Firm inflation and resilient spending reprice the Fed, and Bitcoin feels it first

The macro backdrop has become less supportive for digital assets this week. September CPI rose 0.6% month-on-month and 3.7% year-on-year, with the annual rate landing above the 3.6% consensus.¹ Energy did much of that work: gasoline prices rose 9.1% over the month and accounted for around half the headline increase. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month to 2.6% year-on-year, firm enough to reinforce the Fed's concern that inflation is not yet under control.¹

At the same time, the US economy continues to prove resilient. September retail sales rose 0.8% against expectations of roughly 0.3%, following an August figure since revised up to 1.3%.² Some of that strength reflects higher gasoline prices, with gasoline station sales up 6.4% on the month, but even allowing for this, the broader run of economic data suggests activity is holding up better than expected. That leaves the Fed with an uncomfortable combination: inflation remains elevated while demand has not weakened enough to remove the need for restrictive policy.

Bitcoin and the broader digital asset market have moved lower on the resulting hawkish repricing, a reminder of how sensitive Bitcoin remains to monetary policy over short horizons. Higher expected rates lift real yields and the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset, while tighter financial conditions shrink the liquidity available to risk assets generally. Flows have followed. Global digital asset investment products have seen $434M of outflows so far this week, a clear deterioration in sentiment since the CPI release.

Markets still do not expect the Fed to raise rates at the October meeting. Polymarket put the probability of no change at roughly 75% on 15 October, against around 25% for a 25bp increase.³ Futures have nevertheless moved considerably more hawkish since the CPI print, and expectations for another increase before year-end have risen substantially. What has shifted is the expected timing, not the direction.

There is an important nuance in the retail sales data. Strong nominal spending partly reflects consumers paying more for energy rather than an acceleration in real consumption. Excluding gasoline, September sales rose only 0.2%, down from 1.0% in August.² If higher energy costs keep squeezing household purchasing power, today's resilient consumption data could give way to weaker demand later in the year.

For Bitcoin, the near-term setup is therefore difficult rather than fundamentally bearish. The market needs either clearer evidence that inflation is cooling or enough weakness in activity to remove the threat of further tightening. Until one of those arrives, every stronger-than-expected macro release is likely to generate fresh rate volatility. The US economy is resilient enough to tolerate restrictive policy, while inflation is too high for the Fed to declare victory. For investors, that argues for reading the coming weeks as a data-driven range rather than a trend, and for sizing digital asset exposure against a strategic allocation rather than against this week's print.
