I mercati finanziari operano sotto vincoli pratici: le strategie di negoziazione non possono essere rese pubbliche, il capitale non si muove liberamente tra i confini nazionali, la liquidity è regolata da normative e le operazioni non ancora concluse creano un rischio finanziario reale.

I primi progetti di blockchain non tenevano conto di queste realtà. Le blockchain pubbliche, infatti, offrivano regolamenti rapidi e infrastrutture condivise, ma richiedevano piena trasparenza, esponendo posizioni e attività sensibili. I sistemi blockchain privati proteggevano la riservatezza, ma così facendo isolavano i partecipanti in reti separate, sacrificando il coordinamento e ricreando un’infrastruttura di mercato frammentata.

In sintesi, ogni modello risolveva un problema, ma ne creava uno di nuovo.

Perché i mercati istituzionali hanno bisogno di coordinamento senza esposizione

Gli asset devono potersi muovere senza ostacoli tra aziende e sistemi, mentre le informazioni sensibili devono rimanere visibili solo alle parti direttamente coinvolte. I modelli blockchain esistenti costringevano a scegliere tra questi due risultati.

Canton Network nasce per eliminare questo compromesso.

Annunciata nel maggio 2023, Canton Network (CC) offre un coordinamento condiviso senza richiedere visibilità condivisa. Le istituzioni ottengono la possibilità di effettuare transazioni e regolare operazioni tra sistemi indipendenti senza esporre l’attività commerciale oltre i partecipanti previsti.

Le istituzioni possono scambiare asset e regolare pagamenti tra diverse applicazioni mantenendo riservatezza, conformità normativa e controllo.

Una rete costruita attorno alle istituzioni

Canton opera come una rete di reti, collegando applicazioni e asset digitali tra finanza tradizionale, criptovalute istituzionali, mercati di assicurazioni e mutui per consentire lo scambio sicuro di valore senza visibilità condivisa o controllo centralizzato.

Ogni istituzione gestisce la propria applicazione con regole indipendenti, limiti di privacy e controlli operativi, senza un unico registro condiviso che imponga una visibilità universale.

Inoltre, il regolamento tra applicazioni è atomico: le transazioni o vengono completate integralmente per tutte le parti oppure falliscono completamente.

Il Global Synchronizer

Al centro di Canton si trova il Global Synchronizer, un layer di coordinamento decentralizzato responsabile dell’ordinamento e della marcatura temporale delle transazioni tra applicazioni indipendenti. Fondamentale è il fatto che il Global Synchronizer non accede mai al contenuto delle transazioni: osserva solo gli impegni, verifica l’ordine delle transazioni ed è progettato per garantire il regolamento atomico, senza avere visibilità sui dati sensibili.

Canton 17032026La governance è fornita dalla Global Synchronizer Foundation (GSF), un’organizzazione no-profit indipendente creata sotto la Linux Foundation nel luglio 2024.

La mainnet Canton è stata lanciata nel luglio 2024. La GSF include la partecipazione di Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Börse Group, Euroclear, Moody’s Ratings, Broadridge, Tradeweb e altri. La rete conta oggi quasi 400 partecipanti ed è supportata da un round di finanziamento strategico da 135 milioni di dollari. L’infrastruttura Canton dichiara di supportare oltre 3.600 miliardi di dollari in asset tokenizzati1, mentre le implementazioni private elaborano oltre 50 miliardi di dollari di volume giornaliero di transazioni.

Il controllo su ordine delle transazioni, accesso e politiche è strutturalmente distribuito, anziché concentrato in un singolo attore.

Privacy a livello contrattuale con Daml

Canton utilizza Daml, un linguaggio di programmazione per smart contract progettato per flussi di lavoro che coinvolgono più parti, in cui privacy e autorizzazioni sono definite fin dall’inizio. Invece di rendere tutte le attività visibili per impostazione predefinita, la riservatezza è il punto di partenza.

Ogni contratto definisce chi è coinvolto, chi può compiere azioni e chi può visualizzare il risultato. Di conseguenza, i dettagli delle transazioni sono visibili solo alle parti rilevanti, mentre le autorità di regolamentazione possono ricevere accesso limitato quando necessario. Altri partecipanti, inclusi concorrenti e fornitori di infrastrutture, non ricevono i dettagli delle transazioni per impostazione predefinita,

a differenza delle blockchain pubbliche, dove le transazioni sono scritte su un registro condiviso visibile a chiunque, lasciando alle autorità di regolamentazione un accesso alle attività sul modello “tutto o niente”.

Esempio: quando una Banca A esegue transazioni con una Banca B su una blockchain pubblica, prezzo, dimensione e tempistica dell’operazione sono visibili a ogni osservatore. In Canton, solo le due banche vedono i dettagli della transazione, mentre un’autorità di regolamentazione può confermare che il regolamento è avvenuto senza accedere alle informazioni commerciali sensibili.

Regolamento atomico: tutto o niente

Nella finanza tradizionale, le transazioni possono fallire a metà processo: una parte consegna gli asset, mentre il pagamento dell’altra rimane bloccato. Questo crea problemi significativi, in cui gli asset rimangono bloccati tra processi manuali di pulizia e incertezza nei bilanci.

Canton è progettata per garantire un regolamento atomico: le transazioni si completano interamente per tutti i partecipanti oppure falliscono completamente. Non esiste esecuzione parziale né rischio di asset bloccati.

Quando una Banca A scambia garanzie con una Banca B mentre contemporaneamente regola un pagamento con una Banca C, tutte e tre le operazioni avvengono insieme oppure non ne avviene nessuna. Il sistema impedisce scenari in cui la garanzia viene trasferita ma il pagamento fallisce, lasciando una delle parti esposta.

Scalabilità indipendente: nessun punto critico condiviso

Ogni applicazione Canton è scalabile in modo indipendente. Un’applicazione è semplicemente un sistema software che gestisce una funzione finanziaria specifica, come ad esempio il regolamento delle operazioni, la gestione delle garanzie, l’elaborazione dei pagamenti o l’emissione di obbligazioni digitali. In molte blockchain tutte le applicazioni condividono la stessa capacità di elaborazione, quindi un’elevata attività in un’area può rallentare l’intero sistema. Poiché Canton mantiene le applicazioni separate, eventuali picchi di attività in un mercato non degradano gli altri e le istituzioni possono aggiungere capacità solo dove serve, senza aggiornamenti o coordinamento a livello di rete.

Tokenomics di Canton Coin

Canton Coin (CC) funziona come il carburante della rete: le commissioni per la capacità di sincronizzazione sono denominate in dollari, ma pagate in CC. L’attività della rete brucia monete. L’attività dei validatori e l’uso delle applicazioni creano nuova offerta.

Niente pre-mining né allocazioni per gli insider. Ogni moneta in circolazione è progettata per riflettere un contributo reale alla rete.

L’offerta è pensata per adattarsi alla domanda tramite un equilibrio “brucia e conia”, piuttosto che tramite posizionamento speculativo. Oltre 450 milioni di CC sono già stati bruciati attraverso il consumo reale della rete, indicando un’utilità concreta oltre alle narrazioni di mercato.

Il prezzo di mercato può fluttuare mentre l’attività di regolamento rimane stabile: uno schema familiare per le istituzioni che distinguono tra infrastruttura operativa e valore di un asset negoziato.

Validatori e infrastruttura neutrale

Canton è gestito da un gruppo di validatori provenienti sia da istituzioni finanziarie che da società indipendenti, riducendo così la dipendenza da un singolo attore. CoinShares opera come uno di questi validatori, contribuendo alla sicurezza della rete e alla sua operatività senza ottenere accesso preferenziale né visibilità sui dati delle transazioni.

Gestire un validatore comporta responsabilità operative piuttosto che autorità. I validatori aiutano a mantenere la rete funzionante, ma non possono vedere i dati delle transazioni né stabilire unilateralmente le politiche. Gli incentivi iniziali della rete erano orientati alla stabilità; con il tempo si sono spostati verso il supporto ai fornitori di applicazioni che costruiscono flussi di lavoro finanziari pratici.

Le modifiche al protocollo e gli aggiornamenti rifletteranno le esigenze dei mercati regolamentati, adattandosi man mano che le istituzioni adottano la rete.

Conclusioni

Canton affronta una sfida fondamentale dei mercati finanziari: consentire ai sistemi di coordinarsi senza esporre più dati del necessario, combinando infrastruttura condivisa, visibilità controllata, regolamento prevedibile e governance distribuita.

Dato che un numero crescente di istituzioni, validatori e applicazioni adottano la rete, Canton sta passando dalla fase di progettazione e test all’utilizzo quotidiano, senza tentare di aggirare o sostituire la regolamentazione esistente, ma operando all’interno dei quadri normativi consolidati. In questo modo punta a fornire un’infrastruttura pratica per la finanza tokenizzata, basata su affidabilità, discrezione e neutralità, piuttosto che sulla speculazione.
