Ethereum's Neutrality

One of Ethereum’s properties as a platform is its neutrality, meaning that it does not fall under the jurisdiction or control of any single local or state governing entity. This neutrality is a fundamental aspect of Ethereum's value proposition, that the network is resistant to influence or coercion by any individual, businesses, government, or single authority of any kind.

The network is maintained by a globally distributed set of network participants, validators and nodes, each independently running the Ethereum software. This geographic distribution helps prevent any one country or government from taking over or shutting down the network. Unlike traditional financial systems, which can be restricted, influenced, or directly attacked by regulations or adversaries, Ethereum is intentionally designed to operate beyond these constraints, looking to provide an open, permissionless platform worldwide.

Ethereum's neutrality also means it can not take sides in conflicts between sovereigns or other parties. The Ethereum network is designed to follow protocol rules that are purely technical, encouraging all participants to have equal access regardless of their nationality or political affiliations. As it is simply machine code, Ethereum cannot discriminate. This design is what allows Ethereum to be perceived as a credibly neutral, reliable platform for applications and assets, offering users an impartial network for value transfer and many other platform services.
