On 1 July, MiCA's transitional period quietly expired. Any firm still serving EU clients without a licence is now, as of this month, in breach of European law.1 More than 200 crypto-asset service providers have been authorised across the bloc.2 After a decade of the industry demanding regulatory clarity, clarity has arrived, stamped, dated and enforceable.

So it is worth looking closely at who walked through the door first.

The gateway has changed hands

In January, DZ Bank, Germany's second-largest lender, secured a MiCA licence to offer retail crypto trading through its meinKrypto platform, serving the country's vast cooperative banking network.3 Société Générale's SG-FORGE holds a MiCA licence covering custody, transfer and order transmission, and issues a euro stablecoin across three public blockchains.4 Deutsche Bank plans to launch crypto custody this year.5 Germany alone counts 57 licensed providers, and its savings and cooperative banks are rolling out crypto trading to ordinary depositors.6

For millions of Europeans, the first crypto gateway will not be an exchange with a token and a referral programme. It will be their bank, wearing the regulator's stamp.

The US is moving in the same direction, if more noisily. The CLARITY Act passed the House, cleared the Senate Banking Committee in May, and a merged Senate draft is circulating ahead of the 10 August recess deadline.7 Passage this year is genuinely uncertain; prediction markets currently price it below a coin flip.8 But the direction of travel is not uncertain, and neither is the shape of the outcome: a codified perimeter that rewards institutions with balance sheets, compliance departments and banking charters.

Meanwhile, in the native crypto bubble

The same six months have been brutal for the companies that built this industry. The first half of 2026 set a record of 207 successful hacks, with $972M stolen; the largest single incident, at Drift Protocol, accounted for $295M, and roughly two thirds of stolen funds are attributed to North Korea-linked actors.9 More than 5,000 crypto jobs have been cut this year, more than in the 2022 crash: Coinbase trimmed around 14% of its workforce, Gemini roughly 30% since January.10 Polygon and 1inch are restructuring around revenue while their tokens sit near record lows.11 BitMEX is winding down. 12  Bitcoin itself trades roughly half below its October 2025 peak.13

And last week, the SEC's Hester Peirce, the commissioner the industry calls “Crypto Mom”, told builders of on-chain vaults and lending protocols that if they do "headstands, backflips, and other gymnastics" to read securities law as inapplicable to their products, they "will have a painful fall."13 Yet, her statement is not a crackdown but an invitation to come in and register. But it is to be read plainly: the friendliest regulator crypto has ever had is confirming that moving an activity on-chain does not move it outside the law. The era in which code was assumed to sit beyond the securities perimeter is over, and it was ended by its most sympathetic referee.

Regulation is not the murder weapon

It would be convenient, and wrong, to blame the rules for the wreckage. Hacks are a security failure, not a compliance cost. The layoffs and shutdowns trace mostly to a bear market and to business models that never found paying customers. What regulation actually did is subtler: it removed the ambiguity that let companies survive without revenue. Compliance is a fixed cost, and fixed costs sort. A licensed bank amortises a compliance department across millions of clients; a 40-person protocol with no income cannot. The grey zone was, in effect, a subsidy for the unviable. MiCA cancelled the subsidy.

That sorting is uncomfortable for the industry's self-image, because the survivors look less like cypherpunks and more like financial institutions. But it is what normalisation was always going to look like. Yes, as we read it constantly, “digital assets are no longer fringe”. And it means the cost of no longer being fringe is that the fringe no longer gets special treatment.

What the pioneers actually lost

Here is the part the eulogies miss. The natives are losing distribution, not relevance. When a German cooperative bank sells bitcoin to a depositor, it does so on custody technology, market infrastructure and blockchain rails that native firms spent a decade building. The stablecoins banks now issue run on public networks the incumbents once dismissed. Even the vaults Commissioner Peirce warned about are, in her own telling, candidates to "become mainstream tools for managing investment portfolios" once a compliant path exists.14

The niche pioneers are not being erased. They are being absorbed, as the pioneers of every maturing technology were before them: some as acquisitions, some as infrastructure providers, some as the regulated survivors who adapted early. The ones who treated regulation as an existential enemy are finding that it was actually a filter.

Normalisation has visibly come at the pioneers' expense; this summer settled that. What remains open is a harder question: does absorption into the financial mainstream count as the movement's defeat, or as the only victory that was ever on offer?
