Morpho, la piattaforma che sta conquistando la DeFi

Morpho è emersa rapidamente come uno dei nuovi grandi nomi nell’ecosistema delle criptovalute, dimostrando che Aave non è più l’unico protocollo di credito di successo nel settore. In meno di cinque anni, Morpho è diventata una delle infrastrutture chiave per i prestiti della DeFi, e attualmente collabora con diversi leader del settore.

Costruita su Ethereum, Morpho offre un’infrastruttura senza permessi, senza custodia e personalizzabile per i prestiti on-chain, consentendo agli utenti di ottenere rendimenti, prendere in prestito asset e creare mercati di prestito su misura con flessibilità e sicurezza.

A differenza dei protocolli tradizionali basati su pool, Morpho utilizza un motore di abbinamento ottimizzato che associa direttamente prestatori e mutuatari quando possibile, con l’obiettivo di migliorare i tassi per entrambe le parti. Qualora non sia possibile realizzare un abbinamento, i fondi degli utenti vengono reindirizzati a un pool base di prestiti, garantendo così liquidity continua e un comportamento prevedibile anche in mercati volatili. Questo concetto ibrido rappresenta uno dei punti di forza di Morpho, poiché combina efficienza, trasparenza e facile integrazione con la liquidity DeFi esistente.

Attualmente, Morpho rappresenta il secondo protocollo di prestiti al mondo, con oltre 6,68 miliardi di dollari in TVL, ed è ormai considerata una delle realtà più influenti nel prestito decentralizzato all’interno del più ampio panorama DeFi.

Come tutto è iniziato

Morpho è stata fondata nell’agosto 2021 a Parigi da tre studenti: Paul Frambot, Mathis Gontier Delaunay e Merlin Egalité.

Durante gli studi, Paul Frambot ha seguito corsi sulla blockchain presso Télécom Paris e l’Institut Polytechnique, tenuti da Vincent Danos, direttore di ricerca al CNRS. Affascinato dall’idea che la blockchain potesse eliminare gli intermediari nella finanza, Frambot ha trascorso mesi a discutere questi concetti con il suo professore. Da quelle conversazioni è poi nato il progetto Morpho.

“Si tratta di un cambiamento radicale nei modelli di business rispetto alla finanza tradizionale. Contributori come Morpho Labs non vengono pagati per gestire un servizio finanziario, ma per aiutare a migliorarlo. I benefici sociali della blockchain sono ancora in gran parte sconosciuti, eppure sono enormi”, ha dichiarato Frambot ad ActuIA nel 2022.

Ben presto, l’idea ha attirato investitori: il team ha raccolto 1,2 milioni di euro alla fine del 2021, seguiti da un round da 18 milioni di dollari nel luglio del 2022 guidato dai prestigiosi fondi di venture capital a16z Crypto e Variant. Hanno partecipato quasi cento investitori, tra cui Coinbase Ventures e fondi francesi come Alven e XAnge.

Morpho è stata lanciata sulla mainnet il 20 dicembre 2022 e ha raccolto finora oltre 69 milioni di dollari, con l’ultimo round di finanziamenti conclusosi nell’agosto 2024.

Il token MORPHO

Il token MORPHO è stato lanciato sulla rete Ethereum il 21 novembre 2024. La sua offerta è limitata a 1 miliardo di unità, con 358,3 milioni di token in circolazione al 18 novembre 2025, pari a circa il 36% dell’offerta totale.

La sua funzione principale è quella di token di governance, che consente ai possessori di votare sulle decisioni relative al protocollo, ai suoi futuri aggiornamenti e alla gestione della tesoreria. Per presentare una proposta è richiesta una soglia di 500.000 token: in questo modo si garantisce che le iniziative provengano da partecipanti fortemente coinvolti nell’ecosistema.

Inoltre, il token viene utilizzato per ricompensare gli utenti che partecipano alle attività di prestito sulla piattaforma.

La tokenomics è progettata per sostenere lo sviluppo del protocollo, con il 35,40% dei token assegnato alla tesoreria della Morpho DAO e il 6,30% alla Morpho Association, mentre i fondatori detengono solo il 15,20% dell’offerta.

Chi lo utilizza

Morpho è diventata un’infrastruttura chiave per i prodotti di prestito in tutta l’industria delle criptovalute, alimentando servizi per grandi exchange, piattaforme di pagamento e persino istituzioni finanziarie regolamentate.

Invece di interagire direttamente con Morpho, la maggior parte degli utenti vi accede tramite interfacce familiari rivolte al consumatore, un modello spesso descritto come “DeFi Mullet”, in cui le piattaforme centralizzate si trovano in primo piano mentre l’infrastruttura decentralizzata opera dietro le quinte.

Una delle integrazioni più rilevanti è quella con Coinbase, che a gennaio ha lanciato prestiti on-chain garantiti da Bitcoin sulla rete Base utilizzando Morpho. Attraverso questo prodotto, gli utenti possono prendere in prestito USDC depositando Bitcoin come garanzia. Il 20 novembre Coinbase ha inoltre annunciato l’aggiunta di prestiti garantiti da Ethereum, con limiti di finanziamento fino a 1 milione di dollari.

Anche Crypto.com sta integrando Morpho nel proprio ecosistema. In collaborazione con la rete Cronos, i due team si preparano a lanciare nuovi mercati di prestiti in stablecoin garantiti da versioni wrapped di Bitcoin ed Ethereum sulla chain Cronos, con l’introduzione prevista entro la fine dell’anno. I due stanno inoltre esplorando l’uso di asset reali wrapped come garanzia, un ulteriore passo verso l’integrazione tra asset tradizionali e liquidity DeFi.

L’espansione di Morpho ora tocca anche la finanza tradizionale. A fine settembre, infatti, Société Générale (tramite la sua controllata per gli asset digitali SG-FORGE) ha annunciato l’integrazione delle proprie stablecoin conformi al regolamento MiCA (EURCV e USDCV) in Morpho. Questa mossa potrebbe consentire ai clienti istituzionali di accedere ai mercati di prestiti on-chain utilizzando come garanzia un paniere di cripto-asset e fondi tokenizzati. Si tratta di uno dei primi casi in cui una grande banca europea utilizza su larga scala un protocollo di prestiti DeFi aperto.

Rischi e prospettive

Come ogni protocollo, Morpho rimane esposto a tentativi di sfruttamento e a incidenti di sicurezza. Nell’aprile 2025 il protocollo ha subito un tentativo di sfruttamento da 2,6 milioni di dollari legato a una vulnerabilità del frontend. L’attacco è stato bloccato in tempo reale dall’hacker white hat e operatore MEV c0ffeebabe.eth, che ha intercettato la transazione malevola prima che venissero sottratti fondi.

Ancora più preoccupante per alcuni osservatori è stato il recente riemergere di timori sulla liquidity, dopo che sono stati rilevati ammanchi temporanei in alcuni caveau.

Il cofondatore Merlin Egalité ha affrontato la questione in un post su X pubblicato il 6 novembre, spiegando che questi episodi rappresentano una reazione prevedibile allo stress di mercato piuttosto che una debolezza strutturale. Quando i prestatori prelevano i fondi simultaneamente e l’utilizzo raggiunge il 100%, il modello dei tassi di interesse di Morpho aumenta automaticamente i costi di prestito per ristabilire l’equilibrio. La maggior parte dei mercati torna normalmente alla normalità nel giro di pochi minuti, anche se periodi di forte volatilità possono rallentare il processo. Secondo Egalité, solo tre o quattro degli oltre 320 caveau di Morpho sono stati interessati da questi brevi episodi, e nessuno ha causato perdite o crediti inesigibili.

Guardando al futuro, restano aperte diverse questioni, in particolare sul ruolo di lungo periodo del token MORPHO. Al momento, la sua utilità è principalmente legata alla governance, mentre la maggior parte delle integrazioni istituzionali utilizza Morpho come infrastruttura di backend senza richiedere l’uso del token.
