Bitcoin bröt igenom 80 000 dollar när räntorna nådde högsta nivån på nitton år

Digitala tillgångar har visat överraskande motståndskraft den gångna veckan. Förra veckans hökaktiga besked från Federal Reserve och CLARITY Acts fall i senaten lämnade ett läge som såg besvärligt ut: inflationen är fortfarande för hög, penningpolitiken fortfarande stram och den lagstiftningsväg som skulle ge USA ett samlat regelverk för marknadsstrukturen har kört fast. Ändå steg priserna i stället för att vika sig. Bitcoin återhämtade sig från omkring 75 000 dollar och steg cirka 13 % på veckan, handlades över 87 000 dollar den 23 september och stannade nära 84 000 dollar.1 Därmed togs nivån 80 000 dollar med besked. Det var just den nivå vi förra veckan pekade ut som beroende av en utlösande faktor.

Enligt vår bedömning innebär det inte att kryptovalutor har frikopplats från makro. Uppgången speglar tydligare regulatoriska förutsättningar, fortsatt ackumulering bland stora innehavare, starka inflöden och en växande oro för hållbarheten i den amerikanska finans- och penningpolitiken.

SEC:s regelverk är nu det gällande

CLARITY Act nådde inte de sextio röster som krävdes för att gå vidare. Senaten avslog cloture-yrkandet, proceduromröstningen om att avsluta debatten, med 49 mot 50 röster den 15 september.2 Strikt tolkat är det ett bakslag. Praktiskt tolkat ändrar det mindre än rubriken antyder, eftersom myndigheten redan hade lagt fram ett eget regelverk. I mars publicerade SEC en taxonomi som omfattar digitala råvaror, digitala samlarobjekt, digitala verktyg, stablecoins och digitala värdepapper, och som behandlar hur värdepapperslagstiftningen tillämpas på staking, airdrops och wrapped-tillgångar som inte utgör värdepapper.2 Taxonomin var utformad för att komplettera den kommande lagstiftningen. När lagstiftningen nu har stannat av blir den i stället det gällande regelverket snarare än en tillfällig lösning, och både SEC och CFTC behåller befogenheten att bygga vidare på det. Det som har avgjorts är inte reglerna i sig utan vem som skriver dem, och svaret är tills vidare tillsynsmyndigheterna.

Flödena har varit det mer mätbara stödet. Våra data visar inflöden på omkring 3,5 miljarder dollar till investeringsprodukter för digitala tillgångar i branschen som helhet under de senaste fem handelsdagarna, en kraftig vändning från de utflöden som noterades i mitten av månaden. Ackumuleringen bland stora innehavare har fortsatt sedan augusti, om än i relativt blygsam omfattning. Oljan har också bidragit: Brent har fallit tillbaka under 100 dollar per fat efter fem handelsdagar i rad med nedgång, vilket lättar något på det omedelbara inflationstrycket.1

Mer intressant är dock hur kryptovalutorna har uppträtt mot bakgrund av förnyade hökaktiga signaler. Amerikansk PMI-statistik kom in starkare än väntat och förstärkte bilden av att den ekonomiska aktiviteten förblir robust, samtidigt som oljepriserna ligger kvar högt. Även Fed-företrädare slog an en fastare ton. Michael Barr lyfte fram stigande inflationsrisker och ett minskat hot från arbetsmarknaden, medan Austan Goolsbee varnade för att energichocken kan leda till en mer varaktig inflation. Marknaden reagerade kraftigt: den implicita sannolikheten för en räntehöjning i oktober steg till omkring 70 %.

Statsobligationsräntorna lämnade mindre utrymme för tolkning. Den amerikanska tioåringen nådde 5,12 % den 23 september, den högsta nivån sedan 2007.1 I ett konventionellt makroramverk är det en betydande motvind för Bitcoin. Högre räntor gör statsobligationer mer attraktiva och stramar åt de finansiella förhållandena, och en mer hökaktig Fed tynger normalt likviditetskänsliga tillgångar. Bitcoin försvagades visserligen under dagen från sina toppnivåer, men betydligt mindre än omprissättningens omfattning normalt hade antytt, och veckan slutade klart högre än den inledde.

Ramverket, inte nivån

Det försätter Fed och det amerikanska finansdepartementet i ett allt besvärligare läge. Om inflationen förblir hög kan Fed se sig tvingad att höja räntan ytterligare. Men högre räntor ökar samtidigt pressen på statsfinanserna och på statsobligationsmarknaden. Om räntorna fortsätter uppåt stiger också sannolikheten för mer aggressiva ingrepp, vare sig det sker genom större köp av statsobligationer eller genom något annat försök att pressa ned de långa räntorna.

Det förblir en svansrisk snarare än vårt huvudscenario, men den blir alltmer relevant. Det mest slående med den gångna veckan är kombinationen av starka inflöden och positivt prismomentum i ett betydligt mer hökaktigt ränteläge. Kryptovalutor har inte frikopplats från makro. Snarare tycks marknaden vara på väg från att enbart oroa sig för räntorna till att oroa sig för om det ekonomisk-politiska ramverk som ligger bakom räntorna i sig är hållbart.
