Quando Satoshi Nakamoto lanciò Bitcoin nel 2009, l’innovazione introdusse una forma radicale di trasparenza nella finanza globale. Ogni transazione, ogni moneta, ogni blocco è verificabile pubblicamente e visibile in tempo reale. Nessun tipo di asset ha mai offerto un registro così aperto. Si è trattato di una netta rottura con i sistemi tradizionali, come quello dell’oro, in cui la reale offerta in circolazione è soggetta a stime e intermediari. Ma oggi riaffiorano delle domande: stiamo assistendo all’ascesa del “bitcoin cartaceo”, una versione sintetica dell’asset che minaccia la trasparenza stessa su cui è stato costruito Bitcoin?

Oro cartaceo: un’analogia

Per comprendere questa preoccupazione, dobbiamo ripercorrere la storia dell’“oro cartaceo”. Nato con i diritti speciali di prelievo negli anni ’60, il termine si riferisce ora a prodotti finanziari che offrono esposizione all’oro senza richiederne il possesso fisico. Tra questi figurano ETF, contratti futures e azioni di società minerarie aurifere. Pur essendo convenienti e liquidi, questi strumenti introducevano rischi di controparte e rendevano opaca la quantità di oro fisico effettivamente investita.

Nel corso del tempo, la maggior parte delle negoziazioni di oro si è spostata su mercati over-the-counter poco trasparenti, in particolare a Londra. Secondo il Consiglio Mondiale dell’Oro, oltre il 70% delle negoziazioni di oro all’ingrosso avviene fuori borsa, con una scarsa visibilità pubblica. E, a differenza del limite massimo di 21 milioni di bitcoin, l’offerta totale di oro, inclusa quella ancora presente nel sottosuolo, rimane speculativa.

Bitcoin cartaceo: una preoccupazione crescente

Bitcoin, che viene spesso soprannominato “oro digitale”, sta adottando strutture finanziarie sempre più simili: futures, opzioni, ETF e meccanismi di esposizione basati sulla custodia. Sebbene questi strumenti offrano un accesso più ampio, possono anche separare gli investitori dall’asset sottostante, soprattutto se gli emittenti non sono completamente trasparenti.

Il termine “bitcoin cartaceo” ha guadagnato terreno con l’emergere delle accuse a settembre 2024. Coinbase, custode di diversi ETF su Bitcoin, tra cui l’iShares Bitcoin Trust di BlackRock, è stata accusata di aver emesso delle cambiali (IOU) invece di detenere bitcoin reali. Sebbene il CEO di Coinbase Brian Armstrong abbia negato queste accuse e Adam Back le abbia pubblicamente smentite, l’evento ha suscitato preoccupazioni in tutto il settore.

L’ipotesi di “bitcoin cartaceo” ha guadagnato terreno sui canali social, spesso per via della percezione che sia anomalo che il prezzo di bitcoin rimanga in un range ristretto, nonostante il crescente numero di società con tesoreria in bitcoin e la rapida espansione degli ETF su Bitcoin. Secondo questa visione, una maggiore esposizione istituzionale dovrebbe tradursi direttamente in un più forte slancio al rialzo dei prezzi.

Tuttavia, questa ipotesi è errata, poiché le dinamiche di offerta di bitcoin sono governate da meccanismi complessi: l’andamento del prezzo non è determinato esclusivamente dagli afflussi negli ETF o dalle allocazioni di bilancio. Dipende anche da fattori quali la liquidity del mercato, il posizionamento sui derivati, l’umore di mercato macroeconomico, il comportamento dei miner e l’attività dei detentori a lungo termine. Inoltre, non tutti gli afflussi in ETF si traducono in singoli acquisti immediati: alcuni emittenti coprono l’esposizione utilizzando futures o si affidano a strutture interne di market making, il che può attenuare l’impatto atteso sul prezzo.

Comprendere la struttura del mercato di bitcoin richiede di guardare oltre i flussi principali e considerare l’interazione stratificata tra mercati spot, dei derivati e di custodia.

Paper gold vs paper bitcoin: a market comparisonTuttavia, se il “bitcoin cartaceo” prolifera senza una verifica solida, rischiamo di tornare a un mondo in cui gli attori di mercato non possono verificare con sicurezza se gli asset sono garantiti 1:1, il che contraddirebbe l’etica fondante di Bitcoin.

Proof of Reserves: strumento utile o illusione?

Dopo il crollo di FTX nel 2022, il settore ha promosso il Proof of Reserves (PoR) come misura di salvaguardia. Nella migliore delle ipotesi, la PoR conferma che un’azienda detiene gli asset che dichiara di detenere, idealmente a fronte delle passività. Ma il Proof of Reserves può anche essere una cortina di fumo, poiché

le riserve possono essere temporaneamente gonfiate prima delle verifiche e non esistono standard di settore per certificare adeguatamente il meccanismo di prova. Prendiamo le piattaforme di criptovalute: a meno che un utente non sia in grado di verificarne i depositi sul suo indirizzo in tempo reale, l’uso di riserve frazionarie potrebbe essere una realtà. Anche i prelievi ritardati costituiscono un segnale d’allarme.

Quando si tratta di società con tesoreria in Bitcoin quotate in borsa, si potrebbe obiettare che, al momento della stesura di questo articolo, nessuna di loro – Metaplanet a parte – fornisca un modo per verificare in modo indipendente le loro partecipazioni.

È importante sottolineare che in Europa gli emittenti di ETP come CoinShares sono soggetti a normative finanziarie preesistenti (tra cui la Direttiva MiFID e il Regolamento sui Prospetti) e agli obblighi di dichiarazione imposti dalle sedi di quotazione. CoinShares ha inoltre stretto una partnership con una società indipendente, The Network Firm, che utilizza la tecnologia blockchain per verificare in tempo reale le partecipazioni in criptovalute e pubblica report di attestazione giornalieri.

La confutazione di Adam Back

Quando scoppiò il pandemonio di voci del settembre 2024, Adam Back, pioniere di Bitcoin, replicò prontamente, affermando che non ci fossero prove che Coinbase avesse emesso cambiali senza garanzie. Il suo commento servì da monito: lo scetticismo deve essere basato sui dati, non sui social media. Ma la paura ha confermato un punto importante: la percezione conta quanto i fatti quando si tratta di fiducia del mercato.

Tuttavia, tutte le voci che circolano su internet e sui social media dovrebbero essere prese con le pinze. Nel 2024, l’analista di ETF di Bloomberg Eric Balchunas sottolineò che, dopo aver seguito il settore “per 20 anni, non c’è mai stato un caso in cui l’asset sottostante non fosse in possesso del custode”.

Inoltre, è importante ricordare che rivelare i propri investimenti è più complesso della semplice visualizzazione di un indirizzo pubblico, soprattutto perché ciò espone l’indirizzo ad attacchi spam come il “dusting”, una tattica con cui malintenzionati inviano asset a vari indirizzi senza consenso. Questi asset possono, ad esempio, essere contaminati.

Conclusioni: difendere il registro

Eppure, Bitcoin offre qualcosa che nessun altro asset può offrire, che è la piena trasparenza. Questa promessa è, però, a rischio se permettiamo all’ingegneria finanziaria di prevalere sulla verifica. Gli investitori dovrebbero pretendere più della semplice comodità, dovrebbero pretendere la certezza crittografica.

La minaccia del “bitcoin cartaceo” è reale, ma evitabile. Responsabilizzando le istituzioni, promuovendo le migliori pratiche e adottando gli strumenti offerti dalla blockchain, possiamo garantire che Bitcoin rimanga ciò che è sempre stato concepito per essere: un protocollo affidabile, verificabile e radicalmente trasparente.
