att hantera dessa begränsningar. Layer 2-lösningar ökar vanligtvis skalbarheten för Layer 1 som till exempel Ethereum, medan Layer 3 och 0 möjliggör större anpassning och underlättar kommunikationen mellan kedjor.

Den här artikeln utforskar de viktigaste komponenterna i varje layer för att ge kryptoinvesterare en bättre förståelse av hur de fungerar.

Layer 1

Layer 1-lösningar (L1) är grundläggande protokoll som utgör baslagret i blockkedjeekosystemet och ansvarar för de mest fundamentala funktionerna. De använder konsensusmekanismer för att validera och registrera transaktioner samt säkerställa protokollets säkerhet genom att skydda mot så kallade 51 %-attacker, som skulle kunna göra det möjligt för en angripare att ta kontroll över nätverket och manipulera transaktioner. De vanligaste mekanismerna är Proof of Work (PoW) som innebär att deltagare – så kallade miners – tävlar om att behandla transaktioner genom att lösa komplexa matematiska problem, samt Proof of Stake (PoS) där validerare ”satsar” (stake) eller låser upp krypto för rätten att behandla transaktioner.

Layer 1-protokoll har begränsningar, en utmaning som Ethereums grundare Vitalik Buterin kallade för ”blockkedjetrilemmat” – en referens till teknikens tre nyckelfaktorer: decentralisering, säkerhet och skalbarhet. Eftersom det i praktiken är omöjligt att uppnå alla tre aspekter samtidigt, tvingas utvecklare till kompromisser, där decentralisering och säkerhet oftast prioriteras på bekostnad av skalbarhet. Som ett resultat kan Layer 1-protokoll bli överbelastade vid hög efterfrågan, vilket leder till ökade transaktionsavgifter. Ett exempel är sommaren 2020 då decentraliserade finansapplikationer började ta fart och Ethereums gasavgifter steg till över 50 dollar per transaktion.

Infrastrukturen bakom de två största kryptovalutorna sett till marknadsvärde, Bitcoin (2 biljoner dollar per 20 januari 2025) och Ethereum (403 miljarder dollar), utgjordes av L1-protokoll redan innan begreppet blev en del av kryptovärldens vokabulär. Andra kända exempel är Solana (121 miljarder dollar) och Cardano (36 miljarder dollar).

 

Layer 2

Layer 2-lösningar (L2) var en av de första innovationerna som skapades för att lösa blockkedjetrilemmat. Eftersom de är byggda ovanpå L1-protokoll ärver de säkerheten från det underliggande nätverket, som fortfarande avgör transaktionernas slutgiltighet. Hittills har de flesta L2-lösningar byggts på Ethereum.

Den vanligaste typen av L2-lösningar är rollups, som förbättrar skalbarheten och minskar avgifterna genom att bearbeta transaktioner utanför baslagret (”off-chain”). De samlar sedan transaktionerna i batcher och skickar dem till L1. Rollups finns i två varianter:

  • Optimistic rollups antar att transaktioner är giltiga om inte en L2-validator rapporterar något annat.

  • ZK rollups verifierar transaktioner med den kryptografiska tekniken zero-knowledge proofs, som skyddar känslig data. 

De största L2-lösningarna sett till marknadsvärde är (3,2 miljarder dollar per 20 januari 2025) som använder optimistic rollups och Polygon (3,8 miljarder dollar) som använder ZK-varianten. Andra uppmärksammade L2-lösningar inkluderar Arbitrum (3,1 miljarder dollar) och Optimism (2,3 miljarder dollar).

Bloomberg rapporterade nyligen att Deutsche Bank, en av världens största investeringsbanker, bygger ett L2 för att påskynda transaktioner och minska regleringsrisker, som att hantera sanktionerade enheter, genom att förbättra transparensen. Som en del av Monetary Authority of Singapores ”Project Guardian” – en grupp finansiella institutioner som utforskar blockkedjelösningar – kommer denna L2 att byggas på Ethereum och använda ZK-rollups.

 

Layer 3

Layer3 (L3) är ett applikationslager ovanpå L2, där utvecklare kan bygga decentraliserade applikationer på egna blockkedjor. Deras höga anpassningsförmåga gör att de kan öka skalbarheten eller förbättra användarnas integritet, samtidigt som de förlitar sig på säkerheten i baslagret. Med tanke på att Ethereum är värd för majoriteten av L2-lösningarna gäller detsamma för L3.

Layer 3-lösningen kan också fungera som en brygga eller ett kommunikationsprotokoll, vilket möjliggör att applikationsfunktioner delas mellan flera blockkedjor. Detta kallas interoperabilitet och är en nyckelfunktion som driver på blockkedjeadoptionen, eftersom det eliminerar barriärerna mellan olika L1-nätverk.

Degen Chain, som lanserades våren 2024, är den största L3-lösningen sett till marknadsvärde (110 miljoner dollar per 20 januari 2025). Den är byggd på Base och tillhandahåller en flexibel infrastruktur anpassad efter behoven hos användarna av Warpcast, ett decentraliserat socialt nätverk. Exempel på decentraliserade appar (dApps) som körs på protokollet är den decentraliserade börsen Degenswap och NFTdegen, en plattform för att skapa och lansera NFT:er. Degen Chains inhemska token, DEGEN, är en meme-coin som hämtar inspiration från ”degeneratives” – kryptovärldens benämning på spekulativa handlare.

 

Layer 0

Layer 0 (L0) tillhandahåller infrastrukturen för utvecklare att bygga och distribuera anpassningsbara L1-blockkedjor som är utformade för enskilda applikationer eller specifika användningsområden. L0 består av tre komponenter: en huvudkedja för att underlätta dataöverföring, sidokedjor som stödjer applikationen eller användningsområdet, samt ett protokoll som möjliggör kommunikation mellan L1-blockkedjor. Varje sidokedja har sin egen konsensusmekanism och kan utnyttja den säkerhet som tillhandahålls av Layer 0-lösningen.

Förutom att underlätta interoperabilitet kan Layer 0 bidra till att lösa blockkedjetrilemmat eftersom L1-lösningarna kan utformas för att förbättra skalbarheten.

Polkadot är den största Layer 0-lösningen sett till marknadsvärde (10 miljarder dollar per 20 januari 2025). Den rymmer 215 sidokedjor, så kallade parachains, där Bittensor är den mest betydande med ett marknadsvärde på 3,5 miljarder dollar. Bittensor kopplar samman leverantörer med överskott av beräkningskraft och utvecklare av AI-applikationer som behöver träna och köra sina modeller.

Bland de mest betydande L0-protokollen sett till marknadsvärde finns Avalanche (15 miljarder dollar per 20 januari 2025), där huvudnätverket kallas det primära nätverket och sidokedjorna subnät, samt Cosmos (2,4 miljarder dollar) som består av en hubb och zoner.

 

Slutsats

Blockkedjetekniken består av fyra lager, där de tre första bygger på varandra. 

Layer 1, som Bitcoin och Ethereum, är det grundläggande lagret. De behandlar transaktioner och säkrar nätverket med hjälp av konsensusmekanismer som exempelvis PoW eller PoS. L1-blockkedjor har den största ekonomiska betydelsen i Web3-ekosystemet, men de möter begränsningar kopplade till ”blockkedjetrilemmat”.

Layer 2-protokoll löser dessa begränsningar, vanligtvis genom att bearbeta transaktioner åt ett L1 och sedan skicka dem i batcher till baslagret.

Layer 3 gör det möjligt för utvecklare att skapa anpassningsbara blockkedjor för att driva enskilda decentraliserade applikationer. De underlättar också interoperabiliteten mellan kedjorna.

Slutligen tillhandahåller Layer 0-lösningar infrastrukturen för att utveckla anpassningsbara L1-blockkedjor, som hanterar blockkedjetrilemmat och förbättrar interoperabiliteten.
