Fino a poco più di 10 anni fa, il mining di Bitcoin era un hobby accessibile a quasi chiunque: bastavano un computer, un software base e una modesta connessione internet.

Con un po’ di pazienza era possibile contribuire alla sicurezza della rete Bitcoin e guadagnare BTC in cambio.

Le cose, però, sono cambiate drasticamente: il mining di Bitcoin si è trasformato in un settore ad altissima professionalità. Ciò che un tempo era un terreno di gioco per i primi interessati e gli appassionati di tecnologia è ora un’attività globale ad alta intensità di capitale.

Oggi il mining di Bitcoin non è più effettuato da singoli appassionati che armeggiano nelle loro camerette. È invece dominato da enormi centri di elaborazione dati, impianti industriali gestiti da aziende e pieni di migliaia di macchine specializzate.

Nel primo trimestre del 2025, nove delle principali società di mining di Bitcoin hanno guadagnato complessivamente 9.800 monete, che, secondo uno studio di CoinShares, avrebbero un valore di 920 milioni di dollari. Negli ultimi anni le società di mining quotate in borsa sono aumentate costantemente e rappresentano il 25-30% della produzione totale di Bitcoin.

Operano attraverso grandi mining pool, combinando la propria potenza di calcolo per aumentare la probabilità di guadagnare delle ricompense.

Nonostante la crescente difficoltà della rete, la concorrenza spietata e i margini di profitto sempre più ridotti, alcune persone restano fedeli all’idea che il mining di Bitcoin dovrebbe rimanere accessibile, anche se solo ai pochi appassionati.

Breve ripasso: che cos’è il mining di Bitcoin?

Prima di addentrarci nell’argomento, rivediamo cosa si intende per mining.

In termini tecnici, il mining di Bitcoin è il processo di validazione dei nuovi blocchi di transazioni e la loro aggiunta alla blockchain.

I miner competono tra loro per risolvere problemi matematici complessi, e il primo a riuscirsi guadagna il diritto di aggiungere un nuovo blocco e ricevere una ricompensa in Bitcoin appena coniati.

Per risolvere questi problemi, la macchina di un miner deve eseguire innumerevoli calcoli al secondo, provando diverse combinazioni fino a trovare la soluzione corretta. Più potente è l’hardware, maggiori sono le possibilità di trovare la soluzione per primi.

Da aprile 2024, la ricompensa per portare a termine con successo il mining di un blocco è di 3,125 BTC. Al momento della stesura di questo articolo, corrispondeva a poco più di 328.000 $. Ma il numero non è fisso: il protocollo di Bitcoin dimezza la ricompensa del blocco ogni quattro anni, un processo noto come “halving”.

Il prossimo halving avrà luogo nel 2028 e l’ultimo è previsto intorno al 2140, quando l’offerta totale di Bitcoin – limitata a 21 milioni di monete – sarà stata completamente emessa.

Attualmente, oltre il 93% di tale offerta è già stato emesso, per circa 19,6 milioni di BTC. Ciò significa che ne rimangono circa 1,4 milioni da estrarre. La domanda è: le persone normali possono ancora partecipare?

È ancora possibile estrarre Bitcoin da casa?

Tecnicamente sì, nel 2025 è ancora possibile estrarre Bitcoin da casa, ma è molto più complesso, costoso e meno accessibile rispetto al passato.

Innanzitutto, è necessario un hardware specializzato. Oggi l’ecosistema del mining è dominato dagli ASIC, Application-Specific Integrated Circuit, costruiti esclusivamente per il mining di Bitcoin.

I modelli attuali come il Bitmain Antminer S21 o la serie Whatsminer M60 di MicroBT offrono hash rate elevati e una migliore efficienza energetica. In confronto, le macchine più vecchie sono diventate praticamente obsolete e il costo dell’elettricità consumata è superiore alle ricompense di mining.

Queste performance hanno un prezzo. Gli ASIC di nuova generazione costano, generalmente, tra 2.500 e 4.000 $, e questo è solo il costo dell’hardware. Servono anche un’alimentazione compatibile, soluzioni di raffreddamento ed eventualmente accessori per gestire il rumore e il flusso d’aria.

Parlando di rumore, queste macchine sono rumorose: sono paragonabili a un aspirapolvere che funziona senza sosta. Inoltre producono molto calore. Cercare di usarne una in un piccolo appartamento diventerebbe presto insopportabile.

L’elettricità è un altro elemento cruciale. Un ASIC moderno consuma tra i 2.800 e i 3.800 watt in modo continuo. Per la maggior parte degli impianti domestici servirebbero degli aggiornamenti, che spesso comportano l’intervento di un elettricista certificato.

Alcuni produttori hanno recentemente sviluppato dei sistemi per riutilizzare il calore generato dal mining di Bitcoin per riscaldare le abitazioni o persino l’acqua corrente. Dispositivi come Avalon Mini 3 e Nano 3S di Canaan oppure Ofen di 21Energy riflettono questo approccio, offrendo soluzioni compatte che combinano il mining con il riscaldamento domestico. Il loro costo si aggira intorno ai 1.000 $.

Tuttavia, esistono anche delle soluzioni più abbordabili, note come “micro miner”, progettati per i miner indipendenti. I più popolari, come BitAxe e NerdAxe, costano circa 120 $.

Oltre ad avere un prezzo contenuto, sono anche silenziosi. Detto questo, però, non sono molto potenti e la loro redditività rimane bassa, se non addirittura negativa, a causa dei costi dell’elettricità.

In breve, il mining domestico è ancora possibile nel 2025, ma non rappresenta più un semplice hobby. Richiede importanti investimenti economici, competenze tecniche e un ambiente adatto.

È ancora redditizio?

Occorre essere realisti: nel 2025 il mining di Bitcoin da casa non è più un modo affidabile per guadagnare.

La redditività dipende da numerose variabili: l’efficienza dell’hardware, i costi dell’elettricità, il prezzo di mercato di Bitcoin e la difficoltà della rete. Sfortunatamente, la maggior parte di questi fattori è a svantaggio dei miner indipendenti su piccola scala.

L’elettricità rimane costosa in molte regioni e gli impianti di mining su larga scala traggono vantaggio dalle economie di scala e da fonti di energia più convenienti, rendendo la concorrenza ancora più agguerrita.

Detto questo, non è del tutto impossibile farcela. A marzo un miner indipendente ha estratto con successo un blocco utilizzando Bitaxe. Per quel singolo blocco il miner è stato ricompensato con 3,15 BTC, che al valore attuale corrispondono a oltre 260.000 $.

Sebbene si tratti di un evento estremamente raro, dimostra che la fortuna può ancora giocare un ruolo importante. Queste storie mantengono vivo il sogno degli appassionati.

Per la maggior parte dei miner domestici, però, il mining indipendente non è fattibile. L’unica opzione valida è quella di unirsi a una mining pool, che permette ai partecipanti di guadagnare un reddito stabile, seppur modesto, sulla base della propria quota dell’hash rate collettivo. Non sarà sufficiente per pagare l’affitto, ma potrebbe compensare parte della bolletta energetica, soprattutto per coloro che vivono in una zona con tariffe energetiche basse o possono far funzionare l’ASIC fuori dalle ore di punta.

Detto questo, molti appassionati di mining non lo fanno solo per i profitti. Alcuni desiderano sostenere la rete Bitcoin o approfondire le proprie conoscenze sul funzionamento del mining. Altri lo vedono come un esperimento personale: un modo per testare il loro hardware, acquisire nuove competenze e rimanere in contatto con la tecnologia in modo pratico.

In questi casi, il valore effettivo non si misura in BTC guadagnati, ma in esperienza acquisita.

Conclusioni

Nel 2025 fare mining di Bitcoin da casa difficilmente ti porterà alla ricchezza. Le probabilità sono basse, i costi sono elevati e il rumore continuo potrebbe facilmente spingerti ad abbandonare la casa.

Tuttavia le persone curiose, determinate e con un po’ di competenze tecniche possono comunque partecipare a questa vasta rete decentralizzata da casa.

Bisogna essere pazienti, sopportare il caldo e accettare che si tratta più di fare esperienza che di ottenere un vero e proprio guadagno economico. E, ogni tanto, qualcuno ha la schedina vincente.
