Satoshi Nakamoto, pseudonymen för Bitcoins grundare, utformade kryptovalutan som ett peer-to-peer-nätverk. Det innebär att motparter kan göra transaktioner direkt utan att mellanhänder, som en bank, behövs. Systemet behövde ett sätt att registrera transaktioner och förhindra dubbelutgifter (där en innehavare spenderar samma mynt flera gånger), så Satoshi implementerade därför en så kallad konsensusmekanism.

En konsensusmekanism förlitar sig på grupper av deltagare, oftast kallade noder, för att upprätthålla en huvudbok över alla transaktioner. Mekanismen spelar därför en avgörande roll för säkerheten och skalbarheten hos blockkedjan. Eftersom tekniken är relativt obekant för många utanför kryptovärlden förklarar denna artikel hur de två vanligaste mekanismerna fungerar, samt utforskar deras främsta skillnader.

Proof of Work (PoW)

PoW förlitar sig på två olika typer av noder för att upprätthålla nätverket.

Miners (brytare) ansvarar för att validera transaktioner och lägga till nya block i kedjan. De tävlar om rätten att behandla transaktioner genom att lösa komplexa matematiska problem som kräver stora mängder datorkraft. Som belöning tjänar miners blockbelöningar i form av protokollets inbyggda valuta – vilket är det främsta sättet som mynt kommer i omlopp. Ett exempel är att Bitcoins blockbelöning efter den senaste halveringen ligger på 3,125 BTC, till ett värde av 196.837 USD (per den 27 augusti 2024). 

Den andra typen av noder är de enskilda servrar som utgör själva blockkedjan. De verifierar varje block, förhindrar dubbelutgifter och säkerställer att hela nätverket har den senaste uppdateringen av varje transaktion.

PoW är konsensusmekanismen som används av Bitcoin, den ursprungliga kryptovalutan med störst marknadsvärde. Även andra valutor använder den, såsom dogecoin (marknadsvärde 15.36 miljarder USD), litecoin (4.74 miljarder USD) och monero (3,08 miljarder USD). Ethereum lanserades som ett PoW-protokoll innan det övergick till Proof of Stake.

Den största fördelen med PoW är säkerhetsaspekten. En illvillig aktör skulle behöva kontrollera 51 % av blockkedjan, en så kallad 51 %-attack, för att kunna ändra redan bearbetade transaktioner. Den mängd datorkraft som detta skulle kräva – för närvarande uppskattad till 724miljoner USD per timme för Bitcoin – gör detta oöverkomligt. PoW-konsensusmekanismer är också mycket decentraliserade, eftersom tröskeln för att bli en nod är låg – enligt kryptobetalningsappen Bitpay hade Bitcoin-nätverket 18 000 noder i februari i år. 

Det finns också nackdelar. En av de största kritikerna mot PoW är mängden energi som används av miners. Forskning från University of Cambridge rankar Bitcoin på plats 27 bland industrier och länder för global elförbrukning och på plats 67 när det gäller utsläpp av växthusgaser. Men miners diversifierar dock verksamheten till alternativa energikällor. Den andra kritiken mot PoW är bristen på skalbarhet. I Bitcoins fall prioriterade Satoshi nätverkets säkerhet och decentralisering, vilket saktar ner hanteringen av transaktioner (det så kallade blockkedjetrilemmat). Layer 2-lösningar hjälper till att hantera detta problem.

Proof of Stake (PoS)

PoS-noder är validerare som måste låsa in eller satsa (stake) inhemska tokens i ett smart kontrakt för att få rätt att behandla transaktioner och verifiera block innan de läggs till i kedjan. Att bli utvald är lite av ett lotteri, eftersom protokollet slumpmässigt väljer en validator för varje block. Med det sagt, ju högre insats (stake), desto bättre chanser.

PoS-protokoll betalar också ut blockbelöningar i sin inhemska token. Men de straffar noder för illvilligt beteende, som att vara offline eller godkänna ogiltiga block, genom att konfiskera eller ”slasha” en del av deras insats.

I vissa fall kan den minsta insats som krävs för att delta i en PoS-konsensusmekanism verka oöverkomlig. Exempelvis måste Ethereum-validerare låsa in 32 ether, till ett värde av 99.185 USD per den 15 november 2024. Stakingpooler möjliggör dock för innehavare med mindre mängder inhemska tokens att slå samman sina medel och tjäna en passiv inkomst. Några av de mest populära ether-poolerna är Lido och RocketPool, medan börser som Binance och Coinbase också erbjuder den här tjänsten.

Ethereum, det näst största kryptot i marknadsvärde, övergick som bekant från PoW till PoS i september 2022. Händelsen fick smeknamnet ”The Merge”. Många av de protokoll som ger blockkedjetekniken större funktionalitet använder också PoS, däribland Cardano (marknadsvärde 13.28 miljarder USD), Avalanche (10.58 miljarder USD), Polkadot (6.81miljarder USD) och Near (5.40 miljarder USD).

En av de främsta fördelarna med PoS är dess skalbarhet. Den genomsnittliga tiden det tar för Ethereum att behandla ett block av transaktioner är 12.06 sekunder, jämfört med ett genomsnitt på 10.75 minuter för Bitcoin – huvudsakligen tack vare att det går relativt snabbt att välja validatorer. En annan fördel är energieffektiviteten, då en vanlig bärbar dator kan köra programvaran för att validera transaktioner. The Merge minskade Ethereums energiförbrukning med 99,9 %.

Den främsta kritiken mot PoS är den potentiella centralisering som orsakas av att ett litet antal validerare med stora resurser dominerar, vilket ökar risken för en så kallad ”single point of failure”. Forskning från Dune visar att Lido och Coinbase för närvarande står för över 40.7 % av den totala mängden ether som är låst i Ethereums ekosystem. PoS-protokoll gör det också möjligt för de största aktörerna att befästa sin dominans genom att tjäna majoriteten av blockbelöningarna och låter tidiga användare etablera oproportionerligt inflytande.    

Slutsats

En konsensusmekanism är ett system som validerar transaktioner på en blockkedja och säkerställer att alla noder har den senaste versionen av huvudboken. PoW och PoS är de vanligaste.

Satoshi skapade PoW-mekanismen för Bitcoin, det första och största kryptot, och tidiga mynt som dogecoin och litecoin följde dess exempel. Ethereum, som är det näst största kryptot efter marknadsvärde, är den mest uppmärksammade PoS-blockkedjan. Även protokoll som Cardano och Avalanche har antagit PoS-mekanismen.  

PoW och PoS har olika tillvägagångssätt när de väljer ut validerare för att behandla transaktioner och lägga till block i kedjan. PoW kräver att validerare (så kallade miners) löser komplexa matematiska problem, medan PoS slumpmässigt väljer validerare som har satsat en viss mängd av protokollets inhemska token.
