Le probabilità di rialzo sono scese, i rendimenti a lungo termine hanno toccato un massimo di 24 anni e il Bitcoin si è consolidato

Il Bitcoin ha beneficiato questa settimana di una marcata riduzione delle aspettative di rialzo dei tassi a breve termine. Il catalizzatore iniziale è stato il presidente della Fed di New York, John Williams, secondo cui il rialzo di 25 punti base di settembre aveva ridotto l'urgenza di un ulteriore inasprimento e la Fed disponeva ora di tempo per valutare i dati in arrivo. I mercati hanno reagito rapidamente, con la probabilità implicita di un rialzo a ottobre scesa da circa il 75% a circa il 50%. I dati successivi hanno ulteriormente abbassato le aspettative, con i mercati che ora attribuiscono una probabilità di circa il 37% a un rialzo a ottobre.

Gli stessi dati economici sono diventati più contrastanti. Le offerte di lavoro JOLTS di agosto sono scese a 7,079 milioni, sotto le attese e al livello più basso degli ultimi cinque mesi, mentre la fiducia dei consumatori di settembre è crollata bruscamente a 81,9 da 88,6, il livello più debole dal 2014. Entrambi i dati indicano una domanda di lavoro più debole e una pressione crescente sui consumatori. Anche gli ultimi dati sul PCE sono stati relativamente incoraggianti: l'inflazione core è salita dello 0,2% su base mensile e del 3,0% su base annua, sotto le attese, rafforzando l'argomento a favore della pazienza della Fed.

Il quadro è tuttavia tutt'altro che uniformemente debole. Il PIL del secondo trimestre è stato rivisto al 2,2% annualizzato, la spesa per consumi è salita di uno solido 0,9% ad agosto e le richieste iniziali di sussidio di disoccupazione sono scese al livello più basso da luglio. La Fed si trova quindi di fronte a un'insolita combinazione di indicatori prospettici più deboli su occupazione e fiducia, accanto a un'attività sottostante relativamente resiliente.

Per il Bitcoin, la riduzione delle aspettative sui tassi è stata favorevole. Ciò conferma quanto l'asset resti sensibile, nel breve periodo, alla politica monetaria e alla liquidità in dollari. Tassi di riferimento attesi più bassi riducono l'attrattiva relativa della liquidità e dei titoli del Tesoro a breve scadenza, migliorando generalmente il contesto per il Bitcoin e altri asset sensibili alla liquidità.

Ciò che risulta insolito è il comportamento del mercato dei Treasury. Mentre i futures hanno ridotto sensibilmente le aspettative di un rialzo a ottobre, i rendimenti a più lunga scadenza hanno continuato a salire. Il Treasury decennale ha brevemente raggiunto circa il 5,3%, il livello più alto dal 2002. Questa divergenza suggerisce che gli investitori stanno distinguendo sempre più tra la politica della Fed sulla parte breve della curva e le preoccupazioni legate alla sostenibilità fiscale, all'ingente emissione di Treasury e al premio a termine sulla parte lunga.

Ciò potrebbe essere potenzialmente importante per il Bitcoin. Il calo delle aspettative sui tassi di riferimento è favorevole attraverso il consueto canale della liquidità, mentre l'aumento dei rendimenti a lungo termine riflette sempre più una preoccupazione per la sostenibilità fiscale statunitense piuttosto che un semplice inasprimento monetario. Se questa distinzione dovesse accentuarsi, il Bitcoin potrebbe beneficiare sia di un percorso della Fed atteso più accomodante, sia di una domanda rinnovata per asset non sovrani.

I flussi dei fondi mostrano tuttavia che gli investitori restano cauti. Finora questa settimana abbiamo osservato afflussi per circa 150 milioni di dollari, un drastico rallentamento rispetto ai circa 3,5 miliardi di dollari della settimana precedente. Il cambiamento non sembra ancora un'inversione del sentiment, ma suggerisce che gli investitori stanno diventando più selettivi dopo un periodo di afflussi così marcato.

Nel complesso, il contesto macroeconomico è migliorato per il Bitcoin, ma resta delicatamente bilanciato. Dati più deboli su occupazione, fiducia e inflazione hanno ridotto la necessità di un ulteriore rialzo immediato, mentre la persistenza di rendimenti dei Treasury a lungo termine molto elevati sta creando una preoccupazione fiscale distinta. Entrambi gli sviluppi potrebbero rivelarsi, in definitiva, favorevoli per il Bitcoin, sebbene attraverso canali molto diversi.
