Les probabilités de hausse ont reculé, les rendements longs ont atteint un plus haut en 24 ans, et le Bitcoin a consolidé

Le Bitcoin a profité cette semaine d'une forte réduction des anticipations de hausse de taux à court terme. Le catalyseur a d'abord été le président de la Fed de New York, John Williams, qui a estimé que la hausse de 25 points de base de septembre avait réduit l'urgence d'un nouveau resserrement et que la Fed disposait désormais de temps pour évaluer les données à venir. Les marchés ont réagi rapidement, la probabilité implicite d'une hausse en octobre passant d'environ 75 % à environ 50 %. Les données publiées depuis ont encore abaissé ces anticipations, les marchés n'attribuant désormais qu'environ 37 % de probabilité à une hausse en octobre.

Les données économiques elles-mêmes sont devenues plus mitigées. Les ouvertures de postes JOLTS d'août sont tombées à 7,079 million, sous les attentes et à leur plus bas niveau depuis cinq mois, tandis que la confiance des consommateurs de septembre a chuté fortement à 81,9, contre 88,6, son niveau le plus faible depuis 2014. Ces deux éléments indiquent un affaiblissement de la demande de main-d'œuvre et une pression croissante sur le consommateur. Les dernières données du PCE ont également été relativement encourageantes : l'inflation sous-jacente a progressé de 0,2 % en glissement mensuel et de 3,0 % en glissement annuel, en dessous des attentes, renforçant l'argument en faveur de la patience de la Fed.

La partie courte de la courbe s'est repricée, pas la tendance de fond

Le tableau est toutefois loin d'être uniformément faible. Le PIB du deuxième trimestre a été révisé à 2,2 % en rythme annualisé, les dépenses de consommation ont progressé de 0,9 %, un chiffre solide, en août, et les inscriptions hebdomadaires au chômage sont tombées à leur plus bas niveau depuis juillet. La Fed se trouve donc face à une combinaison inhabituelle d'indicateurs avancés d'emploi et de confiance plus faibles, aux côtés d'une activité sous-jacente relativement résiliente.

Pour le Bitcoin, la baisse des anticipations de taux a été favorable. Elle rappelle à quel point l'actif reste sensible à la politique monétaire et à la liquidité en dollars à court terme. Des taux directeurs anticipés plus bas réduisent l'attrait relatif des liquidités et des bons du Trésor à courte échéance, et améliorent généralement le contexte pour le Bitcoin et les autres actifs sensibles à la liquidité.

Ce qui est inhabituel, c'est le comportement du marché des bons du Trésor. Alors que les contrats à terme ont nettement réduit les anticipations d'une hausse en octobre, les rendements à plus longue échéance ont continué de progresser. Le rendement du Trésor à 10 ans a brièvement atteint environ 5,3 %, son plus haut niveau depuis 2002. Cette divergence suggère que les investisseurs distinguent de plus en plus la politique de la Fed sur la partie courte de la courbe des préoccupations liées à la soutenabilité budgétaire, à l'abondance des émissions du Trésor et à la prime de terme sur la partie longue.

Cela pourrait avoir une importance pour le Bitcoin. La baisse des anticipations de taux directeurs est favorable via le canal classique de la liquidité, tandis que la hausse des rendements à long terme reflète de plus en plus des inquiétudes sur la soutenabilité budgétaire américaine plutôt qu'un simple resserrement monétaire. Si cette distinction devait s'accentuer, le Bitcoin pourrait bénéficier à la fois d'une trajectoire de la Fed plus accommodante qu'anticipé et d'une demande renouvelée pour des actifs non souverains.

Les flux de fonds montrent toutefois que les investisseurs restent prudents. Nous n'avons observé qu'environ 150 M USD d'entrées depuis le début de la semaine, un net ralentissement par rapport aux quelque 3,5 Md USD de la semaine précédente. Ce changement ne ressemble pas encore à un retournement du sentiment, mais il suggère que les investisseurs deviennent plus sélectifs après une période d'entrées aussi marquée.

Dans l'ensemble, le contexte macroéconomique s'est amélioré pour le Bitcoin, mais il reste finement équilibré. Des données plus faibles sur l'emploi, la confiance et l'inflation ont réduit la nécessité d'une nouvelle hausse immédiate, tandis que la persistance de rendements du Trésor à long terme très élevés crée une préoccupation budgétaire distincte. Ces deux évolutions pourraient en définitive se révéler favorables au Bitcoin, bien que par des canaux très différents.
