FAQWhat does Zcash do?
Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in 2016 that uses zero-knowledge cryptography (zk-SNARKs) to let users transact without revealing the sender, receiver, or amount. It shares Bitcoin's core monetary design - proof-of-work mining and a supply capped at 21 million coins - but adds optional confidentiality at the protocol level.
Learn more about ZcashIs Zcash actually private?
Privacy on Zcash is optional rather than automatic. Transactions can be either transparent, and therefore visible on the blockchain like Bitcoin's, or shielded, in which case the details are encrypted and validated using zero-knowledge proofs. Users only benefit from full confidentiality when they use shielded addresses and a wallet that supports them.
Who is behind Zcash?
Zcash was developed by the Electric Coin Company, co-founded by cryptographer Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn, and builds on the Zerocash research protocol produced by academics at Johns Hopkins, MIT and other institutions. The Electric Coin Company and the non-profit Zcash Foundation both contribute to development, while the network itself operates as a decentralised, open-source blockchain.
How many Zcash (ZEC) coins are there?
Zcash has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million ZEC, the same cap as Bitcoin. New coins are issued to miners as block rewards, and that issuance is cut in half at regular intervals (roughly every four years), meaning the pace of new supply slows over time until the cap is reached.
