What is Bitcoin?

The word ‘Bitcoin’ can mean three different things:

  • The Bitcoin protocol or set of rules on which the network and asset operates

  • The Bitcoin network of connected computers running the Bitcoin protocol

  • The bitcoin asset itself, also known as BTC or XBT

Note that the Bitcoin protocol and Bitcoin network by convention are written with an uppercase B, whereas bitcoin the asset is written with a lowercase b.
