Ethereum è stato lanciato nel 2015 come protocollo “proof of work”, simile al bitcoin, che richiede ai miner di risolvere complessi problemi matematici per convalidare le transazioni. Tuttavia, è passato a un meccanismo di consenso “proof of stake” nel settembre 2022, un evento molto atteso soprannominato The Merge.

Ethereum si affida ai validatori invece che ai miner. Il protocollo seleziona casualmente un validatore per creare un nuovo blocco di transazioni e altri per attestare (confermare) che il blocco è valido. Per partecipare, i validatori devono bloccare o “stakare” un minimo di 32 ether (del valore di 75.990 $ al 5 settembre 2024) in un contratto intelligente. Più alto è lo stake, maggiore è la possibilità di essere selezionati. Staking pool come Rocket Pool consentono a coloro che non possono raggiungere questa soglia di contribuire alla governance del protocollo. 

In cambio, i validatori ricevono “ricompense del blocco” sotto forma di ether, il token nativo di Ethereum. Il protocollo penalizza anche i comportamenti scorretti, come la mancata convalida delle transazioni o l’attestazione di blocchi non validi, confiscando una parte della partecipazione del validatore (un meccanismo noto come slashing). 

Questo articolo esplora le fonti delle ricompense del blocco e stima il rendimento potenziale, in termini di tasso percentuale annuo, che gli staker possono aspettarsi di guadagnare.

Fonti di ricompense

Ethereum paga ricompense per compiti legati al consenso e all’esecuzione di transazioni.

Ricompense per il consenso

Alla fine di ogni “epoch”, un periodo di sei minuti durante il quale vengono proposti e attestati blocchi di transazioni, il protocollo premia o penalizza i validatori in base al loro comportamento.

  • Ricompense per i Proposer: i Proposer sono validatori selezionati a caso che guadagnano ricompense per aver proposto il blocco successivo nella catena.

  • Ricompense per gli Attester: gli Attester sono validatori che votano per approvare i blocchi proposti e i checkpoint (alla fine di ogni epoch) quando le transazioni diventano immutabili. Poiché il protocollo seleziona ogni validatore per attestare una volta per epoch, queste ricompense sono pagate più frequentemente e rappresentano la maggior parte dei rendimenti guadagnati dai validatori. 

  • Comitato di sincronizzazione: dopo che sono trascorse 256 epoch (circa 27 ore), il protocollo seleziona i validatori per unirsi al comitato di sincronizzazione, che è responsabile di assicurare che tutti i nodi (entità che eseguono il software di Ethereum) abbiano l’ultima versione della blockchain. Sebbene queste ricompense siano relativamente elevate, i validatori le guadagnano di rado, quindi contribuiscono meno ai rendimenti complessivi.

Dato che le ricompense dei Proposer e dei comitati di sincronizzazione sono più casuali di quelle degli Attester, il loro valore per gli staker è tipicamente soggetto a fluttuazioni nel breve termine. Tuttavia, nel lungo periodo, dovrebbe essere uniforme.

Ricompense per l’esecuzione

Anche le ricompense pagate per le attività di esecuzione sono variabili e dipendono in gran parte dalla domanda di spazio nei blocchi (detto “blockspace”), ovvero il numero di transazioni che ogni blocco della catena Ethereum può contenere. 

  • Mance (o “tips”): gli utenti possono pagare mance in aggiunta alle loro commissioni di transazione, note come commissioni gas, per incoraggiare i validatori a includere la loro transazione nel blocco successivo.

  • Valore massimo estraibile (MEV): i validatori possono guadagnare MEV per includere, escludere o riordinare le transazioni nei blocchi che creano. Le terze parti, chiamate “searchers”, identificano la maggior parte delle opportunità MEV e pagano commissioni gas più elevate, che condividono con i validatori. Ecco alcuni esempi di queste opportunità: 

    • Front running: il searcher identifica un’operazione redditizia prima dell’esecuzione e invia il proprio ordine per primo con una commissione gas più elevata. 

    • Arbitraggio: se due exchange decentralizzati (DEX) quotano lo stesso token a prezzi diversi, il searcher può acquistare quello più economico e venderlo sull’altro DEX.

    • Liquidazione: i mutuatari (detti “borrowers”) devono pagare una commissione di liquidazione se il valore delle loro garanzie fluttua e l’intermediario deve venderle per rimborsare i prestatori. I searchers monitorano i DEX e richiedono questa commissione essendo i primi a elaborare la transazione.

Rendimenti con lo staking di ETH

Le ricompense per l’esecuzione sono direttamente proporzionali al numero di transazioni sul protocollo: maggiore è il volume, maggiori sono le mance e le opportunità di MEV. Detto questo, le ricompense MEV sono disponibili solo per i validatori che utilizzano il software MEV-Boost, che consente loro di esternalizzare la creazione dei blocchi. Attualmente, l’89% dei validatori utilizza questo software, una percentuale in costante aumento. Al contrario, le ricompense per il consenso sono inversamente correlate al volume di ether “stakati” sul protocollo.

Di seguito mostriamo un modello con uno spaccato dei rendimenti con lo staking di ETH nell’attuale contesto di mercato. L’emissione rappresenta tutte le ricompense per il consenso, mentre le ricompense per l’esecuzione sono costituite da mance e MEV:

La domanda di spazio per i blocchi di Ethereum è a livelli storicamente bassi dopo che l’aggiornamento Dencun ha ridotto le commissioni sui Layer 2 (catene che elaborano le transazioni per conto del protocollo originale per superare le carenze) fino a 100 volte. Se da un lato questo risultato suggerisce che l’aggiornamento è stato un grande successo, dall’altro la quantità di ether rimossa dalla circolazione dopo essere stata utilizzata per le commissioni di transazione, nota come burn rate, è diminuita e ha gonfiato l’offerta complessiva.

Sulla base dei dati storici, CoinShares prevede che 320.000 validatori si uniranno alla rete nel corso del prossimo anno, il che fisserebbe il tasso percentuale annuo (APR) guadagnato dagli staker a circa il 2,8%. Detto questo, la comunità di Ethereum ha recentemente iniziato a discutere la modifica del tasso di emissione di nuovo ether da parte del protocollo, che potrebbe influire sull’APR.

Il rendimento dell’ether non si limita a fornire agli investitori un confronto con altri protocolli, ma stabilisce anche una soglia minima per i tassi di prestito offerti dalle applicazioni finanziarie decentralizzate (dapp). I prestiti sono più rischiosi dello staking, quindi le dapp sono riluttanti a fissare tassi di interesse inferiori al rendimento. Dopotutto, se questi tassi sono più bassi, gli investitori potrebbero prendere in prestito dalle dapp e “stakare” i fondi, guadagnando un rendimento dalla differenza.  

Conclusioni

CoinShares si aspetta che il rendimento di Ethereum diminuisca nel tempo, man mano che i validatori “stakano” più ether. Data l’attuale bassa domanda di spazio nei blocchi, è probabile che le ricompense per l’esecuzione rappresentino l’80% dei rendimenti.
