In Zeiten einer hohen Inflationsrate und globaler Instabilität wenden sich Anleger normalerweise Vermögenswerten zu, die als „Wertaufbewahrung“ gelten. Aufgrund seiner Langlebigkeit ist Gold dabei traditionell die erste Wahl. Bitcoin stellt jedoch nun den hohen Status des Goldes als das ultimative Mittel zur Wertaufbewahrung in Frage, da beide viel gemeinsam haben und einige dieser Eigenschaften bei Bitcoin eventuell sogar noch effektiver sein könnten.

In diesem Artikel werfen wir einen Blick auf die Gemeinsamkeiten von Bitcoin und Gold und erklären im Anschluss, wie Bitcoin die Rendite in einem ausgeglichenen Portfolio steigern könnte. 

Traditionelles Gold vs. Aufstrebender Bitcoin

Der erste schriftlich dokumentierte Einsatz von Gold als Ware reicht etwa 5.000 Jahre zurück – bis zu der Zeit, als die alten Ägypter begannen, Schmuck und andere Dekorationsgegenstände aus Gold herzustellen. Der erste Einsatz als Tauschmittel hingegen erfolgte erst mehrere Tausend Jahre später, als die Lydier, deren Königreich sich in der westlichen Türkei befand, im Jahr 564 v. Chr. die ersten Goldmünzen prägten. Seitdem hat das Edelmetall seinen zentralen Status im globalen Finanzsystem beibehalten – so auch als die Länder ihre Währungen an seinen Wert banden. Das als so genannter Goldstandard bekannte Währungsinstrument wurde ursprünglich Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts vom Vereinigten Königreich eingeführt und war trotz gelegentlicher Unterbrechungen weit verbreitet – bis die USA es 1971 aufgaben.     

Gold hat sich aufgrund mehrerer Merkmale als Wertanlage etabliert, was bedeutet, dass es seinen Wert über einen längeren Zeitraum behält:

  • Knappheit – laut des World Gold Council, wurden nur etwas mehr als 210.000 Tonnen bisher abgebaut, während sich weitere 59.000 Tonnen noch im Untergrund befinden

  • Teilbarkeit – Gold kann in kleine Stücke geteilt werden

  • Tragbarkeit – es ist relativ leicht (in kleinen Mengen) zu transportieren

  • Haltbarkeit – Gold hält mehrere tausend Jahre, ohne sich zu zersetzen

Gold erfüllt verschiedene Funktionen als Bestandteil eines Anlegerportfolios – in erster Linie dient es als Absicherung gegen Inflation, da es seine Kaufkraft bewahrt. Wenn die Preise steigen, verliert eine Währung an Kaufkraft, weil Kunden für den gleichen Geldbetrag weniger Waren erwerben, während der Goldwert tendenziell gleichbleibt oder sogar steigt. Beispielsweise stieg während der EU-Inflation die Inflationsrate von unter 1 % im Januar 2021 auf 10,6 % im Oktober 2022 – während der Wert des Goldes um circa 13 % stieg. Darüber hinaus kann das Gold für Anleger zum Fels in der Brandung werden, auf den sie in Zeiten geopolitischer oder wirtschaftlicher Instabilität zurückgreifen können – zumal es auch zur Diversifizierung des Portfolios beiträgt, worauf wir im nächsten Abschnitt eingehen werden.

Die Geschichte des Bitcoin als Vermögenswert hingegen ist vergleichsweise kurz. Der Gründer des Bitcoin, der unter dem Pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto bekannt ist, veröffentlichte im Jahr 2008 ein Whitepaper mit der Idee für eine digitale Währung. Im Januar 2009 wurde dann der sogenannte Genesis-Block, d. h. die ersten Transaktionen, von ihm abgebaut.

Obwohl der Bitcoin zunächst als Tauschmittel eingeführt wurde, wird er mittlerweile eher zur Wertaufbewahrung genutzt und als „digitales Gold“ angesehen – auch wenn er mit dem Edelmetall eher wenig gemeinsam hat. Satoshi begrenzte die Gesamtmenge direkt zu Beginn auf 21 Millionen Bitcoin. 94,14 % sind bereits in Umlauf, die fehlenden Coins sollen erwartungsgemäß bis zum Jahr 2140 abgebaut werden. Bitcoin ist aufgrund der dezentralisierten Blockchain-Technologie, die ihm zugrunde liegt, langlebig. Die Betriebszeit des Netzwerks liegt seit 2009 bei 99,9 %, mit dem letzten Ausfall im Jahr 2013. Und schließlich ist der Bitcoin leicht teilbar – der kleinste Wert, ein Satoshi, entspricht dem 100 Millionstel eines Bitcoins – und auch übertragbar, da seine Besitzer ihn in einem digitalen Wallet aufbewahren können.

Die Rolle von Bitcoin in Einem Eusgeglichenen Portfolio

Diversifizierung bezeichnet eine Anlagestrategie, bei der das Kapital auf verschiedene Vermögenswerte wie Aktien, Anleihen, Bargeld und Kryptowährungen aufgeteilt wird, obwohl sie auch auf verschiedene Regionen oder Branchen weltweit angewandt werden kann. Das Ziel ist die Minimierung der Auswirkungen eines leistungsschwachen Anteils auf die Gesamtrendite eines Portfolios.

Korrelation ist ein Schlüsselkonzept beim Aufbau eines diversifizierten Portfolios, da sie das Ausmaß misst, in dem sich zwei Vermögenswerte in die gleiche Richtung bewegen können. Anleger suchen zunehmend nach Anlagemöglichkeiten in Bitcoin, da diese normalerweise nicht mit anderen Anlageklassen korrelieren. Laut CoinShares ist die Korrelation zwischen Bitcoin und dem S&P 500, einem Index, der die Aktienentwicklung der 500 größten US-Unternehmen abbildet, seit 2019 mit 30 % relativ gering, was bedeutet, dass sie sich nur etwa zu einem Drittel der Zeit in die gleiche Richtung bewegen. Und obwohl Bitcoin als digitales Gold gilt, ist seine Korrelation mit dem physischen Edelmetall mit 19 % seit 2019 sogar noch geringer.

Wie viel Bitcoin Anleger halten sollten, hängt von ihrer Risikobereitschaft ab. Untersuchungen von CoinShares, bei der unter anderem die Auswirkungen verschiedener Allokationen auf die Volatilität eines Portfolios (die Schwankung der Renditen) gemessen wurden, zeigt, dass die optimale Allokation zwischen 4 % und 10 % liegt.

Um zu demonstrieren, wie sich Bitcoin auf die Gesamtperformance auswirkt, hat CoinShares seit 2017 fünf Modellportfolios verfolgt:

  • Standardallokation (60 % Aktien und 40 % Anleihen)

  • Standardallokation mit 4 % Bitcoin

  • Allwetter-Portfolio von Ray Dalio, bei dem die 7,5 % Allokation von Gold durch Bitcoin ersetzt wurde

  • Das Kakerlaken-Portfolio von Dylan Grice, bei dem die 7 % Allokation von Gold durch Bitcoin ersetzt wurde

  • Die Yale-Endowment-Anlagestrategie (die kein Gold beinhaltet), bei der die 7 % Allokation in Immobilien-Investments durch Bitcoin ersetzt wurde

Die nachstehenden Ergebnisse (Stand 15. Oktober 2024) veranschaulichen, dass die Aufnahme von Bitcoin in eines dieser Portfolios die Rendite erhöhte – während die Auswirkungen auf den maximalen Drawdown (d. h. auf den größten einzelnen Wertverlust in einem Portfolio) sowie die Volatilität begrenzt blieben. Zudem wurde die Diversifizierung deutlich verbessert, was uns die geringere Korrelation (im Vergleich zur Standardallokation) zeigt.

Bitcoin-Performance über verschiedene Portfoliostile (seit 2017)Manchmal kann eine Anlage eine überdurchschnittliche Wertentwicklung aufweisen, was die Vermögensallokation des Portfolios verzerrt und dessen Risikoprofil erhöht. Steigt beispielsweise eine bestimmte Aktie, könnte dies die gesamte Allokation eines Standardportfolios auf 70 % Aktien und 30 % Anleihen verlagern. In diesem Fall müssten betroffene Anleger ihr Portfolio einem Rebalancing unterziehen, einer Risikomanagementstrategie, die den Kauf oder Verkauf von Beständen beinhaltet, um die ursprüngliche Allokation des Portfolios wiederherzustellen.

Fazit

Der Bitcoin hat sich einen Ruf als Wertaufbewahrungsmittel gemacht, weil er knapp, teilbar, übertragbar und haltbar ist. Somit könnte er in einem Portfolio den gleichen Zweck erfüllen wie das Gold – zur Absicherung gegen Inflation, als Fels in der Brandung stürmischer geopolitischer oder wirtschaftlicher Zeiten sowie als Quelle der Diversifizierung.

Der Aufbau eines diversifizierten Portfolios umfasst Investitionen in verschiedene Anlageklassen – und in manchen Fällen auch in verschiedene Länder und Branchen. Bitcoin hat sich aufgrund seiner geringen Korrelation mit anderen risikoreichen Vermögenswerten wie Aktien als eine wirksame Quelle der Diversifizierung für Portfolios erwiesen. Untersuchungen von CoinShares machen deutlich, dass eine Allokation von 4–10 % in Bitcoin seit 2015 die Leistung und Diversifizierung von Standardportfolios verbessert hat, während die Auswirkungen auf den maximalen Wertverlust und die Volatilität begrenzt blieben.
