“Chiaramente inutile”, “senza alcun valore”, un “fiasco”… Nonostante una traiettoria di 16 anni e aver raggiunto una capitalizzazione di mercato di 3.000 miliardi di dollari, Bitcoin e le criptovalute continuano a ricever critiche sul loro effettivo valore al di là di quello speculativo. Se è pur vero che questi asset sono altamente volatili a causa del mercato relativamente giovane che hanno creato, i loro usi sono numerosi e tangibili.

Sovranità economica

Il sistema economico di ogni Stato si basa su una banca centrale. La Svezia non fa di certo eccezione. Sebbene questa sia la norma, ha i suoi difetti. La politica monetaria influisce direttamente sulla vita quotidiana dei cittadini, spesso svalutando la moneta nazionale, come la corona svedese. Ad esempio, il tasso di inflazione della Svezia tra il 2020 e il 2025 è stato del 24%, il che significa che nel 2025 saranno necessarie 124 corone per avere lo stesso valore di 100 corone di cinque anni prima.

Nello stesso periodo, Bitcoin ha costantemente dimostrato la sua capacità di superare l’inflazione, superando persino l’oro come bene rifugio. E parlando di oro, nonostante sia considerato uno dei migliori asset a livello globale, Bitcoin lo supera in termini di portabilità, divisibilità e verificabilità. Queste qualità rendono Bitcoin resistente alla censura, offrendo ai cittadini una singolare forma di libertà contro azioni di governo potenzialmente dannose.

Potenziamento finanziario

La resistenza alla censura non è solamente uno stratagemma, ma permette anche a chiunque di trasferire valore senza intermediari. Grazie alla tecnologia blockchain, gli utenti sono in grado di effettuare transazioni istantanee e a basso costo in tutto il mondo. In Svezia, dove la maggior parte dei pagamenti ora avviene senza contanti, la necessità di uno strumento di pagamento digitale e trustless (ossia, senza intermediari) è ora più forte che mai.

Soprattutto, gli asset digitali consentono una vera proprietà e accessibilità al denaro. Uno studio del Servizio informazioni del Consiglio nordico dei ministri dello scorso anno ha rivelato che alcune banche svedesi rendono difficile a stranieri e cittadini di Paesi terzi l’apertura di un conto o l’acquisto di una casa. Bitcoin è la soluzione a questo problema.

Un’alternativa ai servizi finanziari tradizionali

La criptovaluta non è solo uno strumento per gli attori dei mercati emergenti, ma ha dimostrato da sempre il potenziale per migliorare i portafogli finanziari grazie alla sua bassa correlazione, anche nei casi di quelli più conservativi. Ad esempio, una modesta allocazione del 4%, ribilanciata ogni trimestre, in un portafoglio bilanciato (60% azioni e 40% obbligazioni), nel periodo compreso tra ottobre 2015 e agosto 2024 avrebbe potuto migliorare il rendimento annuo dal 9,3% al 18,8%, aumentando solo leggermente il rischio associato a questa allocazione.

Inoltre, la tecnologia blockchain offre accesso a strumenti finanziari innovativi che generano rendimenti significativi. Le piattaforme DeFi (finanza decentralizzata), ad esempio, consentono agli utenti di dare in prestito i propri beni digitali. Queste piattaforme possono offrire un rendimento percentuale annuo che varia dal 5 al 15%, con accesso ai fondi senza intermediari e tutti i giorni 24 ore su 24.

Il caso d’uso delle rimesse

Nei Paesi sviluppati, le infrastrutture finanziarie sono facilmente accessibili, ma nei Paesi in via di sviluppo la mancanza di accesso alle banche rimane un problema critico. Secondo la Banca Mondiale, oltre 1,4 miliardi di persone in tutto il mondo non hanno accesso ai servizi bancari. Questo divario va a vantaggio dell’avidità degli intermediari: ad esempio, oggi il costo medio delle rimesse è pari al 6,2% dell’importo inviato.

Prendiamo il Kenya come esempio. Nel 2023, il Paese ha registrato 4,2 miliardi di dollari di rimesse. Al costo attuale delle rimesse, gli intermediari hanno intascato 260,4 milioni di dollari in commissioni, un onere significativo per una popolazione che ha un reddito medio mensile di 590 dollari.

Le criptovalute, in particolare le stablecoin (asset digitali legati alle valute fiat), si stanno rivelando un’ancora di salvezza in queste situazioni. Uno studio di Castle Ventures VC ha evidenziato il boom dell’uso delle stablecoin basate sul dollaro nei mercati emergenti, soprattutto per gli invii di denaro internazionali e per l’autodeposito dei risparmi.

 Le reti blockchain come Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon e Tron (tutte soluzioni di scalabilità di Ethereum) consentono di effettuare transazioni per pochi centesimi. Si tratta di un enorme miglioramento rispetto alle tradizionali commissioni di invio di denaro e dimostra come le criptovalute possano offrire soluzioni reali in un mondo senza accesso all’infrastruttura bancaria.

Le basi di una nuova economia 

L’opacità della finanza tradizionale è stata a lungo un problema: una mancanza di trasparenza che la tecnologia blockchain risolve data la sua natura aperta e verificabile. Grazie a queste caratteristiche, le criptovalute sono il motore della creazione di un nuovo paradigma: la finanza aperta.

L’accesso al capitale o l’esposizione alle aziende adesso può essere effettuato da chiunque, mediante l’emissione di titoli o token di utilità, consentendo ai risparmiatori di sostenere l’imprenditoria in modo diretto, sia a livello locale che globale. In casi come le DAO (dalla sigla inglese che sta per organizzazioni autonome decentralizzate), i detentori di token ottengono diritti di governance e decisione, riducendo la gerarchia delle strutture tradizionali.

Allo stesso modo, l’apertura delle blockchain e la semplicità dell’emissione di token riducono i costi normativi e istituzionali, abbattendo le barriere all’ingresso.

L’Internet del denaro

In un mondo globalizzato, non si può negare la necessità di un livello di regolamento finanziario affidabile. In questa nuova realtà – che fa già parte del nostro presente – le blockchain consentono a persone di tutto il mondo di comunicare e di effettuare transazioni in modo sicuro e quasi istantaneo. Si tratta di un miglioramento significativo rispetto all’epoca dei costosi bonifici bancari, quando solo gli investitori accreditati avevano accesso agli strumenti finanziari più interessanti.
