Un brusco cambiamento del sentiment, non dei fondamentali

Il sentiment degli investitori è peggiorato sensibilmente nell’ultimo mese. Nelle ultime tre settimane e in quella attuale abbiamo registrato deflussi per 5,8 miliardi di dollari dai prodotti d’investimento in asset digitali, una delle più consistenti serie di deflussi settimanali degli ultimi dodici mesi. È importante però mantenere la giusta prospettiva: nonostante questi movimenti, l’asset class rimane sostanzialmente invariata da inizio anno. Si tratta di uno shock di sentiment, non di un cambiamento strutturale.

Il fattore più immediato è la geopolitica. Le oscillazioni legate al conflitto con l’Iran si stanno rivelando più difficili da risolvere di quanto i mercati sperassero: le due parti restano molto distanti e questa incertezza si è riflessa direttamente sulle aspettative sui tassi d’interesse. Due mesi fa il mercato prezzava uno o due tagli dei tassi nel corso dell’anno, uno scenario che avrebbe sostenuto Bitcoin. Oggi la situazione si è ribaltata: la curva dei tassi implica circa 40 punti base di rialzi. È questa rivalutazione delle aspettative a causare gran parte della pressione attuale su Bitcoin.

Mi aspetterei che questo finisca per pesare sulla crescita statunitense, ma desidero essere preciso: al momento ciò non è ancora visibile nei dati. Gli indicatori macroeconomici hanno tenuto bene e, sebbene i dati sull’occupazione di domani possano deludere, i dati concreti hanno finora mostrato una notevole resilienza.

La seconda forza in gioco è l’intelligenza artificiale, che sta semplicemente attirando liquidità lontano da tutto il resto. I flussi verso esposizioni legate all’AI restano robusti — più difficili da quantificare rispetto ai flussi crypto, ma inequivocabili — e con tutta l’attenzione del mercato concentrata su questo tema, Bitcoin viene messo in secondo piano. Lo stesso fenomeno è visibile nei titoli statunitensi del software e dei servizi, che stanno soffrendo proprio perché il mercato si interroga su quanto della spesa attuale possa essere sostituita dall’AI.

Sulla “bolla” dell’AI

È arrivato il momento di utilizzare il termine “bolla” con maggiore libertà parlando di AI, con una precisazione importante. Una bolla, nella sua definizione più corretta, rappresenta un’allocazione inefficiente del capitale, e questa inefficienza non sarà evidente prima di un paio d’anni.

L’aspetto da monitorare è il divario tra investimenti e ricavi: oggi è in corso un’enorme ondata di spesa in conto capitale e vi è uno scarto tra tali investimenti e i ricavi necessari a giustificare le valutazioni attuali.

SpaceX rappresenta un esempio utile: alla base rimane un’attività relativamente semplice, ma con numerose iniziative aggiunte nel tempo, AI inclusa, che stanno spingendo le valutazioni verso livelli estremamente elevati. I mercati hanno sempre uno spirito del tempo dominante e, in questo momento, è chiaramente l’intelligenza artificiale.

Strategy di Michael Saylor: simbolica, non sistemica

Le vendite effettuate da Strategy (ex MicroStrategy) hanno avuto un impatto simbolicamente negativo sul sentiment, ma poco più di questo. Anche nello scenario peggiore, le sue partecipazioni rappresentano circa l’1% dell’offerta totale di Bitcoin: non si tratta di un rischio sistemico, così come non lo sono le partecipazioni inattive di Satoshi.

La recente vendita sembra essere stata finalizzata a coprire obblighi legati ai dividendi e a testare il mercato. Inoltre, non è la prima volta che Saylor vende: lo aveva già fatto nel dicembre 2022 per finalità di compensazione fiscale delle perdite. Non aiuta il sentiment, ma non cambia nulla dal punto di vista fondamentale.

Bitcoin: sotto pressione, ma non compromesso

Mi sorprenderebbe vedere Bitcoin raggiungere nuovi minimi di ciclo partendo dall’area dei 60.000 dollari. Il sentiment è chiaramente indebolito e siamo probabilmente sulla strada verso i maggiori deflussi settimanali dell’ultimo anno. Tuttavia, nulla di tutto questo compromette la traiettoria di lungo periodo di Bitcoin — e per lungo periodo intendo un orizzonte di un anno o più.

Quello che non farò è parlare di una vera rottura rialzista finché la situazione in Iran non si sarà risolta e le prospettive sui tassi non saranno migliorate. Quando Bitcoin ha raggiunto gli 80.000 dollari eravamo già cauti, ritenendo difficile un ulteriore rialzo deciso alla luce di questi fattori avversi, e tale cautela si è rivelata giustificata.

Cosa viene dopo: la tokenizzazione

Se l’AI rappresenta il tema dominante di oggi, ritengo che la tokenizzazione sarà il prossimo. E le evidenze stanno già emergendo. L’offerta di stablecoin è cresciuta da 300 miliardi a 360 miliardi di dollari nell’arco di sei mesi.

Assumendo che il CLARITY Act venga approvato e trasformato in legge — nello scenario più ottimistico intorno al 4 luglio — mi aspetto un’accelerazione dell’adozione, con banche e istituzioni finanziarie pronte a rafforzare le proprie iniziative per cogliere i benefici di efficienza disponibili. Scott Bessent ha suggerito che il mercato delle stablecoin potrebbe raggiungere i 2.000 miliardi di dollari entro il 2028; trattandosi di una previsione formulata da un alto funzionario in carica, è una cifra che merita attenzione.

La settimana in arrivo

L’attenzione sarà rivolta a due riunioni delle banche centrali: quella della BCE il prossimo giovedì e quella della Federal Reserve la settimana successiva.

La riunione della Fed sarà particolarmente significativa poiché rappresenta la prima sotto la guida di Kevin Warsh. Warsh ha già indicato l’intenzione di fornire meno forward guidance rispetto al suo predecessore, lasciando così al mercato una maggiore responsabilità nell’interpretazione delle prospettive future.
