Gli albori di Cosmos

Cosmos è spesso definita l’”internet delle blockchain”. La sua rete principale, Cosmos Hub, è stata lanciata a marzo 2019 ed è stata costruita da Tendermint Inc. (oggi Ignite) e dalla Interchain Foundation (ICF). I fondatori di Cosmos, Jae Kwon, Zarko Milosevic ed Ethan Buchman, volevano creare una rete che risolvesse la mancanza di interoperabilità tra le blockchain.

Lo scopo dell’Hub è quello di fungere da modello per il lancio di blockchain personalizzabili (dette “zone”) in grado di comunicare tramite il protocollo Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC). Questo design permette agli sviluppatori di costruire reti specializzate, come quelle per gli scambi decentralizzati o i marketplace per i token non fungibili (NFT), pur continuando a connettersi a un ecosistema più ampio.

A dicembre 2024, l’ICF ha acquisito Skip e creato Interchain Inc., riunendo sotto lo stesso tetto lo sviluppo del prodotto e la strategia. Questa centralizzazione mira a risolvere i problemi legati alla frammentazione e alla liquidity che affliggevano l’ecosistema.

Caratteristiche tecniche principali

Ciascuna “zona” costruita con il Cosmos SDK è autonoma, ma può operare con le altre attraverso il protocollo Inter‑Blockchain Communication (IBC).  Connettendo tra loro delle catene altrimenti isolate, Cosmos riduce la congestione delle reti monolitiche e permette agli sviluppatori di costruire catene specializzate per casi d’uso legati alla DeFi, il gaming, l’infrastruttura o le aziende.  All’interno dell’Interchain operano ora oltre 100 blockchain indipendenti.

L’Hub utilizza un meccanismo di consenso Proof of Stake chiamato CometBFT (in precedenza Tendermint) e funge da modello per la creazione di blockchain per applicazioni specifiche. L’architettura di Cosmos unisce un consenso rapido, la modularità e una sicurezza cross-chain. Il meccanismo di consenso CometBFT permette ai validatori di raggiungere un accordo con finalizzazione immediata e un throughput elevato, mentre il Cosmos SDK consente agli sviluppatori di collegare moduli per governance, staking e account.

La governance e il finanziamento sono, pertanto, decentralizzati: l’ICF, con sede in Svizzera, supervisiona le sovvenzioni e la ricerca a lungo termine, mentre il mantenimento del software e lo sviluppo di nuove funzionalità sono affidati a numerosi team indipendenti, tra cui Ignite, Informal Systems, Binary Builders, Strangelove e Atom Accelerator DAO.

La connettività cross-chain continua a fare passi avanti.  Un aggiornamento in arrivo, chiamato IBC Eureka (IBC v2), promette un miglioramento significativo delle performance e un’integrazione più semplice con le catene al di fuori dell’ecosistema Cosmos, come Ethereum, rollup EVM (Base, Ink, Soneium…) e Solana.  Eureka mira inoltre a ridurre i tempi di inserimento di nuove catene e permettere all’Hub di distribuire la liquidity tra le catene.  Queste innovazioni, unite al supporto EVM canonico, rendono Cosmos una delle architetture di base più modulari e interoperabili.

Performance della rete

Poiché Cosmos è una rete di catene di applicazioni indipendenti, il throughput e la latenza variano da catena a catena.  CometBFT offre tempi di blocco rapidi e una finalizzazione quasi istantanea, mentre la nuova serializzazione introdotta con l’aggiornamento Stargate ha migliorato l’efficienza su tutte le catene.

Tuttavia, le performance reali dipendono dall’hardware del validatore e dalle condizioni della rete. A giugno 2024, un bug nell’aggiornamento V17 dell’Hub ha arrestato la produzione dei blocchi; gli sviluppatori hanno risolto il problema e riavviato la rete nel giro di poche ore, dimostrando tanto la resilienza della rete, quanto i rischi di aggiornamenti complessi. Il progetto di Interchain Inc. suggerisce che la prossima revisione di Cosmos SDK migliorerà la produttività di un ordine di grandezza.

Non è possibile determinare dati precisi relativi alle transazioni al secondo, poiché ciascuna zona ha parametri diversi, ma l’architettura di Cosmos dà priorità alla finalizzazione istantanea e alla scalabilità modulare rispetto al semplice numero di transazioni al secondo (TPS).

A cosa serve ATOM?

ATOM è il token nativo del Cosmos Hub.  Svolge diverse funzioni:

  • Commissioni di transazione: gli utenti versano ATOM per elaborare le transazioni e interagire con i servizi dell’Hub.

  • Staking e sicurezza: i validatori mettono in staking ATOM per proteggere l’Hub; i deleganti possono delegare ATOM ai validatori e guadagnare delle ricompense. Grazie a Interchain Security, chi ha messo in staking ATOM guadagna anche una quota delle commissioni dalle catene di consumatori.

  • Governance: i detentori esprimo un voto sugli aggiornamenti del protocollo, il cambiamento dei parametri e la spesa del tesoro.

  • Garanzia e utilizzo cross-chain: alcune catene di applicazioni accettano ATOM come garanzia o per il pagamento delle gas fee; se adottati, i progetti per un’EVM basata su Hub utilizzerebbero ATOM come token gas.  A seconda del proprio modello di sicurezza, anche le catene aziendali potrebbero richiedere lo staking di ATOM.

Il programma dell’offerta di ATOM e il suo ruolo sono soggetti alle proposte di governance. Nel libro bianco del 2022 “Hub 2.0” è stato proposto di allineare l’emissione di ATOM alla domanda di servizi di sicurezza all’interno dell’Interchain, ma l’implementazione rimane controversa. L’acquisizione di Skip nel 2024 e la creazione di Interchain Inc. mirano a monetizzare i servizi dell’Hub attraverso commissioni di routing e partnership istituzionali.

Ecosistema e casi d’uso

A dicembre 2024, la piattaforma di informazioni Blockworks ha dichiarato che, all’interno dell’Interchain, operavano più di cento blockchain indipendenti, che si scambiano valore attraverso IBC.

Cosmos ospita un’ampia gamma di blockchain specializzate e si è affermata in modo particolare nella finanza decentralizzata e nell’infrastruttura cross-chain. Lo scambio decentralizzato Osmosis funge da centro di liquidity e consente transazioni trustless tra diversi token abilitati a IBC.  A inizio 2024, Picasso Network ha connesso Ethereum a Cosmos via IBC, permettendo ai token di Ethereum di muoversi direttamente verso le catene Cosmos.

Noble, una catena applicativa basata sull’SDK, emette USDC nativi e ha recentemente stretto una partnership con Frax Finance per portare le stablecoin FRAX e sFRAX (una versione in staking di FRAX) nell’ecosistema. Integrare FRAX e sFRAX in Cosmos permette agli utenti DeFi di detenere un asset agganciato al dollaro o la sua controparte fruttifera durante le transazioni sull’Interchain.

Cosmos sta inoltre attraendo grandi protocolli DeFi: dYdX ha spostato il suo exchange di contratti perpetui basato su order book sulla propria catena Cosmos e ha integrato il liquid staking all’inizio del 2024, mentre Injective è specializzata nella negoziazione di derivati. Per quanto riguarda l’infrastruttura, Helium ha trasferito la sua rete wireless decentralizzata su Solana, anziché su Cosmos, ma altri progetti di infrastruttura decentralizzata, come Akash (cloud computing) e Celestia (disponibilità dei dati), restano strettamente legati all’ecosistema Cosmos.  L’ambiente prevede inoltre di tokenizzare asset del mondo reale attraverso partner istituzionali; Interchain Inc. ha rivelato che le banche giapponesi stanno testando Cosmos e IBC per i trasferimenti di dati che utilizzano il sistema SWIFT.

I vantaggi di Cosmos (interoperabilità, commissioni basse e ottima sicurezza) sono ben consolidati. Tuttavia, la proliferazione di blockchain specializzate non si è tradotta in chiari vantaggi economici per l’Hub principale. A luglio 2025, Interchain Labs ha deciso di non lanciare una EVM nativa dell’Hub e si è invece concentrata sul servizio a reti L1 sovrane e catene istituzionali, indicando che le risorse erano limitate e che il mercato per un’altra piattaforma di smart contract generica si stava frammentando. Questa svolta evidenzia il rinnovato impegno di Cosmos nel fornire infrastrutture e servizi di routing, piuttosto che competere direttamente con altre reti Layer 1.

 

Pro e contro

Pro

L’architettura modulare di Cosmos offre numerosi vantaggi. IBC e il Cosmos SDK permettono agli sviluppatori di costruire blockchain sovrane che interagiscano in modo fluido. La velocità di finalizzazione e consenso rendono le transazioni quasi istantanee, mentre le soluzioni di sicurezza condivise permettono alle nuove catene di essere avviate rapidamente. L’ecosistema è in crescita, con oltre cento catene che utilizzano la tecnologia Cosmos e l’interesse istituzionale che cresce tramite l’emissione di stablecoin e le integrazioni cross-chain.

Contro

La sovranità delle catene per applicazioni specifiche sparpaglia la liquidity e le basi di utenti; la creazione di bridge tra le catene può essere complessa e Interchain Inc. ha definito questo fenomeno una “crisi di liquidità”.  Cambiamenti frequenti, come la decisione presa a luglio 2025 di abbandonare un’EVM nativa dell’Hub, possono creare incertezza per gli sviluppatori.  La complessità di IBC e Interchain Security può comportare rischi per la sicurezza: una grave vulnerabilità di IBC scoperta ad aprile 2024 avrebbe potuto consentire rimborsi infiniti di token, tuttavia è stata corretta prima di essere sfruttata.

Gli aggiornamenti determinano talvolta dei periodi di inattività, come è accaduto con l’interruzione di giugno 2024.  Come altri cripto-asset, il prezzo di ATOM è volatile.

Considerazioni strategiche

Agli investitori, ATOM offre esposizione alla crescita dell’infrastruttura cross-chain e DeFi.  I rendimenti provengono dalle ricompense di staking e dal potenziale apprezzamento derivante dall’aumento della domanda per i servizi dell’Hub. Tuttavia, il successo dipende dalla continua adozione di IBC, da una governance efficace dell’emissione di token e degli aggiornamenti di sicurezza, nonché dalla capacità dell’ecosistema di superare la frammentazione e ospitare applicazioni a uso privato.
