Bitcoin supera gli 80.000 dollari mentre i rendimenti toccano il massimo da diciannove anni

Nell'ultima settimana gli asset digitali hanno mostrato una resilienza sorprendente. Il messaggio restrittivo arrivato la scorsa settimana dalla Federal Reserve e la bocciatura del CLARITY Act al Senato avevano lasciato un contesto che appariva difficile: l'inflazione resta troppo elevata, la politica monetaria resta in territorio restrittivo e la via legislativa verso un quadro normativo statunitense sulla struttura del mercato si è arenata. Eppure i prezzi, anziché cedere, sono saliti. Bitcoin è risalito da circa 75.000 dollari, con un guadagno di circa il 13 % nell'arco della settimana, ha scambiato sopra gli 87.000 dollari il 23 settembre, per poi assestarsi in prossimità degli 84.000 dollari.1 È il superamento netto di quella soglia di 80.000 dollari che la scorsa settimana avevamo indicato come subordinata alla comparsa di un catalizzatore.

A nostro avviso ciò non significa che le criptovalute si siano scollegate dal quadro macroeconomico. Il movimento riflette un contesto normativo più chiaro, la continua accumulazione da parte dei grandi detentori, una robusta raccolta nei fondi e la crescente preoccupazione per la sostenibilità della politica fiscale e monetaria statunitense.

Il quadro della SEC è ora il regime vigente

Il CLARITY Act non ha raggiunto i sessanta voti necessari a proseguire l'iter: il 15 settembre il Senato ha respinto con 49 voti contro 50 la mozione di cloture, il voto procedurale che chiude la discussione e consente al testo di avanzare.2 Letta in senso stretto, è una battuta d'arresto. Letta in termini pratici, cambia meno di quanto il titolo lasci intendere, perché la Commissione aveva già definito un proprio quadro di riferimento. A marzo la SEC aveva pubblicato una tassonomia che copre commodity digitali, collezionabili digitali, strumenti digitali, stablecoin e titoli digitali, chiarendo al contempo come la disciplina sui valori mobiliari si applichi allo staking, agli airdrop e agli asset wrapped che non hanno natura di titolo.2 Quel quadro era stato redatto per accompagnare l'intervento legislativo. Venuto meno l'iter parlamentare, diventa il regime vigente, non una soluzione provvisoria, mentre SEC e CFTC conservano entrambe l'autorità necessaria per continuare a svilupparlo. Ciò che è stato deciso non sono le regole in sé, ma chi le scrive; e per ora la risposta sono le autorità di vigilanza.

I flussi hanno rappresentato il sostegno più misurabile. I nostri dati indicano circa 3,5 miliardi di dollari di raccolta sui prodotti d'investimento in asset digitali a livello di settore nelle ultime cinque sedute, un netto capovolgimento rispetto ai riscatti registrati a metà mese. L'accumulazione da parte dei grandi detentori prosegue da agosto, sia pure su livelli relativamente contenuti. Un contributo è arrivato anche dal petrolio: dopo cinque sedute consecutive in calo il Brent è tornato sotto i 100 dollari al barile, allentando parte della pressione inflazionistica immediata.1

Lo sviluppo più interessante, tuttavia, è il comportamento delle criptovalute di fronte al rinnovato orientamento restrittivo. I dati PMI statunitensi sono risultati superiori alle attese, a conferma di un'attività economica ancora solida, mentre i prezzi del petrolio restano elevati. Anche i vertici della Fed hanno adottato un tono più fermo: Michael Barr ha sottolineato l'aumento dei rischi inflazionistici e la minore rischiosità sul fronte occupazionale, mentre Austan Goolsbee ha avvertito che lo shock energetico potrebbe tradursi in un'inflazione più persistente. La reazione dei mercati è stata netta, con la probabilità implicita di un rialzo dei tassi in ottobre salita a circa il 70 %.

I rendimenti dei Treasury hanno lasciato meno spazio all'interpretazione. Il decennale ha toccato il 5,12 % il 23 settembre, il livello più alto dal 2007.1 In un quadro macroeconomico convenzionale si tratta di un freno significativo per Bitcoin: rendimenti più alti rendono più attraenti i titoli di Stato e irrigidiscono le condizioni finanziarie, e una Fed più restrittiva tende a penalizzare gli attivi sensibili alla liquidità. Bitcoin si è effettivamente indebolito in giornata rispetto ai massimi, ma molto meno di quanto l'ampiezza del riprezzamento lascerebbe normalmente presumere, e ha chiuso la settimana ben al di sopra dei livelli di partenza.

Conta il quadro, non il livello

Tutto ciò colloca la Fed e il Tesoro in una posizione sempre più difficile. Se l'inflazione dovesse restare elevata, la Fed potrebbe sentirsi costretta a inasprire ulteriormente la politica monetaria. Ma tassi più alti accrescono la pressione sui conti pubblici e sul mercato dei Treasury. Se i rendimenti continuassero a salire, aumenterebbe anche la probabilità di un intervento più aggressivo, sotto forma di acquisti di titoli di Stato su scala maggiore o di altri tentativi di comprimere i rendimenti sulla parte lunga della curva.

Resta un rischio di coda, non il nostro scenario base, ma la sua rilevanza è crescente. L'aspetto più notevole della settimana appena trascorsa è stato la combinazione di una raccolta robusta e di una dinamica dei prezzi positiva a fronte di un contesto dei tassi assai più restrittivo. Le criptovalute non si sono scollegate dal quadro macroeconomico; piuttosto, il mercato sembra spostare la propria attenzione dal solo livello dei tassi alla domanda se sia sostenibile lo stesso quadro di politica economica su cui si fondano.
