Gli albori di Polkadot

Polkadot è stata ideata dal cofondatore di Ethereum, Gavin Wood, e ha lanciato la Relay Chain, la sua rete principale, a maggio 2020, dopo svariati anni di ricerca e reti di prova. Polkadot è stata progettata come rete Layer 0 che unisce diverse blockchain (dette parachain) sotto un unico sistema di sicurezza condiviso e fornisce un livello di messaggistica (XCM) per l’interoperabilità.

Lo sviluppo è guidato da Parity Technologies, co-fondata da Wood, e supervisionato dalla Web3 Foundation. Dopo tre anni di silenzio, ad agosto 2025 Gavin Wood ha annunciato il suo ritorno come CEO di Parity Technologies.

Caratteristiche tecniche principali

Polkadot utilizza un meccanismo di consenso Nominated Proof of Stake (NPoS), il che significa che i validatori mettono in staking DOT per produrre i blocchi sulla Relay Chain, mentre i nominatori delegano lo stake ai validatori. La Relay Chain si occupa della sicurezza e coordina il consenso per le parachain connesse, che possono definire le proprie regole. Le parachain comunicano attraverso un sistema di messaggistica chiamato Cross‑Consensus Messaging (XCM) e i messaggi possono essere trasmessi tramite bridge verso reti esterne.

Polkadot è creata per essere modulare. Gli sviluppatori utilizzano il Polkadot SDK per creare le proprie blockchain (parachain) e scegliere l’ambiente di programmazione e il modello di commissioni che preferiscono. A maggio 2025, la Web3 Foundation ha stretto una partnership con la società di infrastrutture Asphere per lanciare un toolkit che permette ai team di introdurre i propri rollup – catene leggere costruite sopra Polkadot – senza dover scrivere il codice di basso livello. Questi rollup possono essere personalizzati per diversi casi d’uso e persino trasferire le app Ethereum esistenti. Il kit fornisce modelli già pronti e si occupa delle attività impegnative come il consenso, la sicurezza e la gestione dei node, affinché i progetti possano implementare rapidamente catene ad alte prestazioni che sfruttano le funzionalità integrate di interoperabilità e sicurezza di Polkadot.

Polkadot sta attraversando un importante aggiornamento chiamato “Polkadot 2.0” che renderà la rete molto più flessibile. Oggi le singole parachain devono aggiudicarsi uno slot fisso per inserirsi nella catena centrale di Polkadot. Nel nuovo sistema, questi slot verranno sostituiti da “core” che gli sviluppatori potranno noleggiare a seconda delle necessità, un po’ come acquistare tempo di cloud computing. Il primo passo in questa direzione, ovvero la validazione asincrona delle transazioni, ha già dimezzato il tempo necessario per produrre un nuovo blocco – passato da 12 a 6 secondi – e permette a diverse parachain di elaborare le transazioni in simultanea, aumentando la velocità della rete.

Performance della rete

La velocità di Polkadot deriva dalla sua Relay Chain centrale, che lavora insieme a molte catene più piccole.  Immaginiamola come un computer con tanti core del processore in esecuzione contemporaneamente: distribuendo il lavoro su più core, Polkadot può gestire centinaia di migliaia di transazioni al secondo. Un recente aggiornamento riguardante la validazione asincrona delle transazioni ha dimezzato il tempo necessario per aggiungere un nuovo gruppo di transazioni, ora intorno ai sei secondi, in modo che le conferme avvengano più velocemente.  L’affidabilità della rete dipende da un gruppo numeroso di validatori indipendenti (circa 300) che si alternano nella produzione dei blocchi e guadagnano delle ricompense per rimanere online; se troppi si disconnettono, le performance possono calare, ma il sistema di staking è progettato per mantenerli impegnati.

A livello teorico, la Relay Chain è in grado di gestire 100.000 transazioni al secondo (TPS) ma, al Consensus 2025 di Toronto, la Web3 Foundation ha dichiarato di poter persino raggiungere oltre 623.000 TPS. Secondo Chainspect, ad agosto 2025 la blockchain elaborava circa 8 TPS, con un massimo registrato di 462 TPS.

A cosa serve Polkadot?

DOT è il token nativo di Polkadot, il quale ha quattro funzioni principali:

  • Commissioni di transazione: i token DOT sono utilizzati per pagare le commissioni per i messaggi e le transazioni sulla Relay Chain, per poi essere bruciati o trasferiti al tesoro.

  • Staking: i validatori devono mettere in staking DOT per partecipare alla produzione dei blocchi, mentre i nominatori lo fanno per selezionare i validatori.  Le ricompense di staking provengono dall’inflazione e dalle commissioni di transazione.

  • Governance: i detentori di DOT partecipano a referendum per prendere decisioni che riguardano gli aggiornamenti del protocollo, la spesa del tesoro e il cambiamento dei parametri. Nell’era di Polkadot 2.0, la governance on-chain acquisirà una maggiore autonomia.

  • Acquisto di coretime e garanzia: con l’introduzione dell’Agile Coretime, gli sviluppatori utilizzeranno DOT per acquistare tempo di core e proteggere rollup o parachain.

Ecosistema e casi d’uso

Polkadot supporta un ecosistema in crescita di dApp e parachain specializzate.  Secondo un comunicato stampa della Web3 Foundation, a maggio 2025 la rete ospitava oltre 600 progetti attivi e più di 1,4 milioni di partecipanti nelle sue DAO on-chain. Le parachain comprendono DeFi (Hydration, Bifrost, Moonwell), gaming (Mythical Games, Unique Network), NFT, identità digitali e il tracciamento di asset reali.

Il design cross‑chain permette alle parachain di connettersi alle catene EVM attraverso bridge e a Cosmos attraverso le implementazioni Hyperbridge e IBC. Le parachain possono inoltre lanciare i propri rollup.

Pro e contro

Pro

  • Le parachain possono scalare in modo indipendente e condividere la sicurezza, mentre la futura scalabilità elastica permetterà un’allocazione dinamica delle risorse.

  • I bridge verso Ethereum e Cosmos, uniti ai rollup senza codice, favoriscono le dApp cross-chain.

  • I detentori di DOT controllano gli aggiornamenti del protocollo e la spesa del tesoro.

Contro

  • L’architettura di Polkadot (Relay Chain, parachain, futuri core) è più complessa rispetto a quella delle reti a catena singola.

  • Sebbene ci siano centinaia di progetti, la liquidity e il Total Value Locked della DeFi di Polkadot rimangono modesti rispetto a Ethereum e Solana.  Molte delle principali stablecoin (USDT, USDC) non sono emesse in maniera nativa su Polkadot, riducendo l’efficienza del capitale.

  • Altre reti modulari (Cosmos, ICP) e i rollup Layer 2 di Ethereum offrono scalabilità e interoperabilità simili, pertanto Polkadot deve competere per sviluppatori e liquidity.

Considerazioni strategiche

Polkadot si propone come rete Layer 0 incentrata sulle applicazioni che fornisce un’infrastruttura sicura e scalabile per un’ampia gamma di blockchain.  In sostanza, dovremmo considerare Polkadot una blockchain B2B, non una indirizzata ai consumatori. A investitori e costruttori, DOT offre esposizione a una piattaforma multichain modulare.  Anziché competere direttamente con Bitcoin ed Ethereum, Polkadot serve a completarle: Bitcoin rimane un asset monetario, Ethereum un punto di riferimento per gli smart contract con una DeFi matura, mentre Polkadot offre spazio per i blocchi personalizzabile e comunicazione tra le catene.  L’offerta inflazionistica di DOT finanzia le ricompense di staking e una tesoreria che investe negli aggiornamenti della rete. I futuri investitori dovrebbero soppesare il potenziale di Polkadot 2.0 e la crescita del suo ecosistema.
