Le fondamenta sono importanti

L’esecuzione e il mantenimento di un registro delle transazioni su Ethereum richiedono risorse di calcolo come la conservazione e la memoria, che hanno un costo. Lo scopo principale di ether, il token nativo del protocollo, è quello di pagarle.

La rete ha introdotto un’unità nota come GAS per stimare il costo di queste risorse. Ogni transazione comporta una tariffa GAS, che aumenta con il livello di risorse consumate. L’offerta di queste unità è intenzionalmente limitata per ridurre le barriere all’ingresso per gli operatori di rete e incoraggiare la decentralizzazione della rete. 

Tuttavia, la scarsità di unità GAS significa che Ethereum può regolare solo un numero limitato di transazioni in un dato momento. Può gestire circa 60 trasferimenti semplici di ether al secondo, ma un numero molto inferiore di transazioni più complesse, come le vendite di token non fungibili (NFT) o gli scambi su una borsa decentralizzata, come Uniswap.

Il prezzo del GAS stabilisce un tasso di scambio per le unità di GAS in ether. Le forze di mercato influenzano ampiamente questo tasso, aiutando a bilanciare la domanda di transazioni con la disponibilità limitata di GAS. Nel lungo periodo, il GAS viene consumato costantemente e il prezzo risponde alle variazioni della domanda. I valori del GAS e dell’ether sono volutamente distaccati perché il GAS rappresenta il costo delle risorse del mondo reale, mentre le forze di mercato dettano il valore dell’ether. Il prezzo del GAS dipende da quanto gli utenti sono disposti a spendere.

È ragionevole supporre che se Ethereum aumenta la sua utilità, il prezzo dell’ether aumenterà perché gli utenti saranno disposti a pagare di più per ogni transazione. Allo stesso modo, se il valore delle transazioni diminuisce, anche il prezzo dovrebbe adeguarsi, in quanto le forze concorrenziali prendono piede con le reti rivali.

Impatto dell’adozione sull’offerta di Ether

Alla fine del 2021, la Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 1559, ovvero una proposta di miglioramento di Ethereum, ha bloccato l’uso e il riutilizzo indefinito dei token. Le commissioni di transazione vengono invece “bruciate” (burned) o rimosse dalla circolazione. Nel frattempo, l’offerta di ether cresce grazie alle ricompense di staking pagate ai validatori nell’ambito del meccanismo di consenso “proof of stake” di Ethereum.  

Questi fattori determinano l’offerta di etere in un dato momento. Con l’aumento delle commissioni di transazione, l’offerta diminuisce, ma con l’aumento della quantità di ether “stakata”, aumenta anche l’emissione di nuovi token.

Il tasso di inflazione di ether è più sensibile alle variazioni del prezzo del GAS. Maggiore è la domanda di transazioni, più veloce è il burn rate delle commissioni pagate dagli utenti e maggiore è la pressione al ribasso sul tasso di inflazione. In caso di un periodo prolungato di elevato volume di transazioni, l’offerta di ether potrebbe diminuire significativamente ogni anno. 

Sebbene la tokenomics di Ethereum sia complessa, CoinShares basa le sue prospettive per il protocollo su una semplice tesi: la domanda di transazioni aumenterà parallelamente alla sua utilità. Gli utenti scelgono un’applicazione decentralizzata (dapp) di Ethereum invece di una costruita su una blockchain concorrente perché ritengono che offra un valore migliore per il loro denaro: è più veloce, più economica o più privata. 

Un’impennata della domanda di dollari USA per utilizzare Ethereum fa aumentare il prezzo del GAS, il valore dell’ether o una combinazione di entrambi. Per contestualizzare il tutto, immaginiamo che la rete attiri 10 miliardi di dollari in commissioni di transazione tra cinque anni. Ecco una spiegazione dei due estremi dello spettro di scenari presentati nella tabella sottostante: 

  • Se il prezzo del GAS aumenta e l’ether rimane invariato, gli utenti probabilmente spendono i token per le commissioni di transazione e poi lasciano l’ecosistema senza ricaricare i loro saldi. In questo caso, la circolazione diminuisce significativamente con l’esaurimento dei token, il che suggerisce che gli utenti non intendono detenere nuovamente ether o che gli operatori di mercato si aspettano che il suo prezzo scenda perché la domanda non compenserà la diminuzione dell’offerta.

  • Se il prezzo del GAS scende e l’ether sale, gli utenti spendono meno in commissioni di transazione mentre il mercato fa salire il token nativo. La circolazione aumenta a causa del calo dell’ether “bruciato”, suggerendo che il mercato ritiene che la domanda supererà l’offerta in aumento.

Il passato e il futuro della domanda di spazio nei blocchi

È cresciuta la domanda di blockspace, lo spazio finito all’interno di un blocco che le transazioni consumano. I catalizzatori di questa crescita sono diversi:

  • La ciclicità dei mercati delle criptovalute riflette gli halving del bitcoin, che avvengono ogni quattro anni, quando nuove narrazioni incuriosiscono gli estranei al settore e attirano la speculazione. 

  • Con la maturazione di Ethereum, la domanda degli utenti è aumentata grazie al suo successo nel differenziarsi dai rivali. 

  • I trasferimenti di ether sono stati superati da un’ampia gamma di dapp, lanciate in seguito all’espansione dell’utilità del protocollo.

Per soddisfare l’aumento della domanda e ridurre le commissioni, sono stati introdotti i Layer 2 (L2). Gli L2 competono con reti rivali più veloci o più economiche, mantenendo gli utenti all’interno del più ampio ecosistema Ethereum. Alcuni ritengono che saranno uno dei principali motori delle commissioni di transazione nei prossimi anni, ma il team di CoinShares non ne è convinto.

Dopo l’entrata in funzione dell’EIP-4844 nel marzo 2024, ogni blocco della catena Ethereum deve allocare uno spazio per le transazioni L2, chiamato “spazio blob”. I blob applicano tariffe basate sulla quantità di dati memorizzati piuttosto che sulle tariffe GAS, che consumano risorse più costose. Di conseguenza, le tariffe per le transazioni L2 sono molto più economiche e dovrebbero diminuire ulteriormente poiché Ethereum prevede di aumentare l’offerta di blob di venti o trenta volte. 

Sebbene le L2 permettano a Ethereum di competere con altri protocolli, non contribuiranno al volume delle transazioni elaborate sulla catena di base, quindi CoinShares non ritiene che possano far crescere il valore dell’ether.

Dal punto di vista dell’investitore, è più importante identificare quali servizi saranno probabilmente disposti a pagare per lo spazio dei blocchi di Ethereum L1 nel lungo termine. Quelli sufficientemente validi da sostenere la domanda di transazioni con le commissioni più alte, che aumentano l’appetito del mercato per l’ether o ne riducono la circolazione, contribuiranno a far prendere forma al caso di investimento fondamentale per il token nativo.
