Che cos’è wBTC, il Bitcoin tokenizzato acquistato dalla crypto venture di Trump?

A poche ore dall’insediamento alla Casa Bianca del presidente Donald Trump, il progetto DeFi (finanza decentralizzata) World Liberty Financial (una delle sue crypto venture) ha acquistato una significativa quantità di criptovalute. Nello specifico, sono stati comprati wBTC per 47 milioni di dollari, ai quali il 24 gennaio è seguito l’acquisto di 95 token (per un ammontare di circa 20 milioni) dello stesso asset, come riportato dalla società di dati Arkham Intelligence. Queste acquisizioni hanno portato molti media e osservatori, compresi la stessa Arkham Intelligence e il fondatore di una piattaforma news sulle criptovalute, ad annunciare l’acquisizione di Bitcoin da parte della società di Donald Trump. L’universo delle criptovalute è estremamente complesso, e una sua narrazione troppo semplificata potrebbe indurre gli investitori meno esperti ad assumere decisioni rischiose. Ecco perché è importante sottolineare che wBTC non è Bitcoin.

 

Cosa significa wBTC?

wBTC sta per “Wrapped Bitcoin”, una versione tokenizzata di Bitcoin pensata per essere usata nell’ecosistema Ethereum. Lanciato nel 2019, wBTC permette a Bitcoin di funzionare sulla blockchain di Ethereum. Bitcoin e Ethereum sono due diverse blockchain con tecnologie incompatibili: ad esempio, non è possibile inviare Bitcoin a un indirizzo Ethereum perché i formati sono completamente diversi. Ciononostante Bitcoin, essendo l’asset digitale più famoso e con la maggiore liquidità, è estremamente ambito anche se i suoi limiti tecnici ne impediscono un uso nativo nell’ecosistema DeFi di Ethereum. Le piattaforme DeFi, avvalendosi di smart contract completi di Turing, consentono prestiti e scambi di prodotti derivati decentralizzati. Per colmare questa lacuna, gli utenti della community DeFi di Ethereum e il depositario BitGo hanno creato wBTC, un token ERC-20 (standard di Ethereum per i token fungibili).

 

Come funziona wBTC?

Per trasferire Bitcoin su Ethereum, un depositario (in questo caso BitGo) detiene i Bitcoin in riserva ed emette l’equivalente in token wBTC. Quando l’utente desidera rientrare in possesso dei Bitcoin originali, il token ERC-20 viene tolto dalla circolazione, mentre i Bitcoin vengono sbloccati.

Essendo un token ERC-20, wBTC può essere utilizzato come qualunque altro asset Ethereum. Può fungere da garanzia per prestiti, essere dato in prestito per ottenere rendimenti su piattaforme come MakerDAO, Compound, AAVE e Morpho, o essere scambiato con token nativi Ethereum come ETH, USDT e USDC.

 

Utilizzo limitato di wBTC

Nonostante wBTC consenta nuovi utilizzi di Bitcoin e apporti liquidità a Ethereum, rimane comunque poco usato dagli utenti DeFi.

Secondo Glassnode, al 24 gennaio 2025 solo 3.680 indirizzi detenevano un saldo di wBTC non equivalente allo zero.

Dopo il picco di maggio 2022, l’offerta di wBTC è passata da 283.000 token a circa 123.000. Ciononostante, la capitalizzazione di mercato è aumentata solo del 34,6% (da 9,8 a 13,24 miliardi di dollari) secondo Dune Analytics.

Quali sono i limiti di wBTC?

wBTC presenta taluni rischi, correlati principalmente ai depositari terzi come BitGo (oggi legata a Bit Global, l’impresa del fondatore di Tron Justin Sun). Sebbene BitGo vanti una solida reputazione sin dalla sua nascita nel 2013, rappresenta comunque una potenziale criticità. I problemi con il depositario potrebbero destabilizzare i meccanismi di emissione o rimborso di wBTC.

Inoltre, sebbene la governance di wBTC sia ripartita attraverso una DAO composta da diverse e rispettabili organizzazioni del settore  come BitGo, Kyber Network, Gnosis, MakerDAO e Ren, eventuali problemi con la DAO potrebbero compromettere la stabilità del token.

 

Essendo un token ERC-20, anche wBTC dipende da una rete di Ethereum. Eventuali modifiche al meccanismo di consenso di Ethereum o vulnerabilità negli smart contract di wBTC rappresenterebbero un rischio. Nonostante appaiano inverosimili, queste incertezze non sono ritenute accettabili da molti dei detentori di vecchia data di Bitcoin legati alla stabilità nativa del cosiddetto “oro digitale”. Inoltre, le transazioni in wBTC richiedono il pagamento delle gas fees in ETH, che possono diventare gravose durante i periodi di utilizzo elevato della rete Ethereum.

 

Esistono altre versioni di Bitcoin tokenizzati?

wBTC è la versione tokenizzata di Bitcoin più famosa, ma non la prima né l’unica. Ad esempio, non più tardi del 2013-14, l’ormai dimenticata blockchain BitShares ha presentato una versione tokenizzata di Bitcoin chiamata BitBTC. Tuttavia, l’obsolescenza della rete evidenzia il rischio di affidarsi ad asset collegati da ponti blockchain.

Fra le altre versioni di Bitcoin tokenizzati si annovera cbBTC, il Bitcoin tokenizzato di Coinbase lanciato di recente.

Rappresentano un potenziale investimento?

Dal punto di vista del mero investimento, l’acquisizione di Bitcoin wrapped o tokenizzati non ha molto senso, in quanto sarebbe meno rischioso detenere gli asset originali.

Tuttavia, wBTC ha dato il via a nuove possibilità per Bitcoin nell’ecosistema DeFi, nonostante la sua adozione rimanga limitata. Con l’emergere di nuove soluzioni di Bitcoin tokenizzati, rimane l’incertezza sulla capacità di wBTC di difendere la sua posizione di predominanza. In ogni caso è improbabile che i Bitcoin tokenizzati, in ogni loro forma, siano destinati a scomparire, soprattutto in virtù della maggiore adozione di criptovalute da parte delle istituzioni e della crescente richiesta di altre blockchain di avere la propria di Bitcoin. Ciononostante, i potenziali upgrade futuri al layer 1 nativo di Bitcoin potrebbe ridurre la necessità di asset tokenizzati come wBTC.
