Die Fed sitzt in der Klemme

Die US-Daten der vergangenen Woche haben die Federal Reserve in eine unbequeme Lage gebracht: Die Inflation erweist sich als zu hartnäckig, um eine spürbare Lockerung der Geldpolitik zu rechtfertigen, während sich die Konsumaussichten zugleich sichtbar eintrüben. Der Core-PCE für Juli stieg im Monatsvergleich um 0,2 % und im Jahresvergleich um 3,3 % — beides im Einklang mit dem Konsens —, während der Headline-PCE mit 3,7 % noch fester ausfiel, ein Zehntel über den Erwartungen.¹ Als das von der Fed bevorzugte Maß erhält diese Veröffentlichung die größte Aufmerksamkeit, und sie deutet darauf hin, dass die zugrunde liegende Inflation hartnäckig bleibt, was den Spielraum für Zinssenkungen einschränkt.

Die übrigen Daten wiesen in die entgegengesetzte Richtung. Das Verbrauchervertrauen fiel im August auf 89,4 — den niedrigsten Stand seit sieben Monaten —, wobei die Erwartungskomponente um 5,8 Punkte auf 68,2 zurückging, während die Komponente zur gegenwärtigen Lage zulegte.² Die Verkäufe neuer Eigenheime fielen im Juli um 10,5 % auf 607.000, bei einem auf 9,6 Monate gestiegenen Lagerbestand — ein deutliches Zeichen dafür, dass die hohen Finanzierungskosten die Wohnungsnachfrage belasten.³ Dennoch verschlechtert sich die Gesamtwirtschaft nicht schnell genug, um die Fed zum Handeln zu zwingen. Es handelt sich nicht ganz um Stagflation, doch die Kombination bleibt schwer zu vereinbaren, und unserer Einschätzung nach ist keineswegs klar, dass die Fed einen derart taubenhaften Kurs einschlagen wird, wie es die Märkte zuletzt eingepreist haben. Für Staatsanleihen spricht dies für anhaltende Volatilität, wobei das kurze Ende besonders sensibel auf eingehende Inflations- und Arbeitsmarktdaten reagiert.

Die ausgeweiteten Rückkäufe des Finanzministeriums verstärken unser Unbehagen. Die anfängliche Marktreaktion beim Start der Käufe bestand in steigenden Renditen, was kaum ermutigend ist. Grundsätzlicher betrachtet verschiebt das Programm die Emissionstätigkeit hin zu kürzeren Laufzeiten, erhöht damit die Sensitivität des Staates gegenüber der Fed-Politik und birgt das Risiko, die finanziellen Bedingungen so weit zu lockern, dass die Zinsen länger höher bleiben. Es hat bereits zu einem schwächeren Dollar beigetragen, was die importierte Inflation erhöht und eine künftige Lockerung durch die Fed noch schwieriger macht. Das Ergebnis ist ein zirkuläres Problem: Die Käufe drücken das lange Ende, was den Dollar schwächt; das kürzere Laufzeitprofil erhöht die Verwundbarkeit gegenüber den Fed-Zinsen, und diese Zinsen wiederum werden von genau jener Inflation getrieben, die der schwächere Dollar verschärft. Aus unserer Sicht ähnelt dies eher einer vorübergehenden Marktkorrektur als einer echten Lösung, während das zugrunde liegende fiskalische Glaubwürdigkeitsproblem ungelöst bleibt.

Vor diesem Hintergrund hält Fed-Vorsitzender Kevin Warsh am Freitag, den 28. August, seine erste Grundsatzrede in Jackson Hole, und die Erwartungen sind ungewöhnlich ausgewogen. Der Markt sucht weniger nach einem expliziten Signal für September als nach Klarheit darüber, wie er die Kombination aus hartnäckiger Inflation, schwächeren Arbeitsmarkt- und Vertrauensdaten sowie den jüngsten Verwerfungen am langen Ende der Treasury-Kurve interpretiert. Wir achten auf drei Punkte: ob er die jüngste Inflation als anhaltend oder schockgetrieben charakterisiert, ob er die Straffung der finanziellen Bedingungen durch höhere langfristige Renditen ausdrücklich anerkennt, und, vor allem, ob er die Geldpolitik von der Rückkauf-Intervention des Finanzministeriums distanziert.

Die Zuflüsse werden unterstützend

Bitcoin schloss am 26. August nahe 78.500 US-Dollar, nachdem er am Vortag kurzzeitig die Marke von 81.000 US-Dollar überschritten hatte, und hat damit erstmals seit 270 Handelstagen seinen gleitenden 200-Tage-Durchschnitt zurückerobert.

Fondsflüsse über alle Emittenten hinweg deuten darauf hin, dass sich dieses Dilemma der Fed als unterstützend für digitale Vermögenswerte erweist: Über die ersten drei Handelstage der Woche bis zum 27. August verzeichneten alle Emittenten weltweit Zuflüsse von 1,65 Mrd. US-Dollar — nach den 2,94 Mrd. US-Dollar in der vollständigen Woche bis zum 20. August, dem weltweit größten Wochenzufluss des Jahres. Bitcoin führte mit 976 Mio. US-Dollar, gefolgt von Ethereum mit 478 Mio. US-Dollar, bei breiter Beteiligung von Altcoins (XRP +80,5 Mio. US-Dollar, Solana +62,9 Mio. US-Dollar, Hyperliquid +39,0 Mio. US-Dollar). Die USA trugen mit 1,5 Mrd. US-Dollar den Großteil bei, wobei auch Deutschland und die Schweiz stark abschnitten. Die gesamten verwalteten ETP-Vermögenswerte der Branche sind auf rund 155 Mrd. US-Dollar gestiegen, und die branchenweiten Zuflüsse seit Jahresbeginn liegen mit 3,4 Mrd. US-Dollar wieder im positiven Bereich. Hierbei handelt es sich um branchenweite Zahlen, die sämtliche Emittenten weltweit erfassen, und nicht um Produktzuflüsse von CoinShares.

Bürokratie und die Miner

Abseits der Makroperspektive konzentriert sich unser bevorstehender Mining-Bericht auf ein unserer Ansicht nach unterschätztes Thema: Bürokratische Hürden sind inzwischen die bindende Beschränkung für den Ausbau von Rechenzentren in den USA, und Bitcoin-Miner zählen zu den Hauptprofiteuren dieser Entwicklung. Die Leerstandsquote bei Rechenzentren ist von 10 % im Jahr 2019 auf derzeit rund 1 % gesunken, wo sie sich nun bereits das dritte Jahr in Folge hält⁴; Moratorien und Beschränkungen für Neuentwicklungen erreichen Rekordniveaus, und die Kapazität, die auf einen Netzanschluss wartet, beläuft sich auf rund 2.060 Gigawatt — gegenüber einer gesamten installierten US-Erzeugungskapazität von etwa 1.300 Gigawatt, also rund dem 1,6-Fachen der gesamten bestehenden Flotte des Landes⁵. Da die durchschnittliche Zeit für den Anschluss einer neuen Anlage inzwischen bei rund fünf Jahren liegt, tragen bereits energisierte Standorte einen erheblichen Aufschlag. Miner verfügen bereits über diese Rechenzentrumsinfrastruktur, ohne regulatorische Hürden für die Umwidmung von Kapazität in Richtung KI — weshalb der Anteil der KI-Erlöse im gesamten börsennotierten Mining-Sektor von rund 30 % auf einen von uns bis Jahresende geschätzten Wert von 70 % gestiegen ist, möglicherweise sogar noch höher.
