Nel momento in cui scrivo questo articolo, i future su S&P 500 e Nasdaq 100 hanno toccato nuovi massimi storici questa mattina, mentre il Brent è sceso del 2,2% sulla prospettiva di un accordo tra Stati Uniti e Iran che porterebbe alla piena riapertura dello Stretto di Hormuz.¹ Bitcoin si è mantenuto intorno ai 75.750 dollari. Il rendimento del Treasury decennale statunitense è sceso di due punti base al 4,47%. In tutte le asset class, il messaggio sembra essere lo stesso: lo scenario peggiore è stato evitato, l’azionario può riprendere la sua corsa trainata dall’AI e il mercato obbligazionario può smettere di preoccuparsi.

Non è questo il messaggio che traggo dalle ultime tre settimane. E certamente non è il messaggio che Russell Napier ha espresso nella sua lettera del 20 maggio, che consiglierei a chiunque creda ancora che il recente aumento dei rendimenti sovrani nei mercati sviluppati sia semplicemente una storia legata ai prezzi dell’energia.²

L’argomentazione di Napier, in sintesi, è che i rendimenti dei Gilt decennali britannici si trovano a livelli che non si vedevano da quasi 20 anni. Le obbligazioni giapponesi a lunga scadenza sono ai massimi da 30 anni. I titoli francesi decennali vengono scambiati a rendimenti visti l’ultima volta nel secondo trimestre del 2009, con la differenza che allora il debito del settore privato francese rispetto al PIL era al 171%, mentre oggi è al 215%. Nulla di tutto questo riguarda l’energia. Si tratta del fatto che il mercato obbligazionario sta finalmente iniziando a prezzare la realtà strutturale secondo cui i governi intendono finanziare le proprie posizioni fiscali attraverso le banche commerciali, che le aspettative di inflazione stanno lentamente perdendo il proprio ancoraggio (i break-even britannici a 50 anni sono passati dal 3,17% di gennaio al 3,40% di maggio) e che la risposta politica alla prossima recessione non assomiglierà a quella del 2008 o del 2020. Potrebbe assomigliare molto di più al 1973, ma con software migliori.

Napier definisce tutto questo con un’espressione: nazionalismo del capitale. Descrive un mondo in cui lo Stato dirige l’allocazione del credito privato, in cui le banche commerciali vengono progressivamente chiamate a finanziare i deficit sovrani, in cui i controlli sui capitali ritornano sotto altre forme e in cui la repressione finanziaria finisce per diventare la caratteristica dominante del sistema monetario del prossimo decennio.

È importante sottolineare che l’attuale aumento dei rendimenti sovrani a lunga scadenza non costituisce di per sé repressione finanziaria. È il mercato obbligazionario che inizia a rifiutare traiettorie fiscali alle quali, storicamente, i policymaker hanno finito per rispondere attraverso repressione, assorbimento forzato domestico del debito sovrano e tassi reali strutturalmente negativi.

Se si accetta questa diagnosi, le implicazioni per la costruzione di portafoglio diventano scomode. I titoli di Stato, storicamente considerati strumenti di copertura, diventano essi stessi strumenti di repressione. Ampie aree del mercato azionario statunitense, in particolare il complesso delle mega-cap guidate dall’AI, continuano a essere scambiate a multipli di valutazione storicamente elevati, offrendo momentum ma un margine di sicurezza limitato contro una recessione che si manifesta insieme a rendimenti a lungo termine più elevati anziché più bassi. La costruzione tradizionale del portafoglio viene sempre più messa alla prova da un regime per il quale non era stata progettata.

È esattamente questo il contesto per cui Bitcoin è stato progettato. Non si tratta di un argomento massimalista. È un argomento strutturale. Bitcoin è l’unica rete monetaria globalmente liquida e accessibile a livello istituzionale con un programma di emissione credibilmente predefinito e non soggetto a interventi politici discrezionali. In un mondo in cui i governi stanno visibilmente perdendo la disciplina che ha ancorato le aspettative di inflazione dal 1998, in cui l’euro viene silenziosamente ridefinito come “l’euro emesso da Francoforte” e in cui sistemi bancari nazionali sempre più divergenti sono costretti ad assorbire internamente le esigenze di finanziamento sovrano. Volatilità e credibilità monetaria non sono la stessa cosa. La prima misura la scoperta del prezzo nel breve termine. La seconda misura l’integrità del quadro monetario nel tempo.

Che lo stretto venga riaperto completamente domani oppure no, il nazionalismo del capitale non si ferma. Il rapporto del servizio del debito francese non arretra. La Bank of Japan non smette di essere strutturalmente intrappolata. La prossima recessione non diventa meno probabile come detonatore della repressione finanziaria.

Nel momento in cui un cambiamento di regime di questa portata viene segnalato dal mercato obbligazionario stesso, la domanda posta agli allocatori istituzionali cambia radicalmente. Ciò che viene richiesto a un allocatore nel 2026 è diverso da ciò che veniva richiesto nel 2016. Oggi il portafoglio deve proteggere da un regime per il quale non è mai stato progettato: obbligazioni che non diversificano più, azioni prezzate per una recessione che non arriva e un sistema di risparmio che, per intenzione politica, diventa strumento della propria erosione. La domanda più difficile è comprendere quale possa essere un sistema monetario onesto una volta che la fiducia in quello attuale non è più un presupposto implicito.


Una nota prima di concludere. Martedì i media hanno riportato la notizia della scomparsa di Nathan Allman, cofondatore di Ondo Finance.³ Non lo conoscevo personalmente e non scriverò come se fosse così. Ma il lavoro costruito da Ondo — portare i Treasury statunitensi on-chain, proprio la classe di attivi oggi al centro della transizione monetaria discussa in questa lettera — rappresenta uno dei ponti più significativi mai costruiti tra l’infrastruttura finanziaria tradizionale e le infrastrutture blockchain con cui interagirà sempre di più nel tempo. Il fatto stesso che oggi si svolgano conversazioni istituzionali sui Treasury tokenizzati deve molto a quel team. Il mio pensiero va alla sua famiglia, ai suoi colleghi e a tutti in Ondo. Costruiamo perché il lavoro sopravvive a noi. Oggi mi sembrava importante dirlo.
