Dies ist der letzte Artikel unserer dreiteiligen Serie zum Thema Krypto und Energie. Wenn du Warum verbraucht Krypto Energie? und BTC: Auf dem Weg zu einer grüneren Blockchain noch nicht gelesen hast, solltest du damit anfangen. 

In den vorangegangenen Artikeln stand Bitcoin im Zentrum, das weltweit größte Krypto-Asset. Obwohl es wegen seiner Umweltauswirkungen stark kritisiert wird, haben wir festgestellt, dass Bitcoin-Mining nur 0,08 % der weltweiten CO2-Emissionen ausmacht (bis Dezember 2021). Darüber hinaus setzen Bitcoin-Miner zunehmend auf erneuerbare Energien. 

Andere Blockchains machen hingegen noch größere Fortschritte in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit. In diesem abschließenden Artikel lenken wir unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf den Proof-of-Stake-Mechanismus, der derzeit das Ethereum-Ökosystem und viele andere Blockchains antreibt. 

Was ist Proof of Stake?

Blockchains sind im Grunde dezentralisierte Ledger. Man kann sie sich als riesige, verteilte Datenbanken vorstellen, in denen Transaktionen unter Aufsicht der Community aufgezeichnet werden. Es gibt keine zentrale Behörde, die die Vorgänge überprüft, und so sind die Nutzer selbst für einen zuverlässigen und gesunden Zustand der Datenbank verantwortlich.

Die Netzwerkentwickler der Blockchain setzen Konsensmechanismen ein, um sicherzustellen, dass sich alle auf gewisse Regeln einigen – und um den Nutzern durch Prämien Anreize zu bieten. 2009 führte(n) der oder die Bitcoin-Gründer unter dem Pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto Proof of Work (PoW) ein – einen Mechanismus, der bei Bitcoin auch heute noch verwendet wird. Um dem Netzwerk neue Bitcoins hinzuzufügen, müssen Knoten (eng.: nodes, Computer, auf denen unabhängig voneinander Bitcoin-Software läuft) nachweisen, dass sie komplexe kryptografische Probleme gelöst haben, um mit einem Bruchteil des erzeugten Tokens entschädigt zu werden. 

PoW ist entwurfsbedingt energieaufwändig, da es viel Rechenleistung benötigt. Deshalb ist ein weiterer Konsensmechanismus entstanden: Proof of Stake (PoS). In einem PoS-Netzwerk müssen die Nutzer nicht aktiv gegeneinander antreten, um Prämien freizuschalten. Sie müssen ihre Vermögenswerte lediglich einsetzen (dieser Vorgang nennt sich Staking), sie also in einem Vertrag als Sicherheit sperren. Der Konsensmechanismus wählt dann nach dem Zufallsprinzip den nächsten Nutzer aus, der einen Token erstellt. Je mehr Token ein Nutzer gesetzt hat, desto wahrscheinlicher wird er ausgewählt.

How staking works in the proof-of-stake consensus mechanism

Nutzer, die ihre Token beim Staking einsetzen, werden als Validatoren bezeichnet und müssen sich an einige Regeln halten. In Ethereum muss man mindestens 32 ETH staken, um als unabhängiger Validator handeln zu dürfen. Inhaber mit weniger Assets haben aber die Möglichkeit, Staking-Pools beizutreten, um an entsprechenden Tätigkeiten teilzunehmen. Legt ein Validator durch sein Handeln schlechte Absichten an den Tag (indem er beispielsweise versucht, unzulässige Transaktionen zu validieren), können die eingesetzten Token verbrannt, d. h. zerstört werden. 

 

Ethereums Umstellung 

Bei seiner Einführung im Jahr 2015 basierte Ethereum auf einem Proof-of-Work-Mechanismus. Aber Vitalik Buterin, einer der Mitbegründer des Netzwerks, begeisterte sich schon lange für Proof of Stake. Nach jahrelangen Tests wurde Ethereum schließlich im September 2022 in einem als „Merge“ (Zusammenführung) bekannten Ereignis auf Proof of Stake umgestellt.

Ethereum's carbon debt

Wie sich herausstellte, hatte dieser Mechanismuswechsel erhebliche Auswirkungen auf den Energieverbrauch von Ethereum. Nach dem Mergesank der Stromverbrauch des Netzwerks um mehr als 99,988 %, seine CO2-Bilanz um etwa den gleichen Wert. Das liegt daran, dass im PoS nicht Energie, sondern stattdessen ETH verwendet werden, um das Netzwerk zu sichern.

 

Infolgedessen schätzt das Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute (CCRI), dass der Energieverbrauch von Ethereum 2022 bei etwa 0,0026 TWh lag. Zum Vergleich: Die weltweiten Rechenzentren verbrauchen 200 TWh/Jahr, und selbst Netflix benötigt 0,451 TWh/Jahr. 

Proof of Work ist gekommen, um zu bleiben

 Viele andere beliebte Blockchains setzen wegen seiner Flexibilität, seines geringen Energieverbrauchs und seiner Zuverlässigkeit inzwischen auf Proof of Stake, um das Netzwerk zu sichern und aufrechtzuerhalten. Zu den führenden Kryptos, die PoS nutzen, zählen: Polkadot, Cardano, Solana, Cosmos, Matic, Algorand und Tezos.

Ist Proof of Work also bereits ein Relikt aus der Vergangenheit? Weit gefehlt. Wir gehen davon aus, dass Proof of Work aus mehreren Gründen auch weiterhin eine wichtige Rolle im Krypto-Ökosystem spielen wird. 

Proof of work

PoW bietet unerreichte Sicherheit

PoW wurde speziell dafür entwickelt, Sicherheit zu priorisieren. Es verpflichtet Knotenbetreiber, sich aktiv am System zu beteiligen, indem sie in Hardware und Energieressourcen investieren, um kryptografische Aufgaben zu lösen. Dieser ressourcenintensive Ansatz macht eine Manipulation des Netzes durch Angreifer extrem schwierig. Daher ist PoW gegen 51-%-Angriffe sehr widerstandsfähig, bei denen eine bösartige Entität die Kontrolle über einen Großteil des Netzwerks erlangt und sie für schädliche Zwecke ausnutzt.

PoW ist dezentralisierter

Im Vergleich zu PoS bietet PoW einen höheren Grad an Dezentralisierung. Bei PoS-Systemen müssen die Validatoren oft erhebliche Mengen an Krypto als Sicherheiten sperren. Im Gegensatz dazu ermöglicht PoW allen mit Zugang zu Hardware und Energie selbst in kleinem Maßstab die Teilnahme am Mining. Dieser integrative Ansatz fördert ein hochgradig demokratisches und dezentralisiertes Netzwerk.

PoW steht für Fairness und Leistungsorientiertheit

PoW gilt weithin als gerechterer Konsensmechanismus als PoS, weil er die Miner auf Grundlage ihrer Rechenleistung und ihres Beitrags zum Netzwerk belohnt. Bei PoS werden Validatoren für die Menge an Krypto prämiert, die sie halten, was zu einer Zentralisierung in den Händen einiger weniger großer Inhaber führen kann. Da die Prämien auf den Rechnerressourcen basieren, fördert PoW ein leistungsorientiertes System, das Anreize für aktive Beteiligung und Innovation bietet.

Fazit: Durchblick: Der Energieverbrauch von Krypto
