Prima di investire, raccomandiamo vivamente di condurre una ricerca approfondita. Questo è buona norma in ogni campo, soprattutto se si tratta di criptovalute. Seguire semplicemente le tendenze del mercato può essere rischioso, perché, come spesso si dice, è meglio non investire mai in qualcosa che non si capisce.

Per valutare il potenziale di un progetto di criptovaluta si possono utilizzare diversi indicatori. Alcuni sono più popolari di altri tra gli investitori, come TVL o TPS.

Di seguito presentiamo quattro metriche essenziali, spiegando perché ognuna di esse dovrebbe essere studiata attentamente prima di investire.

Total Value Locked (TVL)

Il Total Value Locked (TVL) rimane una delle metriche più utilizzate e citate nel settore delle criptovalute.

Quasi tutti i progetti di finanza decentralizzata (DeFi) mettono in evidenza il TVL come segnale di fiducia, liquidity e robustezza finanziaria. Il TVL rappresenta il valore totale degli asset digitali, come criptovalute, stablecoin, token di fornitori di liquidity e, in alcuni casi, NFT, che sono bloccati o in staking all’interno di un protocollo DeFi o di un’applicazione decentralizzata.

Attualmente Ethereum domina la classifica del TVL, con oltre 50 miliardi di dollari bloccati, rappresentando più della metà del mercato totale.

Tuttavia, sebbene il TVL misuri il valore bloccato in un protocollo, non indica necessariamente il coinvolgimento attivo dell’utenza.

Poiché è fortemente influenzato dai prezzi dei token, il TVL può fluttuare in modo significativo a causa della volatilità del mercato, anche quando l’attività degli utenti rimane invariata.

È inoltre importante sapere che i dati del TVL possono essere manipolati. Alcuni protocolli gonfiano artificialmente i propri numeri, conteggiando due volte gli asset: ad esempio, includendo sia i token depositati nelle piattaforme di liquid staking, sia i token di liquid staking ricevuti in cambio. Inoltre, il TVL può essere gonfiato da incentivi, forniti direttamente o indirettamente da fondazioni blockchain o da fornitori di liquidity strettamente associati al progetto.

TPS

Le transazioni al secondo (TPS) sono un parametro ampiamente utilizzato per valutare le prestazioni e la scalabilità delle reti blockchain. L’indice TPS misura il numero di transazioni che una blockchain può elaborare ogni secondo, fornendo un indicatore diretto della velocità della rete.

Tra le blockchain più veloci, spicca l’Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) con un TPS in tempo reale pari a 1.286.

In confronto, Bitcoin elabora circa 7 transazioni al secondo, una cifra relativamente bassa visto il suo utilizzo a livello globale. Tuttavia, anche se un TPS elevato viene spesso venduto come segno di superiorità tecnica, non necessariamente rende “migliore” una blockchain. La velocità può andare a scapito di altre proprietà cruciali come la decentralizzazione e la sicurezza: questo compromesso è comunemente definito il trilemma della blockchain, che prevede che nessuna blockchain possa ottimizzare contemporaneamente scalabilità, sicurezza e decentralizzazione.

È inoltre importante notare che i dati TPS possono essere fuorvianti. Molti progetti promuovono i loro massimi teorici, piuttosto che il rendimento effettivo in condizioni reali.

Inoltre, non tutte le transazioni sono uguali: i trasferimenti semplici richiedono molte meno risorse rispetto alle esecuzioni di smart contract complessi. E, nel caso di Bitcoin, più pagamenti possono essere raggruppati in un’unica transazione.

Sblocco dei token

Gli sblocchi dei token sono un fattore cruciale che gli investitori non dovrebbero trascurare. Molti hanno subito perdite semplicemente per una mancata comprensione di come funziona la maturazione dei token.

La maggior parte dei progetti di criptovalute implementa programmi di blocco o di maturazione per gestire la distribuzione dei token. Al momento del lancio, una parte significativa dei token viene generalmente bloccata per un determinato periodo di tempo, in modo da contribuire a stabilizzare il prezzo ed evitare svendite immediate.

Questi token vengono poi sbloccati gradualmente, consentendo spesso ai primi investitori, ai membri del team o ai consulenti di vendere le loro partecipazioni. Nella maggior parte dei casi, i token vengono rilasciati ogni mese per un periodo di 12 o 24 mesi. Alcuni progetti legano gli sblocchi a specifici traguardi o obiettivi di performance.

Lo sblocco di grandi quantità di token può creare un’ingente pressione di vendita, spingendo potenzialmente il prezzo del token verso il basso. Per questo motivo, gli investitori devono monitorare le informazioni chiave come la data di sblocco, il numero di token che verranno rilasciati, il loro equivalente in USD e la percentuale che rappresentano dell’attuale offerta in circolazione.

Questi indicatori possono essere consultati su siti web come CoinMarketCap, ad esempio. Essi forniscono una preziosa visione del potenziale impatto sul mercato.

Ricavi

I ricavi sono un parametro semplice per valutare il successo di un protocollo di criptovaluta.

Si calcolano moltiplicando le commissioni totali raccolte per la quota di compenso trattenuta dal protocollo, dopo aver tenuto conto di eventuali ripartizioni del distributore o di terzi. Questo dato fornisce agli investitori una chiara visione del reddito effettivo generato dal protocollo.

Le entrate derivanti dalle commissioni di transazione riflettono anche l’utilizzo attivo di una piattaforma e la sostenibilità del suo modello di business.

Nell’ultimo anno, due protocolli legati alle stablecoin hanno dominato il panorama dei ricavi delle criptovalute. Tether è stato il più performante, generando oltre 5,92 miliardi di dollari di entrate da commissioni, seguito da Circle con 1,67 miliardi di dollari e da Ethereum con 1,27 miliardi di dollari.

 

REV e MEV

Tuttavia, negli ultimi mesi è emersa una nuova metrica che ha guadagnato terreno tra gli investitori: il REV (Real Economic Value o valore economico reale).

Introdotto dal team di ricerca di Blockworks Research e originariamente applicato alla rete Solana, il REV tiene conto non solo delle commissioni di base per le transazioni, ma anche delle mance aggiuntive, come quelle pagate dagli utenti ai validatori per dare priorità alle transazioni.

Il termine REV fa riferimento al MEV (Miner Extractable Value), ovvero il valore aggiuntivo che i validatori possono ottenere riordinando le transazioni all’interno di un blocco.

Il MEV comprende sia comportamenti “tossici”, come il front running e gli attacchi sandwich che sottraggono valore agli utenti, sia pratiche “utili”, come l’arbitrage tra liquidazioni DEX o DeFi, che possono migliorare l’efficienza del mercato.

Includendo le entrate legate al MEV, come le mance Jito, il REV riconosce questi flussi come veri e propri indicatori della domanda di spazio di blocco, piuttosto che come effetti collaterali negativi.

Le mance Jito sono pagamenti effettuati da utenti o bot sulla rete Solana per incentivare i validatori a dare priorità alle proprie transazioni, spesso nel contesto di strategie MEV. Questi rappresentano un flusso di ricompense fuori protocollo, che contribuisce direttamente ai guadagni del validatore.

In quest’ottica, il MEV non è più visto solo come un difetto o una “tassa invisibile”, ma piuttosto come un flusso di entrate legittimo e misurabile. Il REV riformula il MEV come una metrica chiave delle prestazioni, segnalando un cambiamento nel modo di intendere l’economia dei protocolli.

Conclusioni: metriche per ogni caso d’uso

Le metriche devono sempre essere analizzate nel contesto, a seconda di ciò che si sta cercando di valutare.

Ogni investitore o analista deve adattare il proprio approccio in base al tipo di progetto o protocollo da valutare.

Oltre alle metriche comunemente citate, ce ne sono molte altre che vale la pena considerare, come i wallet address attivi, i tassi di inflazione dei token, l’attività degli sviluppatori, il numero di fork e altro ancora.

La chiave è concentrarsi sugli indicatori più rilevanti per il settore o il caso d’uso specifico di un progetto.

Ad esempio, nella DeFi e nei servizi finanziari, la velocità delle transazioni e la sicurezza sono essenziali per garantire pagamenti istantanei e affidabili. Al contrario, la scalabilità e i bassi costi di transazione sono più critici nel settore del gaming.
