Krypto-Gegner kritisieren an Krypto oft den Nachhaltigkeitsaspekt. Einige Analysten sind über die Auswirkungen des Energieverbrauchs von Krypto beunruhigt und verweisen auf besorgniserregende Zahlen. Wir bei CoinShares sind der Meinung, dass dieses Problem mit fundierten Untersuchungen angegangen werden muss – und wollen diese dann mit einem breiteren Publikum teilen. 

Aus diesem Grund haben wir eine dreiteilige Artikelreihe erstellt, die sich mit dem Thema befasst, um Missverständnisse über den Energieverbrauch von Krypto (und insbesondere von Bitcoin) aus dem Weg zu räumen. In diesem ersten Artikel geht es um die Grundlagen von Krypto und Energieverbrauch, der zweite Artikel konzentriert sich auf die laufenden Verbesserungen in Richtung eines grüneren Bitcoin-Netzwerks, während der letzte Artikel die Proof-of-Stake-Revolution behandelt.

Die Funktionsweise von Krypto

 Krypto-Assets werden nicht aus der Erde gegraben (wie Gold) oder von nationalen Banken gedruckt (wie Geldscheine). Stattdessen werden sie von dezentralen Computernetzwerken generiert, die sich bei der Ausgabe von Token auf ein gemeinsames Regelwerk stützen. Zwei wichtige Konsensmechanismen – das komplizierte Getriebe, das Transaktionen innerhalb der komplizierten Maschinerie von Blockchains synchronisiert und validiert – dominieren derzeit die Krypto-Sphäre: Proof of Work (PoW) und Proof of Stake (PoS). 

Consensus mechanisms ( PoW and PoS)

Proof of Work ist das „Vorreiter“-Protokoll, das 2009 von dem oder den Bitcoin-Gründer(n) unter dem Pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto konzipiert wurde. Bitcoin war die erste Blockchain überhaupt und führte das Konzept des Krypto-„Mining“ ein. Mining bezeichnet den Vorgang, neue Bitcoins durch das Lösen komplexer Rechenaufgaben zu erzeugen. Die Miner konkurrieren darum, zuerst den „Code zu knacken“, um mit einem Teilwert der Blockchain belohnt zu werden. Zu diesem Zweck richten sie „Bitcoin-Mining-Farmen“ ein, auf denen Hunderte (oder Tausende) von Computern rund um die Uhr laufen. 

 

Dieses System ist von Haus aus energieaufwändig, weil das Protokoll die Kosten zum Erlangen von Mining-Prämien automatisch so anpasst, dass sie sich dem Wert der Prämien annähern. Diese Entscheidung ist jedoch nicht nur durch wirtschaftliche Effizienz motiviert: Sie gewährleistet, dass das System sicher und tatsächlich dezentralisiert bleibt. Da Miner entsprechend der Rechenleistung entschädigt werden, die sie in das Netzwerk investieren, profitiert Bitcoin von einem großen Ressourcenpool, durch den die Integrität des Netzwerks abgesichert ist – kein einzelner Akteur kann es manipulieren. 

Proof of Stake ist der Neuzugang in der Krypto-Familie. Ethereum wechselte im September 2022 in einem Prozess, der als „Merge“ (Zusammenführung) bekannt wurde, von PoW zu PoS. Anstatt die Miner für ihre Belohnungen „arbeiten“ zu lassen, verlangt PoS von den Validatoren den Einsatz, also das „Staking“, ihrer Vermögenswerte, indem sie sie in bestimmten Verträgen sperren. Nach dem Zufallsprinzip weist das System den Validatoren dann abhängig von der Anzahl der von ihnen eingesetzten Token Belohnungen zu. 

Im Vergleich zu PoW verbraucht PoS viel weniger Energie. Man muss keine fortschrittliche Hardware haben, die Daten über lange Zeiträume hinweg verarbeitet – die Arbeit wird im Staking-Vorgang erledigt.

 

Wie viel Energie verbraucht Krypto?

 Krypto und insbesondere Bitcoin-Mining benötigen also Energie. Wie viel, darüber scheiden sich die Geister. Aufgrund der dezentralen Beschaffenheit von Krypto erhält man nicht so leicht verlässliche Zahlen zum weltweiten Energieverbrauch. 

Bitcoin's share of global energy consumption

Im forschungsintensivenBitcoin-Mining-Berichtvon CoinShares wird versucht, solche Zahlen durch Datenerhebung und die Entwicklung eines umfassenden Modells zur Berechnung der Emissionen aufzustellen. Basierend auf diesem Gerüst gehen wir davon aus, dass das Bitcoin-Mining-Netzwerk im Jahr 2020 75 TWh und 2021 82 TWh Strom verbraucht sowie 2020 36 Mio. Tonnen CO2 und 2021 41 Mio. Tonnen CO2 ausgestoßen hat. Diese Zahlen mögen groß erscheinen, machen aber tatsächlich nur 0,08 % des weltweiten CO2-Ausstoßes aus (bis Dezember 2021). Noch aussagekräftiger ist es, diese Zahl im Vergleich mit anderen Branchen zu betrachten. Tatsächlich entsprechen die CO2-Emissionen von Bitcoin nicht einmal denen von Wäschetrocknern in den USA, (die laut dem Unternehmen NYDIG bei 53 Mio. Tonnen CO2 jährlich liegen).

 

Schlussfolgerung: Ein kleiner Preis für eine dezentralisierte Welt

Und was ist mit Ethereum? Nach dem Merge sind der jährliche Stromverbrauch und die CO2-Emissionen des Netzwerks um mehr als 99,9 % gesunken, was 870 t CO2-Emissionen pro Jahr entspricht. Der Energieverbrauch von ETH liegt bei ca. 0,0026 TWh/Jahr – ist also um Längen niedriger als der weltweite Verbrauch von Rechenzentren (200 TWh) und sogar niedriger als der von Netflix (0,451 TWh).
