Nur wenige Stunden nach Donald Trumps Amtseinführung als Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten im Weißen Haus erwarb das DeFi(dezentralisierte Finanzen)-Projekt World Liberty Financial – eines seiner Krypto-Ventures – erhebliche Mengen an Krypto. Insbesondere wurde wBTC im Wert von 47 Millionen USD erworben, gefolgt von einem weiteren Kauf von 95 Token (mit einem Wert von etwa 20 Millionen USD) desselben Vermögenswerts am 24. Januar, wie das Datenunternehmen Arkham Intelligence mitteilte. Diese Käufe veranlassten viele Medien und Beobachter, einschließlich des Unternehmens selbst oder auch dieses Krypto-Mediengründers, zu der Behauptung, Donald Trumps Unternehmen habe Bitcoin erworben. Krypto ist komplex, aber vereinfachte Darstellungen können weniger erfahrene Anleger zu riskanten Entscheidungen verleiten. Deshalb ist es wichtig zu erklären, warum wBTC nicht Bitcoin ist.

 

Wofür steht wBTC?

wBTC ist der Ticker von „wrapped Bitcoin“: eine tokenisierte Version von Bitcoin, die für die Verwendung innerhalb des Ethereum-Ökosystems entwickelt wurde. Der 2019 eingeführte wBTC ermöglicht es Bitcoin, auf der Ethereum-Blockchain zu operieren. Bitcoin und Ethereum sind unterschiedliche Blockchains mit inkompatiblen Technologien – man kann Bitcoin zum Beispiel nicht an eine Ethereum-Adresse senden, da sich die Formate grundlegend voneinander unterscheiden. Dennoch ist Bitcoin als bekanntester digitaler Vermögenswert mit der größten Liquidität sehr begehrt, aber seine technischen Einschränkungen verhindern, dass er nativ im Ethereum-DeFi-Ökosystem verwendet werden kann. DeFi-Plattformen, die von Turing-vollständigen Smart Contracts angetrieben werden, ermöglichen dezentralisierte Kreditvergabe, -aufnahme und Derivatehandel. Um diese Lücke zu schließen, haben Ethereum-DeFi-Community-Mitglieder und der Verwahrer BitGo wBTC geschaffen, das als ERC-20-Token (Ethereums Standard für fungible Token) betrieben wird.

 

Wie funktioniert wBTC?

Um Bitcoin auf Ethereum zu übertragen, sperrt ein Verwahrer – in diesem Fall BitGo – die Bitcoin und gibt eine entsprechende Menge an wBTC-Token aus. Wenn ein Nutzer den ursprünglichen Bitcoin zurückerlangen möchte, wird der ERC-20-Token verbrannt und der Bitcoin freigegeben.

Als ERC-20-Token kann wBTC wie jeder andere Ethereum-Vermögenswert verwendet werden. Er kann als Sicherheit für Kredite dienen, verliehen werden, um auf Plattformen wie MakerDAO, Compound, AAVE oder Morpho Renditen zu erzielen, oder in native Ethereum-Token wie ETH, USDT oder USDC getauscht werden.

 

Eingeschränkte Nutzung von wBTC

Während wBTC neue Anwendungsfälle für Bitcoin ermöglicht und Ethereum liquider macht, wird es von DeFi-Nutzern weiterhin kaum genutzt.

Mit Stand vom 24. Januar 2025 halten laut Glassnode nur etwa 3.680 Adressen ein positives Guthaben von wBTC.

Seit dem Höchststand im Mai 2022 ist das Angebot von 283.000 Token auf etwa 123.000 gesunken. In der Zwischenzeit ist seine Marktkapitalisierung laut Dune Analytics nur um 34,6 % gestiegen – von 9,8 Milliarden USD auf 13,24 Milliarden USD.

Wo liegen die Einschränkungen von wBTC?

wBTC ist mit gewissen Risiken behaftet, die in erster Linie mit der Abhängigkeit von Drittverwahrern wie BitGo (jetzt mit dem Unternehmen Bit Global des Tron-Gründers Justin Sun verbunden) zusammenhängen. Obwohl BitGo seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 2013 einen guten Ruf genießt, stellt es immer noch eine potenzielle Schwachstelle dar. Probleme mit dem Verwahrer könnten die Ausgabe- oder Rücknahmemechanismen von wBTC destabilisieren.

Darüber geschieht die wBTC-Verwaltung zwar verteilt über eine DAO unter der Beteiligung angesehener Krypto-Organisationen wie BitGo, Kyber Network, Gnosis, MakerDAO und Ren, doch Probleme innerhalb der DAO könnten die Stabilität des Tokens gefährden.

Als ERC-20-Token ist wBTC auch vom Ethereum-Netzwerk abhängig. Änderungen am Konsensmechanismus von Ethereum oder Schwächen im Smart Contract von wBTC stellen Risiken dar. Auch wenn sie weit hergeholt scheinen, sind diese Unsicherheiten für viele langjährige Bitcoin-Inhaber, die an der Stabilität des „digitalen Goldes“ hängen, inakzeptabel. Zudem erfordern wBTC-Transaktionen Gasgebühren, die in ETH bezahlt werden müssen, was in Zeiten hoher Ethereum-Netzwerknutzung teuer werden kann.

 

Gibt es noch andere tokenisierte Bitcoin-Versionen?

wBTC ist die beliebteste tokenisierte Version von Bitcoin, aber weder die erste noch die einzige. So gab es bereits 2013/14 in der heute vergessenen BitShares-Blockchain eine tokenisierte Version von Bitcoin namens BitBTC, doch der Wertverlust des Netzwerks verdeutlicht die Risiken, die mit der Verwendung solcher Brückenwerte verbunden sind.

Zu den anderen Versionen tokenisierter Bitcoins gehört das kürzlich eingeführte cbBTC, das eigene tokenisierte Bitcoin-Produkt von Coinbase.

Gibt es einen investment case?

In einem reinen Anlagekontext ist der Erwerb von wrapped oder tokenisierten Bitcoin nicht besonders sinnvoll, da der Besitz des ursprünglichen Vermögenswerts mit weniger Risiken verbunden ist.

Der wBTC hat jedoch neue Möglichkeiten für Bitcoin im DeFi-Ökosystem eröffnet, auch wenn seine Akzeptanz noch begrenzt ist. Da immer mehr tokenisierte Bitcoin-Lösungen auftauchen, bleibt es ungewiss, ob wBTC seine Position als dominante Wahl behalten wird. Nichtsdestotrotz wird die Existenz von tokenisierten Bitcoins – in welcher Form auch immer – wahrscheinlich fortbestehen, insbesondere mit der zunehmenden Einführung von Krypto durch Institutionen oder der Nachfrage von anderen Blockchains, die ihre eigene Bitcoin-Version benötigen. Potenzielle Upgrades des nativen Layer-1 von Bitcoin könnten zukünftig jedoch den Bedarf an tokenisierten Vermögenswerten wie wBTC verringern.
