In dieser Ausgabe unserer informellen Serie über neuartige Protokolle, die versuchen, das sogenannte Blockchain-Trilemma von Ethereum zu lösen, werfen wir einen genaueren Blick auf Arbitrum – einen der Hauptkonkurrenten von Superchain – und den aktuellen Stand seines Ökosystems.

Warum wurde Arbitrum entwickelt?

Das Blockchain-Trilemma besagt, dass Entwickler Kompromisse zwischen Sicherheit, Dezentralisierung und Skalierbarkeit eingehen müssen. Ethereum setzt auf Sicherheit und Dezentralisierung, was jedoch seine Skalierbarkeit einschränkt – das Netzwerk verarbeitet lediglich 16 Transaktionen pro Sekunde (TPS) und liegt damit nur auf Platz 16 der schnellsten Blockchains. Diese Einschränkung führt zu Netzüberlastungen und in der Folge zu erhöhten Transaktionskosten (Gas Fees), die im September 2024 infolge gestiegener On-Chain-Aktivität um fast 500 % stiegen – teils ausgelöst durch das steigende Handelsvolumen auf dezentralen Exchanges.

Arbitrum wurde im August 2021 von Offchain Labs eingeführt, um diese Skalierbarkeitsprobleme zu lösen. Als Layer-2-Protokoll (L2) baut es auf der Sicherheit von Ethereum auf, nutzt jedoch die Technologie sogenannter Rollups, um die Transaktionsgeschwindigkeit zu erhöhen. Transaktionen werden außerhalb der Ethereum-Blockchain verarbeitet und anschließend gebündelt zurück an die Basisschicht übermittelt. Arbitrum setzt dabei auf sogenannte Optimistic Rollups, bei denen Transaktionen als gültig gelten, solange sie nicht angefochten werden – im Gegensatz zu Zero-Knowledge-Rollups (ZK), die kryptographische Nachweise (Null-Wissen-Beweis bzw. Zero-Knowledge-Proof) zur Validierung nutzen.

Das Netzwerk besteht aus mehreren Chains: Arbitrum One führt die Rollups aus, während Arbitrum Nova als AnyTrust Chain fungiert – ähnlich wie ein Rollup, jedoch werden die Daten auf externen Plattformen wie Google Cloud gespeichert. Diese Architektur ermöglicht es Nova, niedrigere Transaktionsgebühren zu erheben, geht jedoch zulasten der Dezentralisierung, da sie auf Drittanbieter angewiesen ist. Zusätzlich existieren sogenannte Orbit Chains, die sich individuell konfigurieren lassen und sowohl als L2- als auch als Layer-3-Lösungen betrieben werden können.

Der native Token

ARB ist der native Token von Arbitrum und basiert auf dem ERC-20-Standard der Ethereum-Community. Zwar kann ARB als Tauschmittel verwendet werden, seine Hauptfunktion liegt jedoch in seiner Rolle als Governance-Token (Transaktionsgebühren werden in Ether beglichen):

Abstimmungen sind token-gewichtet – je mehr ARB gehalten wird, desto größer der Einfluss.

Das Gesamtangebot von ARB wurde ursprünglich auf 10 Milliarden festgelegt. Im März 2025 befanden sich davon 4,6 Milliarden im Umlauf. Die Token-Verteilung nach der Genehmigung der AIPs 1.1 und 1.2 ist in der folgenden Tabelle dargestellt. Teammitglieder und Investoren unterliegen einer vierjährigen Sperrfrist, wobei die erste Freigabe im März 2024 erfolgte und in den folgenden drei Jahren monatlich fortgesetzt wird. Die Arbitrum Foundation hat ihre Vesting-Periode im April 2023 begonnen – ebenfalls über vier Jahre.  

ARB's distributionDie maximale jährliche Inflationsrate von ARB liegt bei 2 %. Die Ausgabe neuer Token liegt in der Verantwortung der Arbitrum DAO – bis März 2025 wurde jedoch kein entsprechender Vorschlag eingereicht.

Das Arbitrum-Ökosystem

Die Marktkapitalisierung des Arbitrum-Ökosystems liegt im März 2025 bei knapp 290 Milliarden USD und übertrifft damit Optimism (48 Milliarden USD) deutlich.

Die größten Projekte innerhalb des Ökosystems sind stabile, an den US-Dollar gebundene Multichain-Stablecoins: USDT, ausgegeben von der Blockchain-Plattform Tether, sowie USDC, ausgegeben vom Zahlungsdienstleister Circle. Tether kündigte kürzlich an, Arbitrum als Infrastruktur für den neuen interoperablen Stablecoin USDTo zu nutzen.

Das nächstgrößte Projekt nach Marktkapitalisierung ist Chainlink – ein Oracle-Netzwerk, das Blockchains mit realen Daten verbindet, die von Smart Contracts benötigt werden, um Vertragstransaktionen auszuführen, etwa Wetten auf den Ausgang von Wahlen oder Sportereignissen. Den Abschluss der fünf größten Projekte bilden zwei weitere Stablecoins: DAI von Sky Protocol und USDe – ein synthetischer Stablecoin von Ethena Labs, der nicht durch Fiatwährungen, sondern durch Kryptowährungen und Futures besichert ist.

Zum Arbitrum-Ökosystem gehört außerdem eine sogenannte Bridge, über die sich Vermögenswerte zwischen verschiedenen Blockchains übertragen lassen. Diese Bridge ermöglicht es Projekten wie Hyperliquid – einer Krypto-Börse für unbefristete Derivate (ohne Verfallsdatum) auf eigener Basisschicht –, von den schnelleren Transaktionen und geringeren Kosten auf Arbitrum One zu profitieren.

Ein Ausblick in die Zukunft

Im August 2024 veröffentlichte Offchain Labs eine Roadmap mit kurzfristigen Entwicklungszielen für Arbitrum. Geplant sind unter anderem:

  • Arbitrum soll für Entwickler besser zugänglich gemacht werden – unter anderem durch die Einführung von Arbitrum Stylus, einer virtuellen Maschine, die neben Solidity weitere Programmiersprachen unterstützt.  

  • Die Dezentralisierung soll gestärkt werden, indem ein neuer Streitbeilegungsmechanismus für die Optimistic Rollups eingeführt wird. Dieser soll dazu beitragen, dass das Netzwerk die von L2Beat definierte Einstufung als Stage-Two-Rollup erreicht.

  • Die Interoperabilität soll verbessert werden, indem die Bestätigungszeit verringert wird, die durch Nutzeranfechtungen von Transaktionen entsteht.

  • Zudem werden Möglichkeiten geprüft, Zero-Knowledge-Proofs in Optimistic Rollups zu integrieren, um den Bestätigungsprozess von Transaktionen zu beschleunigen.
