Intelligenza artificiale e criptovalute: una vera storia d’amore

La convergenza dell’IA e della blockchain è stata una delle tendenze principali delle criptovalute nel 2024. Secondo CoinMarketCap, la capitalizzazione di mercato del settore “IA e big data” all’inizio di dicembre 2024 era di 58 miliardi di dollari, ossia un aumento di oltre il 260% nel giro di un anno. Questo articolo analizza alcune delle forze motrici dietro a questa tendenza, compresa la democratizzazione della potenza di calcolo impiegata per addestrare ed eseguire i modelli e la crescente adozione in un ampio spettro di casi d’uso, come la finanza decentralizzata (DeFi), il gaming e la governance decentralizzata.

Cosa vuol dire DeAI?

Se da un lato le autorità centrali controllano i modelli linguistici di grandi dimensioni (LLM, acronimo dall’inglese) come ChatGPT, l’IA decentralizzata (DeAI) fa leva sulla tecnologia blockchain per distribuire i processi necessari all’esecuzione di un modello tra tutti i nodi che costituiscono la rete. Uno dei principali vantaggi è la maggiore trasparenza sul funzionamento degli LLM, dato che le azioni vengono registrate su una blockchain visibile al pubblico, al contrario dell’IA centralizzata che in genere viene considerata una “scatola nera”. La DeAI è anche efficiente contro la manomissione, perché le reti distribuite non hanno un single point of failure.

L’obiettivo finale è quello di eseguire gli LLM completamente on-chain, ma per la DeAI è ancora presto. Gli LLM richiedono una potenza di calcolo significativa, specialmente per addestrare un algoritmo, che pochi protocolli sono in grado di gestire. Ad ogni modo, alcuni stanno già usando l’inferenza, ossia il processo di produzione di un output come, ad esempio, la risposta di un chatbot a una domanda.   

Le reti informatiche decentralizzate, un tipo di rete di infrastrutture fisiche decentralizzate (DePIN), fornisce un approccio alternativo all’alimentazione degli LLM. Queste reti fungono da mercati che mettono in contatto i fornitori con eccedenza di energia prodotta e gli utenti che non hanno le risorse per costruire da soli le infrastrutture necessarie. Come si intuisce dal nome, si basano sulla tecnologia blockchain, che tiene traccia dei contributi dei fornitori ed emette ricompense sotto forma di criptovalute, generalmente nel token nativo di quella rete.

Una rete informatica decentralizzata che ha registrato una crescita significativa fino ad oggi è IO.net, costruita sul protocollo Solana, che ha raggiunto una capitalizzazione di mercato di oltre 400 milioni di dollari (a dicembre 2024) sin dal lancio del suo token nativo (IO) sei mesi prima. Alla fine del 2023, IO.net si è unita alle DePIN compagne Render e Filecoin per ingrandire il numero dei fornitori.

Cosa sono gli agenti di IA?

Un agente di intelligenza artificiale, o agente di IA, è un modello che completa un compito al posto di un umano, a differenza di un chatbot, programmato per l’interazione (per rispondere a domande). Gli utenti assegnano un obiettivo e successivamente l’agente svolge il compito in base a com’è stato addestrato l’algoritmo, cosa che può richiedere l’accesso a fonti di dati o anche di lavorare con altri agenti.

Tipi di agenti di IA

Type of AI AgentsUno dei maggiori attori sulla scena delle criptovalute per capitalizzazione di mercato (oltre 3,6 miliardi di dollari a dicembre 2024) è Virtual Protocols, una piattaforma che consente agli utenti di creare i propri agenti, per esempio per creare un personaggio di gaming o per pubblicare autonomamente post sui social network. Questi agenti possono emettere token: AIXBT, fornitore di analisi di mercato, ha una capitalizzazione superiore ai 450 milioni di dollari a dicembre 2024.

Un altro agente di IA in criptovalute che si è fatto notare è Truth Terminal, che ha mosso i primi passi autonomamente sul suo account X (prima chiamato Twitter) inventando un meme di internet noto come Goatse Gospel (un gioco di parole simile a “Vangelo della capra”) che si alimenta di input provenienti da siti come Reddit. La comunità cripto, per tutta risposta, ha lanciato la moneta meme Goat (con capitalizzazione di mercato di 450 milioni di dollari a dicembre 2024) e ha creato un portafoglio cripto su Solana. Grazie alle donazioni, Truth Terminal è diventato di fatto un influencer di monete meme con quasi 200.000 follower su X e un portafoglio che custodisce quasi 970 token diversi, per un valore di 423 milioni di dollari (a dicembre 2024).   

Oltre le monete meme

Gli agenti di IA possiedono un ampio ventaglio di casi d’uso, che va ben oltre alimentare la frenesia delle monete meme, particolarmente nella DeFi. Per esempio, i bot possono essere programmati per mettere in atto automaticamente delle strategie di trading in determinate condizioni di mercato o per ribilanciare un portafoglio. Le app DeFI possono trarre vantaggio a loro volta dagli agenti, ad esempio aiutando gli scambi decentralizzati ad allocare i fondi tra pool di liquidità, il che facilita la compravendita di cripto senza bisogno di intermediari.

Alla fine di agosto 2024, Brian Armstrong, cofondatore e CEO dell’exchange di criptovalute Coinbase, ha annunciato l’esecuzione della prima transazione tra due agenti di IA: uno degli agenti aveva usato la stablecoin USDC di Circle per acquistare token IA dall’altro. Come Armstrong osserva, uno degli attuali limiti degli agenti è l’impossibilità di svolgere compiti come la prenotazione di un biglietto aereo o di una stanza di hotel, perché non dispongono di un conto bancario… però hanno un portafoglio di criptovalute, come dimostrato da Truth Terminal. Gli agenti di IA possono usare USDC per acquistare da persone, venditori e altri agenti su Base, il protocollo Layer-2 di Coinbase, una blockchain costruita sulla rete Ethereum.  

Un ulteriore caso d’uso potenziale per gli agenti di IA nel mondo delle criptovalute è quello di snellire il funzionamento delle organizzazioni autonome decentralizzate (DAO), enti che operano con tecnologia blockchain senza il bisogno di un’autorità centralizzata. Le DAO si affidano ai membri della community per votare le diverse questioni di governance, come la gestione della tesoreria o l’aggiornamento dei protocolli, e gli agenti possono raccogliere informazioni per permettere decisioni informate o fungere da voto per delega.  

Riassumendo

DeAI è il termine impiegato per descrivere l’IA che si esegue su tecnologia blockchain, diventando trasparente e a prova di manomissione. Anche se pochi protocolli sono in grado di eseguire gli LLM completamente on-chain, le reti informatiche decentralizzate, un tipo di DePIN, forniscono la potenza di calcolo richiesta dagli sviluppatori per addestrare i modelli e ottenere risultati.

Gli agenti di IA eseguono azioni al posto degli umani. Truth Terminal, un influencer di moneta meme, è stato uno degli agenti di criptovalute di più altro profilo finora, ma può essere applicato a un ampio spettro di casi d’uso nel settore cripto, come DeFI, gaming e gestione delle DAO. Gli agenti possono anche concludere transazioni tra di loro, come dimostrato da Coinbase ad agosto 2024.
